iPhone chargers: A true love story
So you get your brand new iPhone and right out of the box it looks like god above is giving you his best creation known to man. A quote from someone at my local Verizon store, “Every time a new iPhone gets open, an angel gets its wings”. You admire the sleek design and are in complete awe of your recent purchase. For the first month you treat the device like your child; cleaning it everyday, trying to make the screen as clean as you can, but to no avail it somehow becomes dirty. You research the best case for you phone, acting like it’s some super-max prison that will protect it at all cost.
Another month goes by and you start to notice the that your precious lightning cable has started to malfunction. You twist and bend the cord and it works for a couple of days, but then a week goes by and the charger completely stops working. Fueled with frustration, you go to your local gas station to look for the closest thing to Apple’s version of the lightning cable. You spend 20+ dollars on this high tech, top of the line braided cable that claims to have none of the problems the dearest company Apple has. You plug it in and it works. Eureka!
Not even a week goes by and your special ops version 2.0 non slip braided cable breaks. You’re beyond pissed. To make yourself feel better, you decide to create your own charger with some cable and wire you found in your basement. You spend hours on end making everything perfect, being careful not to fuck this one up.
Ah the moment of truth. You plug it in crossing your fingers that it will hold it’s charge and be the best little charger you’ve ever lazily made. It charges for 20 seconds, then sparks. Your phone goes black, and you now don’t have an iPhone. You have a 1000 dollar piece of hot metal with no insurance because you thought it was a waste of money.

Advice Please - Cell Phone/Plan Dilemma
Hi all, I'm in a looking for advice because I can't decide what I want to do with my cell phone situation.
Right now I have an Iphone 6 that's horribly slow. Close to unusable. The GPS is super spotty. It's connection to Wifi works about 75% of the time. The charge blows. And for some odd reason my phone, like, calls numbers randomly without it showing as an out going call.. i get calls from random numbers all the time saying that they are calling me back about a missed call.
Also, I just graduated college and am about to start paying my own phone plan and will either get off the plan my brother and I share or pay my dad my share of that said plan. My brother and I split a plan where collectively we get unlimited data. Essentially I would pay $85 a month for unlimited talk/text/data.
Any recommendations going forward about what type of phone I should get or what type of plan I should go on? I generally use a lot of data - 10gb a month - but thats partly because I know my plan is unlimited and my phone's connection with wifi is trash.
I was thinking I might want to go on Google's Project Fi plan, but I haven't heard too many 1st hand accounts of that yet. If i were to go that direction, I would pay a max of $80 a month for virtually the same plan as Verizon, with the possibility of spending less depending on data used. Also, if that was the case I would go on to purchase a Google Pixel. That brings me to another dilemma - should I go ahead now and purchase either the Pixel 2 or 2 XL, or should I try to wait until October when the 3 and 3 XL are suspected to be released. If I were to wait, I could possibly get the 2 or 2 XL for cheaper, or buy a superior product in the 3 or 3 XL that hopefully has wireless charging, along with additional features. Anyone have any comments about Project Fi or Google Pixels?
Money is not like a huge huge deal, but no shit I'm trying to make sure I'm on the best deal for the best price.
Thanks y'all

