For starters, I want to go briefly over the general "surface" parts. These are largely the same for each surface device so I'll be brief:
The surface go is the perfect form factor for a ton of people. The device feels good in 1 hand, and is approximately the size of the standard ipad. It has large bezels but they do not bother me since 1) I understand this is a lower tier device in the surface line, 2) I treat it like my laptop and I don't care as much about a laptops bezels, and 3) because i hold this thing by the screen every day and its genuinely nice to have bezel to grab onto. I heard people saying that this is just an excuse, but as someone who has used their surface multiple hours a day for a little over a week now, I can say that the bezels are definitely a plus for me, not a con.
The camera isn't just passable. Its one of the better laptop webcams i've had the pleasure to use, especially on the front facing camera. Windows hello works quickly, pictures come out clear and video chatting is a dream.
The kick-stand works exactly the same as it would on the larger surface devices. the friction hinge is an engineering marvel and the device works flawlessly as a media consumption product.
The speakers are plenty loud. louder than most cell phones by a good margin but with a much fuller sound than you would get on most handsets.
I have a type cover to use but opted to go for a third party stylus so i won't be covering the surface pen today. The type cover is smaller on this device obviously, but I have no trouble typing on it at the same speed and accuracy i'd type on a traditional laptop. It even has MORE key travel than a macbook laptop with the butterfly switch keys. The keys are backlit, not too loud, and the trackpad is flawless with its use of microsoft precision drivers. The type cover snaps on quickly however i'll admit, i wish it was easier to pull off. maybe if there was a release button or something. Its not too hard but i'm often worried i'm damaging the type cover when i remove it.
While I enjoy the inclusion of usb type C (which you can charge the device with alongside the surface connector), I don't do any of the normal things you'd want one for. I don't use external displays or anything and I'd honestly rather just have a usb type A port. That said, I was able to get an adapter for 2 dollars on ebay so is honestly fine. the SD card on the back is useful too.
Alright now that we got the stuff you already probably knew out of the way, lets talk about the 399 model I'm using. Every youtube reviewer was given a copy of the 550 dollar model and they all recommend that one despite never using the 399 model. They claim its too slow or that it cannot do "heavy" tasks.
Lets start by going over whats different: The processor is identical but there is 8 gb of ram instead of 4. I'll be honest, while my desktop gaming pc has 8 gb of ram, I've never used a laptop with more than 4 gb. Ram doesn't speed up your computer (in the traditional sense, I know that in certain particularly taxing tasks you CAN see speed improvement with more ram) and your day to day tasks will not be affected by less ram. I do not multitask much at all. I've always been meticulous about closing applications i'm not using anyway.
The real spot you would expect difference however is the difference between 64 gb of emmc memory and 128 gb of ssd.
While everybody loves to gas on and on about "emmc is slower than ssd", its also a lot faster than an hdd. This is the first laptop i've had that was not on an hdd so it feels plenty snappy. I've looked at both models side by side, and unless you're transferring large files, you really won't be able to tell the difference.
This thing can handle all of the applications i've tried this last week. it launches steam in big picture mode without lag, it navigates chrome well but i'd recommend edge. Not for performance reasons, but chrome doesn't scroll well with touch input. Edge is better if you're using your fingers but migrating your passwords can be a pain in the ass.
I've been able to use this system to stream steam games from my desktop pc and it hasn't skipped a beat.
I've even seen streamers playing fortnite at playable settings (i have never tried the game but i know its popular so worth mentioning).
The bottom line is, if you're worried the 399 model won't perform well, you have nothing to worry about. The pentium kaby-lake processor is more than capable to handle anything but taxing applications. I don't edit photos and videos, and all the gaming i do is streaming-based.
All and all, if you don't have the extra 150 to shell out for the upgraded model, don't let that deter you. Obviously more ram cannot hurt, 64 MORE gigs of storage cannot hurt, and faster memory can't hurt. But this device is plenty powerful enough to use as even a primary computer if you needed it to.
