Where are all the "break-through" improvements in battery life/performance?

It feels like every couple of months we have another article claiming to have found a break through in battery performance. I recall these claims going as far back as 5 years and yet here we are, most smart phone last one day. Why? Anyone out there know why we are still waiting to see big improvements in this area?
