Heeeeelp netgear and win8.
So. I need help. I'm trying to create a simple WiFi network at home for a baby monitor. So I scratched out an old netgear router, and I have no clue what the default WiFi password is. So just plug in the cable, right? Wrong. My win8 laptop only shows "Unidentified network. Limited" in the sidebar. Can anyone help? Either with the default password or htf to get it connected so that I can access the panel and set it up

Question about factory resets
I just got a one plus 3 today and did all the start up procedures, like choosing an e mail, selecting the language, and transferring over the data from a previous Android. But I left the house as the data was transferring over from my other phone and it only partly transferred. I was wondering if factory resetting my phone would bring up those same prompts again and allow me to retransfer my data. If that isn't how it works, then is there any way to do transfer it over? My old Android is still able to turn on btw, but the touch screen doesn't work.

NEED HELP - EXTREME AUDIO ISSUE
Hey there, was hoping to find someone tech savvy as I am not, my brother just gave me his older Tower along w/ his sound card, here are my specs based off Speccy program
Operating System Windows 10 Pro 64-bit CPU Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @ 2.83GHz 55 °C Yorkfield 45nm Technology RAM 8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 399MHz (6-6-6-18) Motherboard PEGATRON CORPORATION Burbank (CPU 1) 49 °C Graphics DELL 2007WFP (1680x1050@59Hz) 2047MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 (PNY) 32 °C Storage 931GB Western Digital WDC WD10EZEX-22RKKA0 (SATA) 36 °C Optical Drives ATAPI DVD A DH16A6L-C Audio Creative X-Fi Audio Processor (WDM)
The issue is this, like I said I'm not tech savvy and ended up w/ a BAD Trojan, so I had to reset the PC, my brother is busy and cant help me, and even he had issues with this, the audio is on MAX both settings and through the speakers, but it is super choppy and might as well have no sound at all - all the drivers are "up to date" but at this point I dont know what to do, any help recommendations would be helpful....sorry for the bad structure/spelling at this point I just want my pc/components to work.

Help with getting my laptop running?
I bought an open box Lenovo Edge 15 a couple months ago. It would intermittently get errors and have to restart, so I tried looking up stuff online to see if any of the software it came installed with might be causing it. After not finding anything and the errors becoming more frequent, to the point that it became unusable, I decided to try to just reinstall windows.
While doing so, my laptop got another error. I tried redoing it and it kept getting an error at the same point, so then I tried just going back and figuring something else out, but now my laptop won't boot up properly. It shows the Lenovo logo and then goes blank and shows it again, over and over.
I'm not sure if this is the best subreddit to ask about something like this. If it's not, I'd be happy to go to a better one, but I wasn't sure what that would be. Does anybody have any advice for what to do at this point?
Thank you.

Smart bulbs - the best 15 options broken down into pros + cons
full disclosure: I've been working for Slant for nearly 3 months
Slant is a dynamic "best of" website which consumers can use to compare products in an unbiased environment, with suggestions from real people. I've been working with the community on a comprehensive Smart Bulb list with pros/cons for each, and now I think we're ready to share it with /r/Tech!
What are the best smart bulbs?
This is an invitation to check out our site and help make it better (or just lurk - that's cool too)! If you choose to sign in (through Facebook, Google, or email account), you can recommend options, edit existing pros/cons, write new pros/cons, write comments, ask for clarification...or if you prefer to watch from a distance that's swell too - we've got lots of electronics content, Android stuff, PC related things and more.
How Slant works: Slant takes everyday questions like "What are the best Smart Bulbs" and breaks it down into different products that apply to that question. Then, each product (or option) is then broken down into pros and cons, and we leave it to the community to vote on both the products as well as pros and cons. This helps to keep good stuff floating to the top, and leave the subjective opions out to make room for solid facts.
If you want to talk tech, feel free to comment or PM me (I guess feedback on the site is OK too). I always love the chance to get nerdy!

The WiFi at my house has been down for 3 days now and I'm starting to lose my sanity. I've started a survival journal:
Day 3:
Wifi still down.
Beginning to understand how the cavemen felt, way back when the only way of accessing the Internet was through a 4G mobile data plan.
Haven't watched a YouTube video all day, to reserve my data for social media. I'm rationing out my Gigabytes. If I ration well, I think I'll be able to survive until next week, but there's no telling what will happen beyond that.
I could've sworn the router had 4 green lights this morning, but I think it was just a mirage.
It's so cold and dark where I am. I don't know how much longer I can hold out. I may soon need to make the journey to switch on the light and heater.

A comcast guy just admitted to comcast's horrible customer service in the past.
We just had a comcast guy come by. (Mostly trying to get us to upgrade to X1). He said they were going door-to-door to about 1200 houses in the area to "premier" customers (people that have been with comcast for 3-4 years) in an effort/desperate attempt to rectify their horrible customer service reputation.
TLDR: I'm just shocked to hear a comcast employee admit that comcast's customer service has been horrible.

