Touch the shape of sound with a new musical instrument - OTO
Every instrument, from the deer-skin drum, to the 88-key concert-piano, has faced the same design constraint: the need to make sound. Physical sound generation, whether by a vibrating string, or a resonating brass chamber, is beholden to the acoustic properties of material physics. With digital synthesis, though, this is no longer the case. Control and input interfaces can now look and feel how they sound. Sonic Geometry’s aim is to leverage this novel freedom to make exciting, intuitive musical devices that cause people to re-examine their conceptions of what instruments look and feel like.
We have launched our Kickstarter campaign in order to fund the first production batch of OTO controllers. Though we have prototyped extensively via 3d printing, Kickstarter’s backing will allow us to transition to manufacturing, making OTO available to everyone. We estimate delivery of the production units in April 2017.

What is all this computing power for?
I have been thinking a lot about how much computing power is being packed into phones these days. After seeing the Pixel specs recently, it occurred to me that this thing has more power than my laptop that I bought just a few years ago. I use this laptop every day for everything, and yet the newest phones blow it out of the water.
But what is all this extra power for? Modern phones, with all their power, still can't do the things that my less powerful laptop can do. Nearly every website has at least one vital feature that only works on desktop and not on mobile. There are desktop programs that either have no equivalent on mobile, or have watered down versions that pretend to be equivalent.
Every year, we see more and more impressive features come to phones, but many of them are cloud based features and do not actually taking advantage of the hardware. It seems as though the hardware specs and the software features have become less and less intertwined.
My question is who and/or what are these super powerful phones for? Clearly, they are not for replacing desktop computers, as anyone who has tried keeps their old laptop around for something. Clearly, they are not to support new features, as many of computing load is on the cloud servers and not the phone. What am I missing?

Thinking about buying Alienware products? My experience may change your mind (AutoBanned from technology)
I bought an Alienware M18 laptop last year as a present to myself. I've wanted one since I was a kid and I finally had a job where I could afford to make that dream come true. If I had known what I was in for I would have bought something else.
I am a professional tech, I've built computers and servers, worked advanced application support, admin, some network stuff and now work in security systems engineering. Suffice to say I have some experience with the industry and maintaining systems. I have worked with Enterprise level Dell a fair bit, I always find them to be pretty excellent. I knew going in that consumer level, even for a premium brand like Alienware would be different. I didn't realize it would be soul sucking.
I ponied up approximately $4,000 for my machine, maybe a little foolish way to spend money but I thought I was going to get quality and support at least. Within the first three months I had experienced unreliability due to overheating issues. Forced reboots from thermal buildup after watching an hour of TV on it or playing a game, god forbid I try to run a file server without the thing force crashing when the server was connected to. I found this high-powered high-end machine completely unreliable for anything beyond basic tasks my 7 year old lenovo refurb can handle.
There support kind of fixed the heat issues, well they logged in and couldn't see anything except some application logs for reboot. They fiddled with drivers and called it done. It also took hours to get them on the phone and deal with it. It drove my girlfriend insane the number of hours I had to spend trying to get them to fix the machine. Eventually after months of tolerating the issues I tried again. This time the person decided to replace the video card.
They sent out a contractor tech, nice enough guy but he has no loyalty to them or the job. Hell he was asking me about how to get a 'real computing job' while he was there because he was an engineer who was doing this part time to make ends meet. After he left there were new and exciting issues including screen artifacts and a continued heating problem.
This time they had me send it in to the depot. Over two weeks later I get the machine back with a note they replaced the System board this time. The entire time it was in the depot I received no updates. Despite the promises of their staff I had no idea what was happening or how long it would take, and this was a supposedly expedited/escalated issue.
At this point I wrote the CEO of Dell, Michael S. Dell a certified letter because I had no idea how to get answers or proper servics. I eventually had a call with some senior escalations person from Dell who started the call by quoting metrics on how Dell is the best in the world and insisting that they had fulfilled the terms of there warranty and that I had nothing to complain about. I had requested that they extend the warranty without charge due to the numerous issues I'd experienced in the first year (the warranty is about $300 per year to extend, which obviously is a necessity given the instability of the machine), I thought this was a reasonable request given the utter lack of quality and stability of a machine that was supposed to be top-of-the-line on the consumer side.
That was in October, I received my machine back early November and realizing Dell did not care one whit about my experience I resigned myself to having learned a shitty lesson and just having to buy the warranty extensions at the end of each year period so I could continue to use this $4,000 dissapointment.
Then today both my video cards failed to be detected. After about 2 hours of troubleshooting everything myself, praying it was just some BS driver corruption or something, I resigned myself to calling Dell for yet another major component replacement. Their agent attempted to have me connect to a remote session URL that I knew was not correct, I humored them and typed it into my browser and of courser it was caught as having an invalid certificate. I asked the rep twice that this was the URL he wanted me to go to, I then explained it was showing to be a hijack site and asked for a supervisor.
I have now owned this machine for not quite 11 months and I have had a video card replaced, the system board, now am going to have both cards replaced again (and likely the system board again), I have been unable to use the machine reliably beyond browsing, email and text editing for at least 1/3 of the length of ownership and have gone through every absurd, frustrating, and outright insulting experience with alienware premium support you can imagine. Oh and I didn't even write about the time it took them 120 hours to get back to me about a simple BIOs issue.
TL;DR If you are looking to buy a premium gaming laptop/ultrabook/whatever DO NOT BUY ALIENWARE. A lesson I shouldn't have had to learn, don't make my mistake.

