What is API? So confused....
I am a YouTuber with a Wordpress hosting on its own domain.
I got a plugin to have video playlists embedded into my blog straight from YouTube and I needed an API from Google to do it.
It ask me to list websites that were authorized to access the API and restrict it to certain sites.
Why? Is there are security breech risk? It's just a playlist. I've looked up sites to explain API and I still don't understand. Please ELI5.
The videos are monetized if that matters.

Smaller Urban Stores Need RFID
The New York Times published an article on July 25 titled "Retailers' Idea: Think Smaller in Urban Push." The story reports that retailers are moving into cities across the United States in an effort to attract younger buyers, but are abandoning formats that worked in the suburbs for smaller stores. "It is a significant shift from their approach in the past," the writer notes, "when they tried to cram their big-box formats into cities, often prompting big fights."
What piqued my interest in this story, which seems to have nothing to do with RFID, is that it potentially has a lot to do with RFID. Here is how radio frequency identification can help retailers trying to sell in a smaller footprint store.
-
Improved merchandising. At a big suburban store, displaying a large number of styles, or stock-keeping units (SKUs), is not a challenge—but it is at a smaller store. Many retailers avoid out-of-stocks at large stores by filling shelves with the same item. RFID enables retailers to offer greater variety, since they need not maintain safety stocks. Accurate inventory visibility lets a store see when an item is out of stock, so a retailer could have one of each of 5,000 items on display, rather than five of each of 1,000 products.
-
Improved replenishment. If you have less stock on the floor, it becomes more important to restock shelves regularly. Not only can RFID inform managers when an item becomes out of stock, but readers deployed between the store floor and the back room can determine whether a product was moved out of that back room. Software can alert a manager if, say, an item isn't restocked within 10 minutes.
-
Improved warehouse-to-store shipping accuracy. If a warehouse picks the wrong items or sends them to the wrong store, a large retailer might still have a lot of safety stock in a large back room, enabling it to prevent out-of-stocks. But at an urban store, there is little storage space. RFID can help prevent out-of-stocks, by ensuring that the retailer orders the proper items, and that the warehouse picks and ships the correct products.
-
Improved visibility into other stores' inventory. In an urban setting, a retailer might operate another location nearby. With an RFID solution in place, a store associate could obtain real-time visibility into the inventory of that other store, and could then tell a customer, "We don't have that item in stock in your size, but I see that our midtown store has seven in stock."
Stores moving into urban environments might find that execution is more vital at smaller stores than at larger ones, since large safety stocks can mask poor execution. Within an urban setting, if you disappoint a customer, there will likely be a competing retailer just around the corner. So my advice to those retailers looking to do business in a big city is this: Take a look at RFID first.

Does Nintendo's partnership with NVIDIA point to something more? Could NVIDIA plan on allowing the NX to use its GRID system to stream games over the internet?
You guys know a bit more about this than me probably....would this be possible? Outside of NVIDIA expanding their GRID network would anything else need to be done to allow this? I assume it would be subscription based, and will be rolled out slowly.
Its almost confirmed that the new nintendo console will contain a tegra chip, which has a lot of people pissed off and are saying its a nail in the coffin for Nintendo for not offering a more powerful system.....What if they partnered with NVIDA not just for its chip, but also to use its GRID network and have NVIDIA and Nintendo both profit from it?
NVIDIA offers its game streaming thru its SHIELD which hasnt sold well, maybe they could plan on using the same game streaming service on an updated network with the NX? Even if the NX sells bad it will probably sell better than the SHIELD.
This will allow for the NX to display better graphics than the NX hardware is capable of. They would gain lots of third party support, which they have a problem with, because third party companies would essentially just be releasing their PC versions for NX...it would cost them nothing or next to nothing to have their games on NX.
Here are some rumors and business decisions that I think kinda point to this...
Rumors about the NX working with PC's and other consoles....
- Possibly talking about running PC games, and the ability for many console gamers to crossplay with PC users...Meaning that NX users could play something like rocket league with ps4 players and something similar on newer crossplay xbone games.
An NVIDIA chip being used in a console, which hasnt happened in a long time.
- Could be NVIDIA being competitive and offering chip cheaply, but I think it points to a much larger partnership.....NVIDIA has the best game streaming network....they want to gain more subscriptions especially after the poor sales of the shield console and Nintendo wants third developer support, which brings me to next point...
Third party devs, such as Witcher 3 creators, said they are super excited for what they have seen with NX...
- when they shouldnt be if the NX can only run Tegra-level graphics. They sound really enthusiastic like they are not just playing nice with nintendo. They would have to make entirely different games for a system that might or might not fail if it was designed to run on Tegra...thats a lot of money to invest. Running PC versions to display to the NX costs developers nothing...These DEVS would not be excited if they knew they would have to create separate games designed for high end tablets! Its like developing something for the original Wii when compared to the 360! They would not be so enthusiastic and excited if they knew they couldnt easily transfer their games over to new hardware! And the main witcher 3 DEV sounded extremely enthusiastic and helped to make one of best looking games ever, and they dont make a lot of games...He should be terrified if they knew the NX only ran on a tablet GPU! I dont think he was just excited to release the gwent card game!
Rumors about the docking part being released months after the mobile part.
- May take longer for Nvidia to expand network, maybe the docking station has a better display output that allows games to put out at 4k on TVs....Nvidia might want to judge how popular the streaming service will become first by judging it on portable version....requires a lot more bandwidth to display at higher resolutions(Grid 2.0 allows 1080p, but they will eventually want to do it at higher resolutions). Might be that NVIDIA doesnt have network to display higher resolutions to so many people at first, fact that most people dont have 4k tvs would also make sense why nintendo would hold back on releasing a docking station that increases video output, has better wifi, and ethernet port.
Nvidia's investment in their game streaming network and the failure of their SHIELD console...
- NX will sell better than shield even if it sells as bad as Wii U, maybe NVIDIA wants to make more money thru subscriptions and not enough people are buying shields to make it as lucrative as they expected. When Nvidia discussed its GRID 2.0 update the spokepersons mainly aimed toward remote desktop and running high end application over the internet usually...way less focus was put on the gaming portion, could be that they are giving up on shield but maybe its because they are upgrading their network for reasons they cant say yet publicly....because they hare going to mainly shift their shield gaming subscription service over to the NX! Thats a lot more people using it, a lot more servers requires, and a lot more money they make!