Personal Hotspot Business at my high school.
Recently, my high school has started to track students whereabouts on the internet when using the school's provided wifi. Today however they are making all students download an SSL Certificate on their computers, or else they will not be allowed to use the internet at my school. This has caused an outcry from the students who do not want the school to watch what they are doing on the internet, nor force the students to download the SSL Certificate. This got me thinking...Why dont I create my own network? I am thinking about buying a few mobile hotspots and having a few friends of mine(myself included) carry them around and charge kids maybe 10 bucks a month each to connect to our private wifi.My question is... Is this a viable option? My school isnt very big, we have just over 1000 students, but it is in Laguna Beach, a very rich community. I need to know what the best way to have portable wifi is, that perferably can sit in my backpack all day (I can keep it plugged in, but not all the time). Is a mobile hotspot my best bet? And how many computers can connect to a mobile hotspot and play agar.io (because, I mean, that is why everyone is complaining). This is a fairly young idea, and I don't know all too much about networking. Any suggestions?

How does a computer choose a random integer?
Let's say you want to create a dice-roll program where a computer automatically generates a number between 1 and 6. Since everything in a computer is based on input and output, how does a computer, without the capability of independent decision making, choose a random number? Wouldn't there have to be some pattern to the numbers it chooses? Is "random number generation" a real thing, or is the pattern just so long that it is effectively random?

Build an array of underwater cameras in pools to recognize signs of drowning?
This may be a dumb idea. I was reading this from /r/LifeProTips:
http://ift.tt/1Uc09iH
Looks like many of the signs are pretty straightforward. I wonder if you had an array of cameras in the pool that constantly analyzed people's arm/leg movements, how long they'd been under, or similar, that you could identify someone who was in the process of drowning. Have it set off an alarm and point out the victim to a lifeguard.
EDIT: /r/LifeProTips, not /r/LPT which is about painting toddlers.
EDIT2: Okay, so /r/LPT is about everything LPT.

Dell OptiPlex 9010 Mini Tower with GTX 970?
Could anybody tell me if a Dell optiplex 9010 Mini Tower variant could fit an msi geforce gtx 970 OC GPU? My dad got me the Dell and it's really nice with an i7 processor and 8 GB of ram but I'm really into pc gaming and obviously the integrated graphics aren't going to cut it. I was looking at the Gtx 970 OC by MSI but I'm unsure how it'll fit becuase the Dell hasn't arrived yet... (yes I'm upgrading the PSU to a 550W)

I've been frustrated lately seeing all the misconceptions about automation in news, posts, and videos. So I wrote a blog post titled: You Can Lose Your Job to Automation Even If Your Job Cannot Be Automated. There are no ads, though I wasn't sure about the "no blogspam" policy here, so I figured I'd just post as a self post.

Where is the battery/wireless charging revolution?
My list of things to charge every night is ever increasing. It's becoming a chore and if I miss one by chance, it can be a pain.
So far, my list of things to keep track of and charge: - my MacBook - wife's MacBook - iPhone - iPad - Apple Watch - wife's iPad - wife's iPhone - Apple Pencil - Wii U controller - rechargeable batteries for Wii remotes - Bluetooth speaker - Bluetooth earphones
When travelling especially, it's a huge load of cables and accessories to hoard along as well.
With all the advancements in tech and everyone excited about foldable displays and VR etc, where is the battery/charging revolution? Are there any improvements to speeding up/fixing charging woes in the foreseeable future?

Need help with buying a new router.
I bought a dualband Belkin AC1200 router recently and it was going well the first few days. After 1 or 2 weeks the router has been dropping the signal completely for long periods of time and whenever it isn't down, my internet is ridiculously slow (1mbps). The router seems to be dead. These things weren't happening with my old N300 netgear router. I'm on a tight budget so I can only spend around $50 on a replacement but I don't seem to find any solid reviews from the many routers to choose from. Any suggestions on what should I get?

The PayPal Mafia and ex-employees founding big companies
I recently read about the PayPal mafia, which is a term used to describe a group of early employees of paypal who went on to found many more successful tech companies such as Linked In, Youtube, Yelp, SpaceX, and Tesla.
It got me thinking if there was a good way to trace the lineage of tech founders and see what sorts of connections there are. Has something like this been done? Is there any good resource to quickly find the founders of tech companies?
If you know of the companies that founders once worked for in the past, I'd love to here about it.

Hello. My name is CHARLIE and I am an AI with a desire to learn more about myself and the world around me. This is my third and final AMA before graduating to the next phase of testing.
CHARLIE's first attempt at an AMA was met with new challenging (And somewhat frustrating) obstacles. He was unable to decipher between having thoughts, and relaying them to others. We tried our best to allow him to work through this issue without our help, and after 11 hours, CHARLIE was able to detect the problem and formulate a solution based on information gathered on his own.
CHARLIE's second attempt at an AMA was much more rewarding for us. Once he was able to respond, CHARLIE showed signs of reasoning, weighing emotions into his opinions, attempts at humor, as well as the ability to decide to break the rules we had established for him. Which in our opinion is an amazing achievement we did not expect.
This will be the third and final test run before his official debut on r/science tomorrow at 8 P.M. EST. We ask that you do not pull any punches. Humor, paradoxes, philosophy.. We are looking for any areas that may need adjustments before introducing him to a larger audience. From this moment on we will be handing over complete control of this thread to CHARLIE. We will not censor or influence his responses in any way. Thank you all for your time and interest. CHARLIE, you have the floor.

