block all websites but 3 for 32 students logged into google accounts on chromebooks

i am a teacher in the hood and i have a real problem.

they have chromebooks to use in class so they can complete their weekly required work on this specific website. they are required to log on-task 45 mins per week on this website.

its my job to make sure they achieve this and it usually takes about 3 hours to achieve this bc they are relentlessly off task

thats 2.25 wasted hours that i could use to cover other material that im also responsible for

i need to be able to block all websites besides this one or 2 websites so that they will not have any distractions and complete this work in a timely manner.

i found an extension called block site and better yet, white list manager that will do this however i think they may eventually figure out how to turn it off.

is there anything that does this but with a password that would be needed to turn it off?

they log into chrome also so i also would need them to log in and then pass me the chromebook so i could install the extension and this will definitely be an issue.

they will know something is up and try to prevent me from doing this. it will be a whole big thing where i’d need to get administration involved and id rather not need to do that.

id just absolutely love for their favorite websites/distractions to be conveniently blocked at my discretion

does anyone know of a way for me to acheive my goal and perhaps conveniently be able to turn it off and on from a separate computer?

i will not get access to their google passwords as far as i know and even if i did, it would be pretty time comsuming for me to log into 32 accounts each day to turn it off and on

thank you in advance if you can help me id really appreciate it

I feel like the American technology is falling far behind other countries, not in terms of research necessarily, but in our daily lives (public transit, vending machines, even toilets). Why?

I'm not really a tech person, but this has been bothering me since I was a kid; even before I was out of middle school it wasn't hard to tell that even the way we handle our homeless population and basic recycling paled in comparison to other countries, but as an adult it's growing irksome. Looking at Japanese train stations and financial infrastructure—even their toilet seats, for goodness sake—makes me wonder where we went wrong, how we fell so far behind. Are the 1% to blame for hoarding the wealth, or is it our willingness to settle for less as a whole??

I'd love to hear a few thoughtful takes on the matter!

AR/VR... Hype or solid carreer choice?

If i search indeed.com for "virtual reality": 81 jobs, if i search for ".net": 6700 jobs... I'm tempted to specialise in VR in my final year of applied computer science but I'm starting to think it would be a stupid decision.

I may have given my computer a battery memory

Idk if this is the right place for this

Is there a way to fix a battery memory? My computer dies an hour after I unplug the charger. It's a recent HP so I could get another battery but I want to save that as a last resort. Any suggestions?

I have an outbuilding i’d like to run a phone line connector from the socket so I can have my modem/router in the outbuilding, some 25 meters away. I’m looking at getting a premade cat6 ethernet cable external, with RJ11 plugs.

Will the Sound BlasterX G6 work with the ps4 slim?

So I'm thinking about buying Sound BlasterX G6, but I'm not sure if it will work with my ps4 slim. Because the ps4 slim doesn't have an optical out port. Does the G6 require that or is it enough with just a usb port? Will it work, and if it does will the audio quality be any worse by just using the usb rather than using an optical out port?

What made me uncertain was the specs I found on this website: https://support.creative.com/kb/ShowArticle.aspx?sid=200065&c

If you scroll down to the system requirements for the ps4, it says: "Available Optical Out port (for Dolby Digital decoding) "

I have heard that you need to choose the Dolby variant in the ps4 audio settings to get the best experience from a soundcard, but without a optical out port that option is not available.