I'm looking for a good deal on some decent headphones! I do a lot of graphic design work at the office and wouldn't mind some on-ear or over-ear headphones at a good price on Black Friday. Anyone know of a good deal happening?
They are just for listening to music, not gaming. Do not need microphone, if possible interested in going wireless.
Beats solo 3 are on sale for $109 at Target but I know there is better for around the same price.
Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated!

LTE Broadcast
As far as I know LTE Broadcast is somewhat like radio where many people can tune into one frequency without additional data cost for service provider unlike streaming. My question is if they charge data when you watch something on LTE Broadcast or is it free?

(Discussion) Future trends of the office workspace
Hello everybody,
A little side info; I'm an IT consultant in my daytime. At the moment I work for a client who's company is specialised in maintaining a 'house of the future', their core business is paid tours and renting out meeting rooms (prestige).
My managing boss there is preparing to give a presentation about the future trends of the office workspace. Although I'm more of a full stack developer, my job description with this particular client is more than just the coding, and I have also the task of helping them out with innovation. And I have been asked for help with this too.
I have done some research already on myself, but I was hoping to get some opinions and idea's from you as well. As well as trying to start a discussion about what could be and wat not in the near future.
My personal aim is more towards trend that are pretty close to us in the future, but I would love to hear more 'far away' ideas and theories as well. Anything from gadgets to trends to ways of working even.
The main trends that I have found, and are in many cases already partially in use in top companies, are these:
Flexible work
This is a trend that is already pretty popular in my home country and is still on the rise (although there has been public discussion about it as well). Internationalisation and globalisation all lead to a company that has an international workforce, across many timezones often. The need for very specific and specialist employees can also result in hiring people far away. These people don't always want to move homes for a job.
All of that leads to the desire for more flexible working hours and remote working. People want to be able to work from home and to optimalise their work-life balance.
Hot desking/ flex desking and modular desks
This is something that isn't entirely new, but for some reason isn't that big yet in my country (I live in Belgium Europe by the way). The idea of flex desks is simple and not new any more. Rather than that everybody has their own desk, there is an office pool of desks. These 'flex desks' can then be 'claimed' by employees as they come to work. This is usefull because if you offer flexible work hours and remote work options to your workforce, you won't need a desk for everybody. You'll be able to divide your workforce over a smaller amount of office space/ equipment this way.
A new trend with this is the idea of modular desks. This is something that I have seen is used in the more 'trendy' companies of today. They expand on the idea with making every desk a modular piece of furniture that is moveable AND can interlock with other modular desks. The power in this is that you can easily form the landscape of your office space. Employees can come in, take a flex desk spot and start their work. Then when they have to meet and discuss, they simply slide their desks in a bigger formation. Once they are done, they break up again.
One device / BYOD (Bring Your Own Device
BYOD has been in use for a few years already, but many say this will become even more popular. I think so too. Even though there are many security issues you'll need to work around, there are plenty of benefits.
But the main reason I think this will pick up is because of another trend I strongly believe in. That in the future, most employees will only have one device. A smartphone. ALready our smartphones are stronger, better and smarter than the computers of a decade or so ago. They are perfect computer units and capable of doing all our office work we now do on normal computers and laptops. I haven't found any good/ reliable options for IOS or Windows yet, but for Android there is Andromium already.
It is still in BETA but it turns your smartphone in a desktop environment. It is still your phone, but it emulates a familiar environment, which is often what scares away new people, to have to learn to work with a new environment. I've already tested Andromium with google docs, and it works really nice.
I can see this only going forward in the future and picking up momentum.
Now I would love to hear your opinions and idea's!

