NAS? External Hard drive? Server? What am I actually looking for?

I want to have my computer remotely backup it's data every night to an external device over my home network.

I also do a lot of video editing and would like to store video files on this remote device.

I'd like to be able to access the video files regardless of if I am at home or not.

Is a NAS what I am looking for? A server?

My network switch has USB 3.0 and says it allows for external hard drives to be connected. Is that all I'd need to do?