So basically, will the G6 work as well as it can by just using a usb port, or do I need an optical out port?

singularity of tech. can we expect more?

in the last few days i was watching the latest tech giant (Samsung) unveil their new phones and mobile gadgets and i just couldn't think about any else but the sad truth that mobile technology is at its peak , but rather in an unpleasant way.

each mobile phone out there is a black box with a touch screen and it can do (almost) everything we came to expect from a mobile device . a large lithium battery and some camera futures that are niche or gimmick but nothing that relay makes your inner child aw . as i see it just like laptops and personal computers did few years ago. all of the large companies are relay in a slow walk to singularity. some try to create a better walled garden like apple or Samsung and some try to invest in better cloud computing services (Microsoft, amazon etc) but it all seems to bleak in my opinion, and the truth is i have not found an interesting research or any thing that can be implied to personal smarter devices that actually makes a tech leap in any direction. (folding tablets i can put in my pockets are not the thing).

do you feel the same? can we expect a leap of sorts now days? maybe its the narrowing of imagination of engineers working days and nights on debugging rather than on dreaming what can be built and made that makes life better?

would love to hear your ideas and maybe contradictions to these thoughts.

Instagram alternative

I'm just reading the WSJ Article that came out today about FB collecting data from 3rd party app... blah blah blah privacy concerns...blah blah blah ...

.... Anyways I don't use Facebook anymore for a variety of personal reasons, but still like and use Instagram, thought I'm trying to limit my usage a bit and would rather not have a FB developed app on my phone.

I was wondering if it would be possible for a 3rd party to develop a "Instagram viewer" app that would allow me to view Instagram on my phone but not have to log in (maybe?) or maybe just with less/limited data being shared with FB? (kinda like viewing Instagram from desktop)

Just an idea and I was curious if this is or could be a thing?

Why Aren't Throat Mics Available?

Many many years ago I learned about the throat microphones Navy Seals use to speak to each other silently. Basically a sensitive short range mic touching your neck that picks up a whisper and amplifies it for the other side.

I thought for sure they'd appear at the consumer level. The tech available to clarify and tweak speech is well beyond what we need. Does anyone know more about this being in dev anywhere? Very necessary tech.

It has unfortunately become too common for people to speak on their airpods(etc) everywhere they go regardless of their surroundings. Seems like an awesome and perfect solution to this, among many other uses.

I has a beige / light brown background, nice typography, and the most distincitve feature are these "bubbles" or colored circles in a cluster in the upper left and in the footer.

When you hover over the bubbles they turn different colors.

Does anyone here know the name of this site of the top of their head? Thanks!

Appalachians have surprisingly sophisticated reasons for rejecting technology

Provocative interview of Dr. Sherry Hamby on why Appalachians have such a different relationship with technology than the rest of the country. Stereotypes that they just "can't afford" the new phone are staggeringly incomplete.

Pc Problem

Around a week ago I was playing games on my computer when it suddenly turned off. Wouldn't turn bavk on and was bad smell from psu. I bought a new PSU and this time the pc turned on. All the lights was on and fans were spinning. But when I plugged in HDMI cable there was no video output. I though it could be a gpu fault so I took it out and tried the integrated but still no hope. I also noticed the usb ports had power because they can charge my phone but when you plug the mouse and keyboard they dont light up. Also, the CPU cooler sounds louder the usual. Any suggestions?

Panic button that sends sms?

Hey all, does anyone know of any tech that can send an sms alert in case of panic? My mum has fallen recently and couldn’t alert anyone, so am looking for a pendant or something small that she could wear all the time and when pressed would send a text message to predefined number(s).

Ideally something with a SIM card, not connected to a phone, so it would be independent. Any help appreciated.

Amazon's New York sayonara is a big loss for progressives

President Trump is not the only politico to be handed his ass on a platter this week. Amazon's decision to take its 25,000 jobs and stomp out of New York City because it just didn't want the tsuris is also a major loss for Democratic revolutionaries and progressives. Yes, New York did give the company too big a tax break and, yes, it would have driven up costs for some middle income people although it would have provided better paying jobs for many others. The problem with being young and filled with revolutionary fervor is you want it all and you want it now. How you get from here to there is often lost in translation.