Know How RAM Affects Performance of Your PC/Laptop!
Your computer's system memory is made up of physical memory, called Random Access Memory (RAM), and virtual memory.
System memory is not permanent storage, like a hard disk drive that saves its contents when you turn off your system.
When you start a program, your processor gives a command to retrieve the program from the hard drive.
Once the files are retrieved, the system needs a workspace to manipulate the data and allow you to interact with it.
This digital countertop is your RAM.
Your system places your programs in RAM, or the digital countertop, temporarily while you're working with them so that the processor can access that information faster and more easily.
Understanding RAM:
Generally, the more RAM your system has, the larger the digital countertop you have to work on and the faster your programs will run.
If your system is running slowly due to lack of RAM, you might be tempted to increase virtual memory because it's less expensive.
However, adding RAM is a better solution because your processor can read data from RAM much faster than from a hard drive.
RAM has two main attributes that affect your system's performance: memory capacity and memory speed.
Operating system Limitations:
Today, most systems are equipped with a 64-bit operating system.
Some systems have older design and utilize a 32-bit (X86) operating system.
Before you upgrade your RAM, ensure that your operating system will support the new amount of memory.
Microsoft has an excellent listing in the hyperlink below listing Windows versions and the amount of RAM supported: Memory Limits for Windows and Windows Server Releases
Memory capacity: The more gigabytes (GB) your memory module has, the more programs you can have open at once.
2-4 GB. This was the standard RAM capacity and shipped with systems running Windows Vista or XP. This amount of memory could handle single applications. If your system has less than 4GB of RAM, adding more RAM would greatly improve its performance.
4-6 GB. This standard RAM capacity will handle an average user's tasks, such as web browsing, working in Word documents, and emailing, with ease.
6-8 GB. This larger RAM capacity works great for casual gamers and basic multimedia users. It can handle multiple programs open at one time and new technology so that users don't have to upgrade when their needs change.
8+ GB. This robust RAM capacity is perfect for hardcore gamers and high-end multimedia users and creators. These users want to try the newest technology on the market without upgrading their RAM.
Memory Speed: The amount of time that it takes RAM to receive a request from the processor and then read or write data.
Generally, the faster the RAM, the faster the processing speed.
RAM speed is measured in Megahertz (MHz), millions of cycles per second, so that it can be compared to your processor's clock speed.
For Dell desktops and laptops, memory speed can range from the standard 1333MHz all the way up to speeds of 2133MHz.
The speed of your processor and the bus speed of the system motherboard are the limiting factors on the speed of RAM installed in your system.
RAM upgrades are limited by the capability of the system and the availability of expansion slots for adding RAM.
Upgrading RAM:
If you're considering upgrading your RAM to improve your computer's performance, first determine how much RAM your system has and whether the processor uses a 32-bit (X86) or 64-bit register.
To know how to upgrade RAM read https://zappedia.com/pc-memory-upgrade/

[Feedback] A database of 40k+ investors to raise your seed round 💰
I have worked developing a startup for a few years so far. We run a fintech company that requires quite a lot of capital and we always needed to rely on investors to support our business. When I started looking for investors, I found that finding angel investors and venture capitalists was extremely time consuming and hard. I would spend about 10 days to find 500 emails of VCs and Angels and manually put them one by one on my excel spreadsheet. After doing it for a while, I understood that there must be so many people out there who are having similar issues. So we created Investor Hunt - a database of 40k+ investors which will save you hundreds of hours of research on AngelList, Crunchbase, and LinkedIn trying to find the right investors and their emails. Check us out and let us know what you think. 🚀

Will business/enterprise phones and smart pagers make a comeback?
The BYOD movement is losing steam as more and more people want a more manageable work life balance. Was the BB10 operating system five years ahead of the times? It could have been a truly modern work phone built for corporate america, the health sector and government. Of course it was designed to compete directly with iOS and Android and was a failure.
If Blackberry and Microsoft/IBM team up they could put together an amazing product for enterprise users.
Another idea I have is smart pagers. Rudimentary smart phones that have more in common with the Microsoft Kin and Blackberry pager models of yesteryear. Designed from the ground up for people in the medical fields, law enforcement and other emergency personnel.

WEIRD Find My iPhone story/HELP
Hello,
So today, I left my iPhone sitting at a restaurant table for less than a minute. I realized I forgot my phone and turned back to go get it. My waiter also helped me look for it, but after a while, I became convinced that someone swiped it. At first I thought the bus boy might have had it but the person I was having lunch with said that they were suspicious of a group of guys sitting across from us.
In order to not make a scene (we were in a sketchy area of town, very dangerous), we headed home and I borrowed someone else's iPhone to use the Find My iPhone app. I used it and it at first said it was still at the restaurant. We began to turn around to retrieve it but then I noticed that the signal was now moving. It looked as if whoever had it was leaving the restaurant. It eventually ended up across town (5 or so miles from the restaurant) before I finally decided it would be safe to erase the phone (I had credit card info in there, naturally).
I did give the restaurant a means of contacting me. A few hours later, the waiter had called me and told me the bus boy found my phone and that they have it waiting for me. Again, I looked extensively all around my booth, under the seats, and everything, to make sure the phone wasn't there when I first realized it was not on my person. I told him this was odd since the FMI app showed that it was long gone, but that I would be able to pick it up tomorrow.
My question is this: would it be a plausible explanation that FMI malfunctioned? Or would it be safe to say that in some way, the thief returned my phone? And if this is the case, what would you do? I feel like it is awfully suspicious that my phone all of a sudden turns up right back at the place it was stolen after being across town. But I really don't know if I should go retrieve it or not, it just seems really sketchy. Let me know what you think!