Does Facebook and Google's filtering of 'fake news' have implications for ideological bias in the internet super highway?
We see here that Facebook and Google will be cutting the ad revenue of 'fake news' sources. While this is most immediately a form of spam filtering, does it have implications for further ideological bias in the internet super highway?

Small win for auto renewal airplane wifi charges
Leo: Welcome to customer service. My name is Leo .
Leo: Hello David
David: Hey there, I had no idea that I was getting billed monthly, and thought I just had internet for the one flight I was on
Leo: I can help you with that. So I can verify the account may I have the last four digits of the credit card the subscription is billed to?
David: I just saw it on my billing statement I've got here for 10/12, then logged in and saw there was another one the other day
David: Sure, it's xxxx
Leo: Thank you. It looks like you purchased the Unlimited Plan.Your subscription is set to automatically renew each month. I'll submit a cancellation at the end of the current billing cycle at so your plan does not renew. Would you like me to email you confirmation?
David: I cancelled it already
David: But the issue is that last month I went to try to find the invoice in my email, but I wasn't emailed anything
Leo: I see the cancellation went through
David: nor for these last two and I didn't fly any where or login so can I have a refund on the last two charges?
Leo: Although Gogo's products are non-refundable, I can get you some credit towards future Gogo sessions. Is there an email address you would like me to send that to?
David: I would believe it would be in your terms & service that an email notification on billing would be necessary, is there a reason I never received email notification?
Leo: The subscription has automatic renewal, that is why you were not notified
David: And I believe the FTC automatic renewal laws state that a notification needs to be made prior to charge
Leo: We appreciate your feedback, David
Leo: Please hold
David: sure
Leo: A refund of $90.90 has been processed, reference number: XXXXX
David: Thank you, I appreciate it
Leo: You are more than welcome, David

Why paying for your email is the best way to go.
Recently I've seen a bunch of posts about peoples Gmail accounts just vanishing. I always kinda dismissed these thinking they're pretty rare and the system is looking for key words. Whatever these people were talking about or storing in Google docs. was probably not too great to be having. However recently several writers have had all their work vanish due to this algorithm picking up on fictional characters enacting some fictional deeds and deleted all of their work. Personally I use my email for near everything, and if you do as well I highly urge you to switch to a sort of paid email. Google has no reason to reinstate your account should they delete it. And there's nobody to call to get your account back. Free services are great but until they're given a form of sucrity and a way to get your account back should it be falsely deleted a paid service is infinitely more reliable.

Lenevo Phab Pro 2 with Google Project Tango set to unveil
Google keeps experimenting new things. From Artificial Intelligence to self-riding car, Google is running several experiments all over the world. One of them is Project Tango. Project Tango is a technology platform that uses computer vision to allow smartphones to detect their position around the world using GPS or other external signals. Lenevo Phab 2 Peo will be the first smartphone to feature depth-sensing camera which will utilize Tango feature. First of all sorry for spelling errors I'm on my phone, anyway.. my windows 7 laptop says there are connections available when I click the Wi-Fi thing and then where it says the network names it says that I am connected to it. Help setting up my free internet
So weird story but a few years ago my sister and her best friend signed a contract with a big Internet company (the big one notorious for being terribly expensive and bad customer service) but they forgot to pay the bill for a few months and called the company which informed them that their internet service was turned off. Funny thing was that it wasn't and when they told the employee that, they told them to not tell anyone and to keep using it. Since then we have moved two houses and brought the box along and the free internet kept working. We recently have moved into a new house and after plugging in the internet the house isnt producing any signal. We have contacted or landlords about getting it fixed and they suggest going to our Internet provider and then give them the bill. So we are kind of in a pickle, we can't go through the Internet company because we don't have a contract and dont want to risk losing the free box. Any suggestions???

How to Eliminate Facebook Ads on iPhone
Are you tired of Facebook marketing to you based on your Internet searches and other personal information? I have a three-step method to eliminating most -- if not all -- of the ads that show up in your iPhone Facebook feed.
-
Download AdBlock ($1.99). This amazing app eliminates most of the ads -- and their accompanying trackers and spyware -- that you will encounter on the internet. It works for all apps, including the Facebook browser and the new iOS news aggregator.
-
Browse the Internet in Safari's private mode. This will further eliminate the trackers and spyware that accumulate in your search history.
-
When you encounter a Facebook ad, "hide" it, and tell Facebook you don't want to see ads similar to it. Doing about 10-15 times dramatically cuts down on the advertisements you will see.
That's it. After following these three steps, I have gone whole days without seeing a sponsored ad.
