Best Laptop on a Budget?
Hi im an art student from Ireland. As i start my new year in college im more than likely going to have to have a laptop to get my work done. What laptop would people recommend would be good for an artist in a budget of around £500.
I just want it to be fast enough to run most programs, can store a fair amount of work and with a decent battery life. I don't really care about if it can run games but if you know any that can run low-res games good as well would be a bonus. Hope i dont end up in r/choosingbeggers

Recommendation in Tech Law Research Field
Dear Reddit friends:
I'm working in one of the best universities in Latin America in the Law Research Institute. Due some retirements our Tech Law area is vacant and the will of our dean is to reinforce the area with the best and newest perspectives of the field. I'm not an expert in this matter, but I want to give some advice to the people in charge. In my research I've found that Copyright Law is the main field, but we want to include new topics regarding AI, Big Data, automatization, etc.
Which are some Universities and Programs of Tech Law research that you would recommend me to look at?
Which are the top professors in the field?
Is there some paper about the near future requirements in the field?
I hope to have some info from USA and Europe.
Thanks

I want to help my sweet grandmother out and maybe help her improve her internet habits that maybe she doesn't think of doing. It seems like she is always having trouble with getting viruses on her computer. I on the other hand have never had a virus on my computer. I'm not sure if she is opening a lot of garbage emails or what. I'm just wondering if any IT professionals have noticed common things elderly/non-tech savvy people are doing that are super risky that maybe they just don't realize. Thanks!

What are some SUPER secure/private cell phones? Any that have added precautions to prevent spying?
I'm a huge proponent for privacy rights, and so I'm really looking for a cell phone that has top-notch privacy and security. Obviously, part of that is also your service provider (currently with T-mobile, not opposed to changing), but I really need a new phone.
Does anyone happen to know of good privacy/security-oriented cellphones? I'm not worried about anything super fancy, in terms of "being able to play games" or "telling Alexa to order groceries with my thoughts". Just privacy, security, and maybe durability.

Do AirPods do this as well?? Thank you in advance!

Would deleting & re-joining facebook every few months be sufficient to stop user data aggregation/commodification?
Basically asking what I said in the title, a lot of people don't want FB to collect their data and sell it to advertisers but this is all based on their competence at building a user dataset for you that remains a stable indicator of your interests and ideology over time. That is curtailed by deleting your facebook and re-joining on a regular basis. Right? Perhaps not if they still have the dataset saved after you delete, and then just shift it back to your new profile using facial recognition. Not sure if that's technologically feasible for them at this point, though it's easy enough theoretically. (Surely they could just as easily do it through IP address detection but that's super easy to spoof.) Furthermore it would depend on how long they store your data after you delete your account. Is it only for 10-90 days, which is how long they claim to store non-users' browsing data?

What are some innovative mobile apps/softwares you've seen recently?
I remember using my first app on iPhone back in 2009 or so. It was a photo editing app that offered a few simple editing features like brightness and adding doodles, but it absolutely rocked my world at the time. Fast forward to 2019, apps not only make our lives easier, they are helping us find new ways to live entirely- paving new roads of possibility and even mending those roads that once seemed broken..
What are your current favorites? Mine are..
- Be My Eyes (mobile app, video call assistance for the visually impaired)
- Privacy.com (mobile app, virtual credit cards for secure online payments)
- Fair (mobile app, vehicle ownership)
- Mileage IQ (mobile app, tracks mileage for business write offs)
- Ecosia web browser (plants trees with 80% of it's revenue)

Build a pc , build a phone
I just had the idea of .how cool it would be if we can build a smart phone the same way we build a computer. . I know that the components of phones aren't as connectivity friendly .and for that to happen a whole new market of phone hardware should exist. the size is also an problematic. But in theory how hard is it ? What are other obstacles.
I dont know if this is the place for this post but its tech.

I would like to bring together a team to make something.
Im not really good with wiring or programming though ive had minor experience. But i have halfway decent ideas and can design a decent model. I want to create a new kind of "phone". It will be somewhat based off of the pip-boy from the fallout franchise but only in that it will be wearable. The model i have in mind will be sleek, modifiable (maybe) and be everything a modern phone is and more. So id like it if some people could offer their assistance in the creation, or at least conception, of this product. You would get a fair share of profits if this project ever takes off. I also posted this to r/technology and as and edit id like to say that it wouldnt be like a smartwatch or like a bendable phone. It would have a flashlight, 2 cameras, and decent sized speakers. For more details pm me and if it gets enough support i will have a final team put together.