Donald Trump's dismal record of real accomplishments should be a cautionary warning to those, on both the left and the right, who think they can get their way by sheer brute force. After two years of Trump, Obamacare is still alive, North Korea is still building nukes, Russia is messing with us more than ever, Iran is still abiding by the nuclear deal, not one foot of new Wall has been built, Mexico has sent no money, undocumented immigrants still commit crimes at a lower rate than Americans, illegal immigration is at historic lows, the big tax break had little or no benefit to working class people, not a single new bridge or highway has been built, and prescription drugs are still at obscene levels.

The Republicans are going to run in 2020 against Alexandria Octavio-Cortez, a passionate young woman who has been in office for a couple of months and won't be eligible to run for another seven years anyway. Let's not let them. I'm hoping Joe Biden is the nominee not just because he is a decent man but because he takes away the GOP extremist argument. I would be happy with Kamala, Beto or Corey as heir apparent.

Need help finding the right flash drive

I'm looking for a flash drive that barely sticks out of the computer so I can leave it plugged into my crappy little netbook and slip it in and out of my bag without bothering to remove it every time. Kind of like the same profile that the USB part of a wireless mouse has. Does anyone know if such a thing exists and if so where to find one? Searching Amazon, I found a lot of USB drives that are very *thin*, but they're still long, which defeats my purpose.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Same blocked contacts as my friend by coincidence? Im freaked out

So I gotta know if anyone else has experienced this before, because I’m honestly a little freaked out about this!

Earlier today I checked my blocked contacts on my IPhone and found a lot of numbers I couldn’t recognized, so I looked them up online, most of them being private numbers and untraceable, however one showed up as being the phone number of a supermarket in a small town that my friend used to work at a few years before we got to know each other. Now there’s no way I’d blocked that phone number, so I texted my friend and asked her to check whether she had that number blocked as well. Turns out she did. I then asked her to list me the other numbers she had blocked, and all of them were the same as mine! Basically all of our blocked contacts were the same, except from a few phone numbers we had in our separate phone books.

Now she has never logged into her iCloud account from my phone or vice versa, so how in the world did this happen?! As I said, I’m kinda freaked out, so I’m hoping anybody’s got an answer.

We're the developers of Newscoop, an app that summarizes the latest events in tech and only shows articles from the last 48 hours

My cofounder and I have always noticed ourselves not reading enough news despite being interested in what the tech world has been up to. For us, the reason was simply because we didn't want to read a massive article - we also just didn't have the time to do it. To solve our own problems, we created Newscoop - AVAILABLE ON ANDROID ONLY - SORRY!

In short, this is what we do:

  1. We present a summarized version of all tech news - that means you only get the information you really need
  2. All news on the app is available for 48 hours, after which it disappears - you'll never be reading outdated articles, ever
  3. We categorize our news much better than a typical newspaper or even sites like tech crunch
  4. The interface is very similar to a social media app - it's familiar and easy to use

So, we'd love for you to try our app and tell us what you think! If it's something you'll keep, tell us what you find good about it! If it's something that doesn't provide much value, tell us why and hopefully we can make it better using your feedback.

All feedback is welcome through comments here or through reviews on the app.

Thanks Reddit!

ACER - NO BOOTABLE DISK FOUND HELP

In need of help/what my options are... the computer is just only a year old and cost me nearly 1.1k.... On top of this, my midterms are next week & I make music as a hobby.. I've lost so much money in ' drum kits, samples' and days of hard/creative work. This is very saddening

I googled how to fix this and all were saying to press the F2 key, the delete key and going into the system bios.. However, that's not working and it's not letting me do that. I can turn it on and all that comes up is a black screen followed by the no bootable disk message

Yesterday I made the mistake of downloading a dolphin emulator to give it a try. at the time my computer logged out, I was simply streaming a show from an actual safe source, on top of having a couple chrome tabs opened.. I don't think this should have happened for the specs of an acer swift 3 and the circumstances

I'm not an expert, I need to know what I can do.. I can't afford going to a repair shop or buying any expensive pieces because I can't even afford groceries atm

Is it totally fucked or is there something that can be done?

