My intern has a higher salary than me (full-time employee for 4 years)

This year an intern started working for the tech company at which I work, and this person is my designated as my mentee. Do note that this intern has higher-education credentials to the degree that I do not. It was recently disclosed to me that the intern's salary exceeds my annual base by 15% and, further still, my total (including maximum annual bonus) by 3%. No matter how well I perform throughout the year, the intern will earn more than me.

I'm pleased with my salary, but I can't help but feel under appreciated given that the person whom I'm training and mentoring is essentially valued more than me by my manager. Is this common in tech? Does the mere presence of an academic credential—even if the program thereof is unrelated to the work—make this much of an impact on salary negotiation?