Hmmmm
If i ran a world of 7 billion people, I would keep them technologically behind me. Far behind. As far as possible. 1000 years less advanced maybe. What better way to keep the slaves than keep them in the dark? Then, I would put this highly advanced technology in movies, i'd show it to them out right, BUT, i would call it "Science Fiction" they are dumb, they would buy it completely. They would think it only exists in movies, furthering my control over them.
Just saying....

HELP! URGENT! SIM CARD!
Today, I got my iPhone XR unlocked/activated Simple Mobile. The lady used a card that said “T-Mobile Compatible” at the top of the card, if it’s important. She took the SIM from the card and she put it into the phone. She didn’t use my iCloud to register or connect my phone to a computer. A passcode box came up, like the one that comes up when you need to lock your SIM. Not like the passcode, it’s like a box. She typed something in. What did she type in? Can I get a long-term "burner" phone strictly for texts and just pay a one-time amount or only pay to get more texts when I run out? All of the apps I've looked at have monthly fees.
So I just want a burner phone for giving to websites that require it to sign up or things like that. A short-term burner won't work because if I ever get locked out of a site, I'm not sure if they will only let me verify it's me by texting my phone in order to get a new password (whatever site it may be).
I'd only realistically need to do this a handful of times each year, at most, but I do need the number to be long-term which is why the "free" or one-time payment options on apps like Burner or Hushed don't work for me. I don't care about making calls at all.

Is networking the only thing to do in the IT field/industry?
A comment from my teacher when I was frustrated and struggling a lot with a project we're doing in Windows Server 2012: "You chose the wrong field if you hate networking."
I didn't know network administration (Network+?) was the only possible work in the IT field. Nor do I hate it, so much as I am slow to get it. Most of my class struggles with it (we recently had a test all but two students failed).

They say it's gonna provide a thousand of local diming zones that will deliver deep blacks near to an oled TVs. If this works out as promised it's gonna be an amazing combination espically that TCL usually offer their tvs in a reasonable price for what you get. Maybe 3500-4500$ for this one? Who knows.
In top of that it's 8K 75 inch TV, HDMI 2.1, SoundBar with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision HDR.
What do you think? trash or treasure?

Employer wants me to use ethernet instead of wifi, but I live on a boat.
Hi everyone! I work remotely and am trying to sort out how to at least make it look like I'm not using WiFi while working.
We use a phone to provide wifi on the boat so no router or Ethernet is available. My wifi hasn't given me issues so I've been looking into using my phone for tethering.
So my question is, how will this look on an IT test? Can they tell that I'm still essentially using WiFi or does it look like I'm on Ethernet? I imagine a network test shows where my connection is coming from but mayhaps I'm wrong.
Any insight or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

What is going on with my second HDD?
(Model: ST500DM002
OS: Windows 10 operating on the C: HDD)
Hi everybody! New user here!
I had a problem a few hours ago... I left my PC hibernating, and suddenly the power at home went off. An hour later i restarted my PC and everything seemed to be ok, but as i executed a program located on my second HDD (Disk D : ) my PC froze and kicked me from the program... I restarted it as i noticed the Disk was not being detected and now it simply won't be detected either on the BIOS or Disk Manager... The Disk is connected and it's new (bought by a Friend some time ago) and i've tried switching cables between the C : and D : to see if there is a problem but the only thing it does is make some sort of booting noise and spin for a few seconds, it makes a "tick"-like noise and it then stops... I really need your help to at least know what to do... Please...

Any MFi experts here? Quick question.
Do we need Mfi if we are building an ios app to control a professional rgb laser show projector?
We would be connecting the laser projector via ethernet. The iOS device would have to have a 3rd party mfi ethernet adapter.
If it does work, is there any chance our app be deactivated from the iOS store for not using mfi?

Device to capture the noise of your internal organs
Hi Reddit, I am looking for a sense of direction to a device (or closest thing with potential for the below use), is there a device that could potentially capture the noises emmited from your internal organs, a in-depth capture device. There is a lost art of Ayurvedic practice that actually has the capability of a highly accurate diagnosis of health issues via studying the sounds that your organs make. I'm doing some research in regards to that. Any input would be highly appreciated.