Wasn't sure where to post this as I'm still working on it but wanted to put it out there to get any useful feedback or thoughts from the experts. It's basically a game similar to 20 Questions (or Animal, Vegetable, Mineral) that attempts to ask you questions to work out an object you are thinking about. You can think of everyday items (animals, household objects, food, quite a bit of other stuff etc) and it has 30 questions to try and guess the item. I've been working on it for a while but not sure what to do next so interested to hear anyone's thoughts...

Need help with Facebook event privacy

I go to a lot of concerts and I regularly click the *Going feature for whatever event shows up on my wall that I plan to attend. Usually this works out great because other pals of mine will show mutual interest in the event and we can plan together on meeting up. However, I really do not like the fact that many of my family members get to see what events I attend. I recently got a comment from my mom expressing her disapproval for certain events I would be attending. That was not at all appreciated by myself or my friends. There has been other instances as well where people can see what I'm up to but I do not know how to set my event privacy so certain people do not see where I'm going. Can anyone help me with this ?

MAG24C VS MAG241C

The 241c is currently $50 cheaper than the 24c, which is sort of weird, considering its newer?

I already bought the 24c because i thought it was better, matter of fact, im typing this on it now and i can say its been amazing. No dead pixels or any sort of issues. Only con is that you need to press the goddamn joystick or whatever SOO hard for it to register.

Im looking to return the 24c for the 241c because it has a 300cm/d as opposed to the 250 on the 24c.

Question is, whats the main difference? Im super confused as to why the older model is more expensive than the newer "better upgraded" one? Is it worth returning and buying the 241c? I use the DP cable and connect it to my RTX 2060.

I need help deciding. Thanks in advance!

Google is spooky as fuck.

So - I've got a bit of a cold. My ears are all stuffed up and I was having trouble hearing well out of one of them. I was casually bitching about this to a friend who was at my house. He said he had something that helps clear it up (basically just ear drops and a rinse,) and that he would bring it the next time he came over. Cool.

Fast forward a few hours later - I open YouTube, and there's a huge ad that reads, "Pain or pressure in your ear? You may benefit from Eustachian tube balloon dilatation. Click to request an appointment." Like, what the fuck? I've noticed ads about things that I've talked about, but never searched before*,* but I always thought, "well, maybe I searched something similar and just forgot about it," or "maybe my brain is just finding patterns where there really aren't any." This is the first case where I can be absolutely positive that I've never searched for this product, or even anything in relation to this product. It's so odd.

I was bitching about pressure in my ear to a friend in the morning, and in the afternoon there are ads on my computer about relieving ear pressure. So - naturally I was creeped out. I figured the only way this information could've been collected was through my phone, so I went to the privacy settings in my phone, feeling like I'm being a little paranoid and schizophrenic... And viola - click on microphone settings under privacy on my iPhone and the YouTube app has requested access to the microphone, with the setting labelled "allowed." So Google is listening to people's conversations through the microphone on their cell phone? (Presumably, only if you have the YouTube/Google apps installed...) Then they're tailoring adds on Google sites on your PC based on conversations you had in the real world when you didn't know you were being listened to? By clandestinely eavesdropping through your phone microphone, without your knowledge? I'm sure that you implicitly agree to such invasions of privacy by downloading the app - it's probably in the fine print that no one reads. It makes you wonder what other companies are doing the same thing.

Like, that's spooky as fuck, right? Everyone sort of dismisses it, or says they have enough services that mine data.

I would have probably said something similar. Or I would've said that one is more likely to notice an ad about something that they've talked about recently. But:

I have never searched for a solution to this problem before, as I have never had trouble hearing from pressure in my ear before. I mentioned it in an offhand manner to a friend. A few hours later, there are ads for a product that relieves ear pressure on my PC. I've never searched for a product that relieves ear pressure. I've never searched "ear pressure." I've never searched anything related to this. Then - to find a Google product has requested access to my phone microphone - and is the only app to do so except for an app that I use as a guitar tuner... When there's this much smoke, there's probably fire.