ELI5: Why do newer messaging/calling apps including Allo/Duo, WhatsApp, and Signal REQUIRE a mobile phone number?
As the world moves more and more to internet-based communication, traditional phone plans and SMS are becoming more and more obsolete.
Personally, I have access to WiFi at home, school, and work. I have a data plan for my tablet so that I can stay connected even when I'm out and about. So with the growing ubiquity of VOIP and online messaging, you'd think I should be in constant contact with almost everyone I know at all times. I can say goodbye to the silly, outdated cost of a calling/SMS plan from a mobile provider.
But there's a missing link in the chain: since I don't have a mobile phone, I don't have a mobile phone number, so I'm not allowed to use several of the most popular VOIP or messaging apps.
So what the heck is going on? That doesn't make any sense. Since these apps are aiming to disrupt the traditional messaging paradigm, shouldn't they be actively facilitating the abandonment of traditional phone numbers?
It of course makes sense that these apps can link to your phone number to find contacts. Such a move makes it easier for people to find each other on the apps, which means a quicker death to traditional phone calls and SMS. But they REQUIRE a phone number? I just don't get it.

Made a post about this in r/pcmasterrace also. Wanted to get another opinion. Maybe you guys can pin it down!
I'm having a rather big issue with my GTX 1080 FTW, and well that is my card can't maintain 60 fps 1080p in most games. It can't run GTAV at 2x MSAA with FXAA at 1080p everything else maxed out besides advanced options at 60 fps. It can barely hold 50 fps in Hitman, and in Arma 3 it sits around 70-80 in single player, and 15-40 in multiplayer (but this is server side, not the card I know this). These aren't bad frame rates but I'm positive my GPU should be achieving much higher ones, at least according to benchmarks and reviews. Now, the biggest culprit I could think of is my CPU. It is a i5 4690k at 3.7 GHz. But even this shouldn't hold back the card. If you have any idea what it could be, please reply to this post and we can talk about it. Really disappointed right now. My specs are as follows
GPU: EVGA GTX 1080 FTW CPU: i5-4690k @ 3.7 Ghz Motherboard: MSI Z97a Krait Edition PSU: 850w EVGA B2 Ram: 8gb (x1) Mushkin

Identifying PCs by tagging
Hi all, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for what kind of information should be put on a tag identifying a PC to allow one to quickly identify what sort of computer it is(this is for people who aren't techies btw). For example, model name, processor speed, etc (I'm not a techie either so please forgive me). Thanks in advance

Elon Musk Tesla Master Plan II TL;DR
- Tesla is the only car company not to go bankrupt, besides Ford
- SolarCity will probably be bought out by Tesla. Tesla's energy storing Powerwall combined with SolarCity panels can become a one package product
- Tesla Semi - they are working on a heavy-duty truck
- Tesla Bus is also something we should see as a concept soon
- Self driving cars are imminent. It is estimated that 6 billion miles (10 billion km) would be required to get regulatory approval. Currently pacing at 3 million miles (5 million km) per day.
- Car sharing + self driving cars = Profit! ... Literally, you will be able to connect your vehicle to a publically rentable fleet, it will drive itself to the renter and then return to your garage
My question is, what will be on Master Plan Part 3?

