Does compression of my photos degrade quality.

Hello. Not sure if this is in the right sub.

I want to upload a lot of photos online to clear my harddrive. Im using the free Googledrive about 15 gb.

I was wondering if I compress the images to save room and upload more, would that effect quality when I download them again?

Also, is there free software to compress it and de compress the images?
