Hello /r/Tech,
I am a licensed rehabilitative therapist (medical massage therapist and physical therapy assistant) in Seattle. Over the past couple of years I have developed and patented a Non-Verbal, Real-Time, Patient Comfort Communication Medical Device. It is a 2 part system that is designed to streamline communication between a patient and their practitioner, and is essentially the 0-10, red-green pain scale in the form of a tactile feedback alerting wearable.
We have an issued USPTO Patent, initial frankenstein prototype for proof of concept, business model, potential funding with completion of a solid business plan, and a Founder/Inventor with nearly 15 years of experience in the rehabilitative manual therapy health care field.
We are looking for a Business Development Co-Founder/CEO/MBA in Seattle, with preferable experience in bringing consumer electronics to market, business plan creation, and turning a product into a company. Medical device, wearables, and hardware manufacturing experience would be beneficial. After meeting with a top HW accelerator in SF, as well as some VCs, the consistent feedback is clear that I am in need of a business team to help develop pragmatic business plan/valuation/operations execution that can bolster the success of the product. We are confident that this product will be a drastic disruptor to the applicable healthcare fields, and there are no other competitors in this niche market I have created.
This device has applications in Massage Therapy, Dentistry, Physical Therapy, the Speech/Hearing and Developmentally Disabled patient population, Chiropractic, Language Barriers, or any other instance where a patient may experience pain at the hands of their practitioner during treatment. In the massage therapy field, "more pressure, less pressure, right there, I don't like that, that feels great," are all things that a person thinks while getting manual treatment. Dental patients can alert of pain to differing degrees, reply yes or no, ask for rinse/suction, or for a break, while gloved hands and tools are in their mouth. We are giving the patient a voice designed to let them know that their comfort is paramount.
This device places an augmented level of communication into the treatment room, and acts as a sensory extension (color changing visual cues and tactile haptic vibrations) of their nervous system, that they can share with their practitioner, who will immediately adapt to the request. We also aim to capture the meaningful Subjective data directly from the patient to include in their progress reports and insurance billing charts.
Our distribution model is to provide Continuing Education training that will count towards a healthcare professional's governmentally mandated requirements to keep their license active, as well as selling the device.
We have a prototype that has functioned well enough for us to consider proof of concept complete, however, it is cumbersome and not aesthetically pleasing. It is a basic 3d printed Patient input device, with apps running on smartwatches that act as the Practitioner alerting device. Our current objectives are to acquire funding (in the works) by developing a business plan, complete our next round of form/function prototypes that match our renderings, and then focus group and trial the device in the applicable healthcare fields, while continuing to developing our curriculum for accreditation with the governing bodies (American Massage Therapy Association, American Physical Therapy Association, American Dental Association, etc.)
Remember in the movie Avatar when the Na'vi people would plug their long braid into the creature's braid to control them via a nervous system link? This is my attempt to put my patients and I on that same level.
It could also be considered to be similar to Reddit; an upvote/downvote system to direct your practitioner during treatment.
There was also a video that reached /r/all this week of a guy who added different horn sounds to his car. Different audible tones that portray different emotions while communicating with other drivers. This method felt similar as he had "increased the vocabulary of of the standard car horn." We want to increase the ability to communicate during a treatment session.
Please say hello and share your feedback!