Best way to save a phone that was just dropped in water?
Hey everyone! The only reason I thought this was an appropriate thread is because most people have phones, so many of you have likely had this issue in the past, and people may be able to come to this thread in the future to see how it worked for me. I just dropped my iPhone into the dog's water bowl while I was cooking and it was probably in there for like 4 seconds. I immediately shut the system off, took off the case, dried off the external of the housing, and threw it in some rice. I would like to know how many of you have had success stories with rice and/or dropping your phone in water. Especially if you have an iPhone or 6S. I have heard that you can put your device in an oven at a low temp to help evaporate some of the water. Can anyone confirm this method? Are there any alternative methods? thanks!

My phone charger broke and I'll only be able to get another one in a few days. I found one that looks similar to my old one in a drawer at home but the stats are different so I'm afraid it might set my house on fire if I get it wrong so here they are.
input: voltage identical. Factory charger has 0.2A while the one I found has 0.3A
output: voltage identical(5). Factory charger has 1A while the one found has 2A

The social media site, Reddit, notified some users about suspicious activity regarding their account. I also have a son (24) who lives 4 hours away who streams out Direct remotely. Is this service available with Uverse? Thanks all.

How do nationwide internet shutdowns work?
In the weeks leading up to the DRC presidential election, there have been varying degrees of shutdown- of mobile networks in parts of the country, then of internet in the capital and finally a nationwide shutdown of the internet.
How does this work? Who shuts down the internet- mobile companies or governments? What if I lived close to the border, or on the outskirts of a shutdown area? How are zones delineated?
I'm also aware of some people having special devices/methods of circumventing the shutdown (e.g. Journalists, who have been sending their material to international broadcasters from within the country)
How does this work? Do they connect to services outside the country or use different methods of connection to typical devices?
So many questions. Excuse my (very obvious) technological ignorance and thanks in advance for any insights.

Rx 460 vs 750 ti?
So long story short , I found a 750 ti and a RX 460 at the same exact price. The 750 ti is a Dual Storm X version and the RX 460 is a Gigabyte WindForce OC version. I only play PUBG ,Fortnite and CS:GO. I will play PUBG at very low but draw distance high 900p , Fortnite the same and CS:GO all low 1280x960 . Which one of those 2 cards will perform better? I'd rather not overclock them.

Help with monitor resolution

I plan to use this for Excel work
My question is: my eyes are currently good enough to read the text in the excel formula bar perfectly. But if the text was any smaller is struggle with the work I'm doing. Will buying this new monitor make everything smaller or does the larger size offset the pixels? Im wondering if I buy this new monitor will I have to squint when using excel. Im hopping the buttons and formula bar will the the same size or bigger.

Buying new laptop, any suggestions?
I currently have a mac-book pro but i'm over it. Been looking at chrome books or pixel books but looking for more input. Any suggestions welcome, i would mostly be using it for school (university), light downloading, maybe a small amount of gaming. I'm not broke so price isn't an issue, but I want something reasonably priced.
EDIT: I have a Xbox so I wouldnt be doing too much gaming besides browser games to kill some time. Something a bit smaller and compact would be prefered over a gaming PC.

Why would the numbers on the back of a work badge be useful to my supervisor?
Ok so I work for a company that has employees who work onsite for customers. Most of us employees end up with badges to get in and out of buildings. So my supervisor sends out an email with all employees copied stating that if we used badges to send him the numbers on the back. I played dumb and said I don’t think I have numbers. What is this for? He called me and said it’s to make sure we are in the building when we clock in. I didn’t ask him to elaborate because I didn’t want to seem suspicious.
So how can he use this information? Wouldn’t it be a nuisance to continuously call the customer asking if we punched our badge at the door? He couldn’t possibly use other companies information being outside of the company could he?
Also they do have tracking devices on our work phones but anytime I go somewhere or leave early I just turn airplane mode on so they can’t track me using GPS. I’ve also just sent myself the links to clock in on my personal phone so I can just start leaving my work phone on site. I added a VPN app for added protection in case they try to identify the IP address.

