Hi all!

My name is Jordan Lawver. I manage the augmented/mixed/virtual reality business at Trimble, a large tech company focused on the construction industry. Among others, I manage the Trimble XR10 product, a ruggedized hardhat version of Microsoft's HoloLens mixed reality device.

My good friend D'Arcy Salmann (/u/darcyjs14 ) is the Senior Director of Commercial Engineering for Mixed Reality (including HoloLens) at Microsoft.

Together, we have over 14 years of experience working on augmented and mixed reality tech.

This morning we're hosting an AMA on /r/IAmA to chat about HoloLens and all things AR/MR/VR.

As you know, HoloLens is still a relatively new device in the market, mostly aimed at enterprise customers, and still quite unknown to the wider population. Self-delete program

Here’s an idea if it doesn’t already exist. A self deleting memory card or stick. Or say a program you can run on a stick and after days X the memory card hadn’t been used, it would delete everything on it. It would do this once plugged in and then comparing date and time on the computer to a log on the stick. In order to prevent the viewer from seeing what is on the stick during the time it takes to erase (partition) it would randomly display some pictures and hide the content. Basically a security measure. Obviously you could password protect as well. If erase would not be completed during the tine it would be plugged in, it would continue from where it left off until it was completed.

Skin Cancer Detection using Artificial Intelligence

Hello!! Our research for detecting skin neoplasms was published in PLOS Medicine (https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pmed.1003381). It is a large scale detection study, and we discussed various biases that may exist in the ML research.

We performed an external validation using all single lesion biopsied cases for the past 10 years. A total of 10,426 cases, consisting of about 40,000 clinical photographs were used for the retrospective cohort validation. Almost all kinds of skin tumors (43 neoplasms) were included in the analysis.

In the diagnosis of skin neoplasms, our algorithm showed comparable performance in the reader test, but the performance was inferior to that of dermatologists in a tertiary care center. The lack of data relevancy may bring the inferiority of the algorithm. Various biases that lead to the overestimation of algorithms in the medical field were discussed in the paper.

Since 2018, real-time web DEMOs have been available at http://modelderm.com (Classification Model; Model Dermatology) and http://rcnn.modelderm.com (Detection Model; Model Dermatology with RCNN), to demonstrate reproducibility. The development of our model was previously published in JAMA Dermatology in 2019 (https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamadermatology/article-abstract/2756346).

Recently, we made a derivative application (http://ai.skindx.net) for assisting laypeople to select the appropriate type of skin clinic.

Nuclear can't compete because it is too slow, too expensive , leaves toxic waste, is a target for terrorists and no one wants it near their homes.

This is my personal opinion:

Nuclear has a long history of coming up with new designs on paper and then taking millions in tax payer funding that never results in any feasible or financially practical designs. They recently got millions for paper only designs in the new US budget.

That is money that would be better spent on renewable energy and climate disaster mitigation and that misleads people to think some new nuclear is about to come along if we just keep pouring money in to that technology. It creates a false sense of security and undermines the need to be acting now and fast with the clean renewable energy we already have available.

Examples of this are the Nuscale reactor that is now 3 billion over budget and has been put off until 2030 if it ever gets built and the ITER Tokomak experiments that has cost well over $69 billion and only produced energy for 20 seconds.

We do not have time and money to waste on these theoretical nuclear designs and when your house is on fire with your kids and grandkids inside you don't waste time on theoretical ways to put out that fire.

You use what is already available and is fast and proven to work.

When will AI in video games talk to use like the plushy grey character in the movie “Her”?

I recall one scene in the movie “Her” where the main character was playing a augmented reality video where he had to guide a small grey character though a dungeon. The character responded to his reactions like a real person and it blew my mind! It seems like AI in video games hasn’t improved a significant amount. When do you think we can expect AI to pass the Turing test and become the standard in video games of the future especially RPG games?
