I know historically CISC and RISC were substantially different and had different pros and cons. Now it seems both have taken on characteristics of one another. But then again Apple’s A12 seems to be encroaching on laptop-level chip territory in terms of performance, even with far lower power requirements. So which is it? Is the ARM efficiency advantage almost solely theoretical, due to convergence between the two ISAs in functionality or is the A12 an example of ARM truly rivaling x86 performance?