Computer virus
My wifes computer got a virus. I did a recover to the last safe download but the downloads that were brought on by the virus remained so i went through and removed them one by one even deleting their file manually after the uninstall. The virus changed the browser search shit and everytime i correct those and close the browser they revert back to the nonsense. im not sure what to do at this point and cant afford to take it to a tech. Please any help to solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Data Caps on Internet are complete bullshit and anti-consumer
So I recently moved into a new house that did not have the ISP we had before. There were only two there, TWC and AT&T. Both pretty shit but one thing we noticed was that AT&T did not offer Unlimited data. What they offered was a 600GB monthly cap which is really low if you have a family.
Time Warner Cable did not have the cap but they were a little bit more expensive and their customer service is shit. So we essentially had to deal with paying more through overages or getting horrible customer service and more downtime.
We talked with AT&T Uverse and apparently you can get Unlimited if you add $30 to your bill. That's almost a 50% increase in your bill payment just so you can use your service that you pay for. Ridiculous. But even better, add $40 and we'll throw in cable with Unlimited Internet free!
We ended up going with the cable offer because it's a much better value than just Unlimited Data. But the fact that bundling with cable gives you unlimited makes me believe that they're just trying to push cable at the expense of Internet.
Oh, if you go over the cap it is $10 for every 50GB. Absolutely insane!

How does Remote Neural Monitoring communicate information?
It seems that even with 97% EMF blocking material RNM is unperturbed. The only way to wirelessly communicate through EMF blockers is sound or neutrino beams. And sound couldn't transfer information unnoticed and neutrino beams can only transfer at a rate of 1b/s.
How is this possible?
Also if you want some info on this technology Daniel Estulin and Magnus Olsson from RT did a report you can find on youtube.

ubuntu/ GParted SSD partitions, re align to 4096?
When I partition an SSD do I still need to match multiples of 4096 for optimal performance?
From: http://ift.tt/1f2irP3
To see if your partitions are aligned correctly, hit the Start menu and type in msinfo32. Enter Msinfo32 and go to Components > Storage > Disks. Look for your SSD on the list and find the "Partition Starting Offset" item. If this number is divisible by 4096 (that is, if dividing it by 4096 equals a whole number and not a decimal), your partition is correctly aligned. If not, you need to realign it. Luckily, this is pretty easy to do with the Gparted live CD. If you have an Ubuntu live CD lying around, that will work too, since it has Gparted available under System > Administration.
Start up Gparted and find your SSD in the upper-right dropdown menu. Select it, and click on your first partition in the menu. Hit the Resize/Move button in the toolbar. Change the "Free Space Preceding" box to 2MB, uncheck "Round to Cylinders", and hit "Resize/Move". (If you're using a newer live CD, check the "MiB" box). Hit Apply once and let it do its thing.
Now hit Resize/Move again, and change the "Free Space Preceding" box to 1MB. Uncheck "Round to Cylinders" again, hit Resize/Move, then click Apply. Now your drive will be aligned to exactly 2048 blocks after the beginning of the disk, which allows for optimal SSD performance. Note that if you have multiple partitions on your SSD, you'll need to repeat this process for each partition, not just the first one on the disk.

Silly question co-worker and I are discussing http://ift.tt/Rb44fF - I'm fairly sure it is satirical, proudly showing off "inventions" like a watch that alerts you of phone calls, touch screens, slide to unlock. Just the author is rather droll, and it is easy to mistake for a serious website (as my co-worker thinks it is).
Would be great to hear reddits opinion on this!

iPhone questions(6 plus)
So I wanted to get a light kit to replace my iPhone's apple logo then I started looking into other things-battery upgrades/speaker upgrades/storage upgrades/etc What I'm interested in is has anybody ever done any of these things to their iPhone? And is it possible to just tear apart your phone and end up with something much better(like a better speaker and faster processor<almost sure you can't upgrade the processor) but where does it end : question what are your favorite iPhone mods you've seen/done

Why isn't the police using google location or find my phone to find missing people?
(Let me know if you know a more appropriate subreddit for this post)
Why isn't the police using google location or find my phone to find missing people?
In denmark we have a missing 17 year old girl, for a couple of days now. She was on her way home from a night in the city, when she disappeared. It's bothering me, that from what I know, we have the actual apps and hardware to potentially know where she is or at least where she was last time the phone was turned on.
I know that maybe Googles location service isn't activated and that Google can't help then. But if the phone is turned on at the time the parents know that something's wrong and they don't have the password to find the phone themselves via a find my phone app (both apple and Google have a dedicated app) or use Google location service, then why don't the police have an effective way of reporting it to Google or apple and just get the actual location in the name of a rescuing?
And for Google location service, why don't the police just get the latest few locations from Google location service, which maybe could find the girl or at least give some insight.
That would partially solve the problem of personal location information, if google only gave the latest locations to the police, in the name of a rescuing.