Future Gaming System Similar To "Infinity" By Callister Inc. In Black Mirror S4E1
Hi everyone!
For the people, that do not know, what Black Mirror is, it's a Netflix show about future technologies, often having no happy ending.
I recently watched the Episode "USS Callister" and it got me thinking.
There was this gaming system called "Infinity" where you you could pop something on your head and it sticks on it like a magnet. As soon as it's activated, it transports your subconscious fully into the game, therefore, you will become unconscious in real life. It is basically an upgrade of virtual reality, where you can fully feel, move around and exist in the game. The NPC's/other characters would be AI.
You "travel" between worlds by using a tablet in the episode, but I think depending on the game you are playing there are different ways to change that.
The graphics would look exactly like real life.
Personally, I always dreamed of becoming a footballer and with a device like that, it would almost be like playing in a real game in a real stadium, with thousands of fans, wouldn't it? I always wanted to experience what it would be like to score in front of 50.000 people.
I can imagine, that people would get addicted to this way too easily and neglect real life for the virtual one. And what if you play a horror game and then get permanently mentally damaged because it was too real?
How do you feel about this? Is this a real thing that can exist in the future? If yes, when? Is this the future of entertainment?

50 Free Apple Watches Series 4
So I was online shopping for a new apple watch and I came across this company who is giving away 50 free Apple watches series 4 to celebrate the new year. Would've cost me 550$ at the apple store but here I only had to cover a small shipping fee (under 10 bucks). I redeemed a white 44 mm one for myself and I thought people in this subreddit would like to take advantage of this giveaway too so I figured I would share it with y'all. Here is where I found the deal, I don't know if there are any free ones left (there were 18 left when i got mine):

Self-driving cars MAY have higher labor costs than regular cars, even without drivers
https://www.ft.com/content/125e4ef4-fc6f-11e8-b03f-bc62050f3c4e
The article looks at Waymo and their current team -- Waymo currently has standby drivers for safety precautions, who will eventually be removed, but also a hazard team (software engineers) to deal with operational issues.
With self-driving cars, drivers are no longer available to troubleshoot road problems (jams, fallen trees on roads, etc.) in person, and so this low-cost additional "service" now has to be separately provided by either AI or support staff. It seems clear that the support staff (inclusive of tech support) will be more expensive on a per person basis for now, however self-driving eliminates the baseline of driver labor cost, such that eventual advances in driving and support AIs will reduce marginal cost.
FT provided no support in the article for how it will be more expensive overall.

Why doesn't apple release an app for the iPhone to be used as a controller/ mouse for the ipad or macbook?
Pretty weird idea but hear me out. Surely to include a simple infrared light into the bottom of the new iPhone wouldn't be too demanding on a company with a trillion dollar market cap? Furthermore those with an ipad/ ipad Pro/macbook are more than likely going to already be in the apple ecosystem and already have an iPhone in their life. A simple bit of software to allow the two devices to pair via Bluetooth could open up a huge range of possibilities for app developers in both gaming and productivity uses.
Just a little brainstorm whilst on a boring train ride, lemme know what you all think.

Need help finding a pair of earbuds
I’m looking for earbuds. Either wireless with curved tips, but not sport ones, or wired (still curved) with the lightning plug in. Also, if anyone knows a good adapter so I can charge my phone & listen to music. I’ve been looking and will continue to look. But just trying to expand the help for the search. Any & all suggestions are awesome.

Is the new iPad pro late 2018 worth the money?
Currently, have the 10.5in iPad pro and plan to give it to my little brother since he wants it. I am an avid sketcher and have recently been getting into digital art. So I draw here and there on my iPad pro and usually take notes on it as well.
I was wondering if I should upgrade to the latest model that came out?

WiFi extension question
Could someone recommend a good WiFi extender or mesh network system to install to my parents house? The WiFi in their house is Verizon Fios, which is really good when connected to Ethernet or within the room with the router, but is super limited on its range. It’s patchy upstairs or even in our living room which is no more than 25ft away... My parents are willing to spend up to 400 for a quality extended but I don’t want them to purchase crappy ones.

iPhone modification
Not sure if this is the right place to ask...
I want to install a small timer switch inside my iphone which automatically turns it off and keeps it off for a set amount of time.
Anyone have any ideas what kind of switch i’d need to buy or any company/person who’d be able to do this?