Best Ecosystem
Hey y'all. Just wondering. What is the best company to build a tech ecosystem around in terms of compatibilities. People love Apple, but I prefer not to be so mainstream. However I do wish for a great phone and laptop duo in the mix. I was currently thinking Asus over Samsung and LG. But let me know what you guys think. Sorry for the bad wording in advance. I'll clear up any confusion if you need me to. Thanks!

What’s the best way to monitor children on computer?
I have an early grade schooler who has internet based homework for math and English. I also want to let them read children ebooks and access paint programs. I have a computer on windows 10 which allows me to impose parental controls via Microsoft family. However, these are not very granular. I can’t specify to allow a game for up to half an hour a day (eg candy crush). I can only block it outright.
I’m thinking if my kids are always finding workarounds (discovering new games or downloading from AppStore. Recently I found they spent 40 mins on malwarebytes - ??), I’d rather install Ubuntu or Linux to let them crack stuff and learn. I did the same on DOS when I was a kid. Any thoughts on how to do this safely?

What all happens when an item is scanned at the grocery store?
Hello, I hope this is the right place to post this, but the other day I was buying an item as the local grocery store (Giant Eagle in my case) and I started to wonder about how much data gets sent around when a single cashier scans an item. I'm sure data gets sent to all sorts of databases, the manufactor's, the grocer's, marketer's, ect.
If anyone has experience working behind the scenes of one of these big players (Giant Eagle, Wal-Mart, Target, Publix, ect) that could shed some knowledge on this area or point me in the direction to read more about this topic, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :)

Question about power banks for future project
I'm looking for a slim, small power bank that can fit on a wallet (ideally as close to the size of a credit card as posible) and it should be able to support USB-C charger (either built in USB-C or that I can connect one). The charging capacity isn't that important, I know it's not gonna be much battery anyways. I'm planning on making a leather wallet with a small power bank built in but I'm struggling to find a power bank that meets my requirements. If anyone knows any power bank with these characteristics please tell me, that'd be awsome.

Ultrabook for around £600
I'm wanting an ultrabook for around this price range. Obviously being thin and light are important but a decent processor and ram is also important as I intend to hook it up to a monitor and play games on it when I am not out and about. Not sure how realistic I'm being since the best option I can currently find is the Lenovo 720s and that's £760ish. Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated. And for any not in the UK most prices in the US are pretty much the same in the UK despite the conversion - maybe knock off $100 but that's it

OraSaifu - hardware wallet?
I've been getting a ton of advertising for OraSaifu recently. From what I can see it seems to be (another) attempt at hardware for unifying payment methods as an all-in-one NFC wallet. I'm certainly curious but the intensity of the advertising and lack of actual discussion online makes me wonder if it's yet another thing that's too good to be true.
Anyone have insight/experience with this sort of thing?

Gtx vs Quadro
So I am trying to help a buddy build/buy a laptop for college. He needs something to handle solidworks and cad but he has always wanted to PC game. With current gtx card prices now with 11 series on the way seem like a decent option. But I am not sure how well they can preform for his school environment. But at the same time a Quadro would work great for his school but gaming seems rough on it. He also has a pretty tight budget so a 1070 would probably be the best he could afford on the gtx spectrum and a Quadro p1000 or m1000m. Any insight or recommends? I am not to familiar with Quadros.
Thanks!

Your thoughts?
So normally I don’t ever keep a screen protector on my iPhone 8 plus mainly due to the fact that A: I never drop my phone face first, but if I do it’s usually from like an inch to 4 inches. B: I normally don’t really believe in them even though I have one.
Long story short: should I keep it on? Or take off the screen protector?

Samsung S8 vs S9
Hi! Curious if people think it would be worth to splash an additional 80 euros (around 100 dollars) on the s9 over the s8? I'm pretty sure they are almost identical with small changes such as the camera and processor and fingerprint location.
Any suggestions would be very useful!
I'm on a somewhat of a budget but if manage the 80 euro difference - just more curious about whether it's worth it.
Thanks

XPS 15 AUDIO PROBLEM
Okay so to catch everyone reading this up to speed, I have a xps 15 9560 and the speakers were working fine ever since I got it 5 months ago. However just today, the speaker, all of a sudden, just did not work whatsoever. I tried to restart my computer, but that did not help at all! is there something I can do ? I'm thinking about doing a factory reset if nothing can be done about this.

Can anyone explain to me why my iPhone 8+ ONLY starts to lag when a new update conveniently gets released?
It tends to freeze up iMessage primarily, but also affects any app's scrolling and typing. This happens EVERY TIME a software update gets released from Apple.
What gives? Very annoying.
If this is the wrong community to ask this question, feel free to redirect me.

