Big Tech has taken meaningful steps to slow the Russian military invasion and Russian leadership's mass communication tools, but there's still a big question of what role those companies played in bringing the world to this perilous moment. While never an official arm of the Russian state, social media and companies like Google/YouTube and Apple provided the vehicles to confuse, distract, and, when necessary, enrage Russian citizens (and populations abroad), eroding democracies and democratic processes while deterring meaningful international intervention against rising autocracies. Whatever happens in Russia and Ukraine, democracies won't be safe until the Big Tech business model is rewritten to one that doesn't profit by misinformation, outrage, and personal data.