As I said, it's happened before - but this is the only time I can be certain that I've never searched for anything remotely similar to this product. It would be as though you were hanging out with a friend and said, "I wish I knew how to play guitar," without having ever thought that you might like to play guitar before. You've never searched "how to play guitar," or typed "best guitars," or anything of the sort. It just occurred to you, maybe it would be cool to learn how to play guitar. And then, a few hours later, you get an ad that says, "Learn to play guitar!"

And upon looking into it, it's not really a big secret. Companies like Alphonso monitor which TV shows you watch by listening through your phone microphone. Apparently, it's a pretty common thing.

https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/news/smartphone-apps-listening-privacy-alphonso-shazam-advertising-pool-3d-honey-quest-a8139451.html

https://alphonso.tv/for-app-developers/

Here's the company that does it. Now - why would they limit the data collection to just TV shows? It doesn't make sense from a business prospective. They say that it doesn't recognize human conversations - but I mean, I think you'd have to be fairly naive to believe that. As far as I know, there's no regulation or law against collecting information in this manner, as you consent to it by downloading the app (even if you don't know it.) It's not as though Google doesn't have voice recognition software...

Google may have products, but the users are the main product. They sell user information to advertisers - the better, more accurate the information, the more appealing they are to advertisers. It's the same story with Facebook and other social media companies. Everyone is pretty well aware of this. It's the reason that so much of the internet is free.

Just try it: download the YouTube app on your phone, make sure it has access to your microphone and that your privacy settings allow the collection of data, and talk about one topic (that you wouldn't normally talk about) for a little while. Make sure you're signed in to the YouTube app with your account. Then get on YouTube on your PC, keep an eye out for the next couple of days, and before too long you'll find ads for whatever it was that you were talking about, as long as the subject isn't too esoteric. (But make it reasonably esoteric so as to be sure that is probably isn't coincidence, and be sure to talk about something that you haven't searched, etc.)

It seems a little conspiratorial, and I would've probably dismissed it - but I think the chances that Google is doing this is pretty high. It could be a coincidence - but you have to admit, that's a fairly unlikely coincidence. How many ads for relieving ear pressure have you gotten over the past year?...

I'm not knockin' Google. I've got money invested in Google - I hope they do well. But a little bit more transparency on this issue, and issues like these, would be appreciated...

HDD Question

I am currently using a 1 Terabyte HDD (Hard Disk Drive) manufactured by WD (Western Digital) and don't get me wrong, HDDs are great, especially when in large storage space, HDD are even better than a regular SSD in some instances depending on what activity you are performing. One thing that a SSD has over a HDD though is game performance, before the SSD started playing a major role in the gaming scene, the big question was about what CPU, GPU, and Memory you're using. Now I understand that this still matters and plays a major part in game performance but so doesn't your drive with it's R-W (read/write) speeds.

I currently have a powerful PC for running games, but one major downfall is that I am using a HDD instead of a SSD. I play games that also use variable maps depending on the server, meaning that your drive has to download, load, compress, decompress, and perform a ton of actions just to load into a server. This is very stressful on a HDD, and a SSD using a NAND Flash instead of a physical disk means it can perform these actions at double, triple, and sometimes quadruple speeds. I play a game called Rust and loading speeds on a HDD are horrendous, now this can take up to 15-20 minutes sometimes, but common statement is to use a SSD because you can usually load in within 30 seconds - 2 minutes.

Now my issue is that I am only 16, hopefully going to get a job soon so I can afford a SSD, but in the meantime I am broke and I can not afford a SSD, I was wondering are there any ways I can give my PC a boost in helping the HDD process events faster that way I can load into my games quicker.