Impact & Understanding of (Nvidia’s) Denoiser on the Movie Industry
Hey Reddit,
I recently saw a few article about Denoisers (-> e.g Nvidia Denoiser in OptiX, or the V-Ray Denoiser [1], [2], [3]), and I am super impressed by the technology and would love to learn more about it.
I am especially interested in where it can be applied, which devices you need for it, and its impact on the film industry. For instance, does drastically reduced render-times mean we can expect shorter time-periods between high-quality movies? 😃
Would be cool if you could help me in my search for answers. Plus, please be a little forgiving, I’m not too deep into the technical material :S (just some dude who is generally impressed by it)
Here are my thoughts:
-
Is the Denoiser ‘only’ good enough for previews (-> fast work iterations), or is it also used in the final render pass of the movie? (which output we see in the cinema)
-
If it would be good enough for the final pass, does that imply the movie industry can produce their animated films much faster now? And thus, we should expect more animated movies coming out soon? (looking at you @ Pixar 😃)
-
Do we need a GPU do use the Denoiser, or does it work with CPUs as well? I suspect it is neural-network inference, and thus should work on both devices? (if not: please provide some details)
-
Does the Denoiser work on ‘all’ render scenes that use path tracing ( ray tracing and/or radiance)? Moreover, which segments does this include? (Animation movies? Action film? GCI? Cartoons? Anime?)
-
Do all modern render-engines have their own Denoiser? If so: Which one would you say is currently the state-of-the-art?
Thanks a lot ! L0drik-

What's The Feasibility Of A Personalized Startup Tech Newsletter?
A major problem that I feel needs a solution is how the pace of technology is accelerating far past the rate of startup adoption. For example, new innovations in industries such as AI, Cloud Computing, SaaS are evident but only after time do these tools/technologies get adopted on a wide scale by low-resource, early stage startups. This is because of the countless number of options that these startups have and how they might feel overwhelmed and just stick with what's popular.
A humble approach I want to take to promote discovering startup technology is to create a personalized startup newsletter where early stage tech startup founders can fill out a form on my website about their size, startup stage, and tech interests in regards to what their startup is doing ( e.g., machine learning, virtual reality or blockchain) in order to be suggested about 3 free, low-cost tools once or twice a month that would matter to them (picked by relevance). I plan on serving as a free outlet for business targeting startups to reach their target startup audiences. For example, a SaaS startup with a novel project management tool would be able select the type of startups they feel they can help most and if I feel confident about their offering, I will add their product to the newsletter.
Tell me what you guys think, if this is needed, and what expectations you have for a product like this...

What is GAN, the AI technique that makes computers creative?
Moments of epiphany tend to come in the unlikeliest of circumstances. For Ian Goodfellow, PhD in machine learning, it came while discussing artificial intelligence with friends at a Montreal pub one late night in 2014. What came out of that fateful meeting was “generative adversarial network” or (GAN), an innovation that AI experts have described as the “coolest idea in deep learning in the last 20 years.”
Goodfellow’s friends were discussing how to use AI to create photos that looked realistic. The problem they faced was that current AI techniques and architectures, deep learning algorithms and deep neural networks, are good at classifying images, but not very good at creating new ones... https://bdtechtalks.com/2018/05/28/generative-adversarial-networks-artificial-intelligence-ian-goodfellow/

Can i take an item from the trash at the store i work in?
Hello, this is really important. While taking out empty boxes today at work to the trash, i noticed that a bunch of items were thrown away because they didnt sell. It was a rather small box with some phone cases, protective glass covers for cellphones, and an item that caught my eye instantly. It was an armband for your cellphone that locked it in place to help you carry it while you run. As i run everyday, this is really good. It costs 24.99 euros and i cant afford it. Im only an intern there for a month every year cause of school, and i was there a month last year. Where it is located, there are no security cameras so im planning take it out of its box, either wear ir all day beneath my clothes or put it inside my Tupperware that i bring inside a sack that's inside my back pack. While passing security, She only checks our bags (its not even her that searches, we are the ones that open it and show it to her) and it shouldn't beep while i leave the store cause its out of the box and its made of lether and plastic right? The items are going to be destroyed and trashed, is it that bad to take just one? Could i get into serious trouble it i get caught? Could i get fired even?
Is this the right subreddit aswell? Should i post this on r/legaladvice ( i think that's how its called)