Like all these programs and popups are appearing out of nowhere, in the toolbar, deskstop ect. any help would be appreciated, thanks beforehand!

Do Mobile ISP Retract Plans When Using Too Much Of Your Unlimited Data?
I live in Canada and am with Bell. I've heard that they retract the plans (by saying "oh, this plan isn't available anymore, kthxbai") of those who use too much of their unlimited data.
I have unlimited data and have used 22 GB this month and am afraid that they might retract my plan.
Does anyone know if this is true? Do they actually do this?

Whenever companies make big deals to buy out smaller companies how much taxes is actually paid?
I'm sure you have all heard the stories of big companies paying big bucks to acquire smaller companies. Especially in the tech field like Google buying YouTube for $1.65 billion, Facebook buying Instagram for $1 billion, and so on. So I've always wondered, there's probably a shit load of money that these guys have to pay in taxes right? Anyone have any idea how taxes work in these cases? Like who has to pay taxes buyer, seller, or both? I'm just curious :)

Is concern about privacy a generational thing?
I was introduced to the Internet in the late 90s on Prodigy and AOL. Back then you would only go by your screen name or "handle" except with family and real-life friends you met online. The Internet at that time seemed like the Wild West and the smart thing to do was approach it with caution. Being somewhat aware of the hacking culture and what people were capable of, I always was hesitant to put myself out there online. That view of the Internet has stuck with me till this day.
I've noticed that protecting privacy online seems to mean more to the older generation of internet users more than the younger ones. That's not to say that younger people aren't advocating for privacy rights online, it's just that the majority of them don't really care about privacy in this age of social media. We now live in a world where having your full name , your work history, and your daily thoughts posted out there for the world to see is the norm. While the risk of having your identity compromised and personal information hacked is probably at an all-time high. Can we have it both ways?

Introducing a Terabyte Internet Experience
We’re writing to let you know that we will be trialing a new XFINITY Internet data usage plan in your area. Starting August 1, 2016, your monthly XFINITY Internet service will include a terabyte data usage plan (that’s 1,024 GB).
With 1 terabyte of data you can stream about 700 hours of HD video, play more than 12,000 hours of online games, or download 600,000 high-res photos in a month. If you believe you will need more data, we also offer an Unlimited Data Option.
Your average data usage for the past three months is 451 GB, so based on your historical usage, with this new plan you can stream, surf, game, download or do whatever you want online, worry free. Less than 1% of Comcast XFINITY Internet customers use a terabyte of data or more in a month.
Details of the Terabyte and Unlimited Plans:
1 Terabyte (TB) included/month If 1 TB is exceeded, $10 for each additional data block of up to 50 GB/month $200 overage limit - no matter how much data you use Unlimited Data $50 per month No overage charges — no matter how much data you use You can also track and manage your usage so there are never any surprises about how much data you use. Here are a few tools you can use:
- Usage meter – Monitor how much data you have used with our Data Usage Meter.
- Data Usage Calculator - Estimate your data usage with our Calculator Tool. Simply enter how often and how much you typically use the Internet, and the calculator will estimate your monthly data usage.
- Notifications - Should you approach a terabyte of usage, we will send you a courtesy "in-browser" notice and an email letting you know when you reach 90%, 100%, 110%, and 125% of that amount. Usage notifications will not be sent to customers who enroll in the unlimited data option. Learn more about notifications here. For the small percentage of customers who use more than a terabyte of data, we will offer them two courtesy months so they will not be billed the first two times they exceed a terabyte while they are getting comfortable with the new data usage plan. If you have any questions about the new data usage plan, please see our FAQs.
Thank you for being an XFINITY Internet Customer.
Sincerely,
John Crowley Regional Senior Vice President of Comcast’s Greater Chicago Region
Please note that this is a consumer trial. Comcast may modify or discontinue this trial at any time. However, we will notify you in advance of any such change.
Obviously, I'm disappointed that they're trialing a data plan in my area (I'm in the Chicago area). But I'm happy that it's not 300GB or 500GB.

How should Google increase its mobile advertising revenue?
Hi reddit. I am doing a research on Google now and found that 90% of Google's revenue is from advertising. My professor said that somehow Google is a little behind in mobile advertising game and she thinks that I should try to see if there is anything that Google can do to expand its market share in mobile advertising. Do you guys have any idea? Let me know ;)

Laptop has a black screen when opened, have to hard reset to turn on.
My Lenovo Y510p is having some problems. When I open up my laptop, it has a black screen even though it shows everything is on. I must hard reset my laptop to make the display turn on. Do note that I have a 2nd monitor hooked up through VGA to my laptop. Not too big of a deal if I can't find a solution, but it is kind of a inconvenience to me. Thanks for any help!
