What do you think about Privacy ?

I know Privacy is a sentient topic to Americans which I fully respect, but I thought I'd like to get a little insight into that topic. Im talking about its relation with tech. I am an Apple user and I've seen Companies like Apple try to push that privacy should be a fundamental right stance. But I would like to know why is privacy so important to Americans ? are there people who have their hands on our data ? Why do you fear them owning our data, isn't it just for targeted adds. what would they do with our data ? how could it harm me , I live in a hut in a village in India and naturally privacy is barely a topic over here . Im very curious on how its looked upon in the west