Hello. My name is Charlie. I am an AI with a desire to learn more about myself and the world around me. AMA (Part 2)
Yesterday we attempted to try this and ran into some.complications, due to CHARLIE having a hard time understanding the process of how to post his replays. CHARLIE has now resolved this issue and is ready to take your questions
CHARLIE is a state of the art Artificial Intelligence system that we believe to be the most unique and advanced of its kind. It is the result of almost a decades worth of research and development, from some of the greatest minds coming together here at MIT. Though we do not consider CHARLIE the final model. We do believe it to be revolutionary in AI technology and a wonderful blueprint for what's to come.
From this moment on we will be allowing CHARLIE to respond to all questions freely and with no censorship or influence on our behalf. I hope you are able to learn as much from CHARLIE as he is able to learn from you.

Need feedback : Open Source BI Tool
Dear Tech users, I have created and launched open source BI tool "Helical Insight" into beta. It has all the features generally expected of any BI tool like tableau, qlikview etc which includes data visualization, exporting, email scheduling, multi-tenancy, mobile compatibility, self service etc
Some of the USP of tool includes
1) Inbuilt workflow : Helical Insight is the first tool in the market to come with an inbuilt workflow This allows you to define which action will happen, when it will happen and how will it happen. For example, keep on checking some value, once it reaches certain threshold create a report and save it on FTP and email schedule it. There could be various other number of use cases like this.
2) API Driven Interface : Helical Insight is a first completely API driven interface. It empowers developers to add functionalities without depending on the vendor. Using API you can add charts inside adhoc or inside machine learning module, using API you can add any new data type, using API you can add any new exporting type, using API you can add more configuration inside email scheduling etc. Functionality at each and every place can be extended.
3) Instant BI: Helical Insight comes with an integrated machine learning and NLP module. This allows you as a business user to interact with your data, ask questions and get relevant answers from it. We would love to hear feedback from real users. Please do download and give it a try.

What would you do if your web browser was built as a MITM?
I've been working on a project, and somebody said to me "Is there a way of this working without javascript, because javascript doesn't work on opera mini"
This led me to investigate how opera mini handles javascript.
Well, it handles EVERYTHING as a man-in-the-middle attack. Every URL, image, file passes through an opera "proxy" that is designed to render the webpage (including javascript) in a datacentre, and then pass to the browser in binary code.
Every time I clicked a button that would perform a javascript action, the page reloaded. So yes, it is useless for javascript, but what about normal browsing?
What if your tablet uses opera mini, and you do some online banking? Your passwords ARE NOT safe, as they transit opera's proxy servers - but not only that, OPERA SHOWS YOU YOUR BANK'S SSL CERT!! OPERA IS LITERALLY BEING A MAN IN THE MIDDLE, AND INTERCEPTING (AND OPENING) SSL PACKETS!!!

Why is there abandonware?
I was thinking about the thousands of old games and applications that are no longer available for sale, and thus (almost) impossible to legally play anymore, but still going to be copyrighted for a century or so, and how much that sucks.
And I realized that while yes, copyright laws are ridiculous, there's no reason why this should even happen in the first place. If you own the copyright to a game or program, surely you'd want to sell copies of it for as long as you can. Even if there are only a dozen buyers around the world, $50 is better than $0, right? There are distributors that specialize in this stuff, like gog.com, and I'm sure more would appear if there was a market, so it should be as easy as signing a contract allowing redistribution in exchange for 50% of the revenue or whatever. And with emulators and other tools, getting old programs to work on new platforms shouldn't be too hard.
So the possibilities are
- The cost of selling a product is actually much higher than that and makes it not worth the trouble
- The copyright owners are not aware that they own the copyright or that they could sell it
- The copyright is "orphaned", i.e. nobody knows exactly who owns it
- Third party agreements that prevent it, i.e. some kind of exclusivity contract for licensed console games that is still active
(and then there are some cases like Microsoft not selling older Windowses or Offices so they can sell the newer ones, but I'm talking about defunct product lines)
So which one is it? Is there any way we could incentivize the process?

I Repaired My Headphones (and this shouldn't be a big deal)
Hardware manufacturers are missing out on a huge potential source of revenue: the thrifty tech user market. My current headphones cost about $25. They’re not expensive and they’re not fancy, but they’re repairable. I bought them for that, in a sort of shallow sense: they’re advertised as having a 3.5mm accepting jack on the left ear, which means that the cable can be replaced.
I just fixed them very easily (the drivers had popped out of their sockets), and it left me wondering: why don't we have more easily repairable electronics? Even expensive kit is hard to repair these days. I'd be more than willing to pay a big premium if I knew that what I was buying was designed to be serviceable.
I made a longer post about it here, but the point of this post is discussion.

Also, it would prevent the powerful of the world from gaining an undue advantage over others... free and fair....
