Do phone VR eyemask things let you just watch video as normal 2D?

So basically I hate VR but I want a mini cinema experience with my phone. Can I get that with these phone VR headsets? Every time I see a review of one it only shows their VR use and the screen splits in two. Is that how it looks to the eye? I just want something that blocks out the outside which I can put my phone into and watch a movie without getting distracted