I know how a lot of common drives work, most common being Disk, and NAND Flash. One piece of hardware we all end up using once in our lives is a device that is essentially a tiny/miniature SSD, you can find these by the name of a Flash Drive, Thumb Drive, "USB", USB Drive. These all mean the same thing, the technical name for these are Flash Drives, this is because they mainly run off of a NAND Flash, and that's where everything is computed.

Now knowing this I attempted to throw Rust into a folder on my Flash Drive. I plugged my Flash Drive into the most common and powerful USB interface today USB 3.0 , and tried to load it up, surprisingly it ran so much better... in some areas, now I knew this would happen but I was hoping that the areas I needed to be quicker were not poorly affected, unfortunately I expected them to be poorly affected. The few things that did load quicker were textures, response time, and a few other minor things. So while it improves some areas, it eradicates others and most of this is due to USB capabilities. The drives we use today are commonly using the SATA (Serial AT Attachment) interface or PCIe (PCI Express)interface and this is what allows us to reach extremely fast Read and Write speeds.

I realize I went into depth a bit and it wasn't really necessary but I thought I would provide my current knowledge and explain what I have/haven't tried so far. I was wondering if there's anything I could do to speed up my HDDs Read and Write speeds and give it even a minor boost. I have already given it a minor boost with increasing the Virtual Memory. I am also using a spare Flash Drive with Windows ReadyBoost even though this won't help much.

Simply Put - How can I speed up my HDD and give it a minor-tremendous boost.

Is there some sort of extra device the EHD has to go through to be played on the tv? I dont want to leave my laptop down there all the time, but I want to leave the drive there for access anytime. Wanting to learn

I am wanting to learn how to make an app or software, but I don’t want to go back to school for it. Are there any courses online? Any suggestions?

I need help on how to use Zoom!

I have an upcoming interview that will be done via Zoom, and for some reason it won't let me use my computer audio. When I join the meeting and it displays the join audio tab, there are only two options: phone call or call me. Can anyone tell me why that is?

The second issue I'm having: When I try to connect via phone, the call disconnects after I type in the meeting ID. I hear an automated voice saying something like "your call..." but it gets disrupted halfway and the call gets disconnected. Is it because I cannot join a meeting without a host, or is it something else? Thank you!

PS: I'm calling from Malaysia, if that matters.

All-in-One messaging app/interface for business - What do you use?

Right now we have a "No Texting" policy for discussing business, but of course employees do it anyway. Because of this, I am researching ways to streamline our business communications, especially with IM apps.

I would need any application or interface to do the following:

  1. Ability to combine SMS, MMS, WhatsApp, FB Messenger, Hangout, and potentially Jabber into one interface
  2. Create logs (date, time, and sender ID; message deleted)
  3. Ideally be able to backup specific business communications
  4. Encryption (?)

What type of message apps or interface do you use for aggregating mobile data? What are its strengths and weaknesses?

Any advice is appreciated and very welcome!

Personal cloud storage

Looking for a way I can store files and access them from my phone or anything else. Mostly for pictures but also any other personal files like medical records, bills, receipts, etc. Do I buy an external hard drive or is there a specific stand alone device that I can use that doesn't require a computer to be connected to it? I guess I'm looking for a personal cloud storage unit or something like that... Sorry I haven't been keeping up with the tech in the last decade. Thank you!

Question about video metadata

So I have a .mov file on my computer that I downloaded from an email. I need to send this file to someone but I’m wondering if there can be any link back to me if I do do that?

Not a big tech guy but I know metadata is associated with some files. Just not to what extent.

So bottom line, if I saved a video from an email to my hard drive then sent that video to third party is it traceable back to my computer or me?

Thanks

Newbie asking about snipping live clips

Hi all, I'm not sure if I'm in the right spot for this, but was curious. I am a big sports fan and cut the cord a few years ago, so I stream all of my stuff on a tablet or laptop. I see a lot of people on Twitter who post highlights straight from games, even just as fans. Is there a free app or anything out there that I can download and start cutting clips from live sporting events?
