Sorry this application cannot run under a virtual machine?
Hi, does anyone know how to get maplestory to work on a pre 2015 macbook air without paying for parallels or using bootcamp? I tried using VBox, but whenever I tried opening the game I got the error
"Sorry, this application cannot run under a virtual machine" even after trying the registry edit solution.
Thanks

Are present high end phones stronger than the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360?
It has been 14 years since the release the playstation 3 and since then we have improved our tech. I've been wondering if current high end phones could play playstation 3 games better than the playstation 3, its obvious that phones are stronger than the playstation 2 and have been for a very long time. When i think of high end
If i had to guess i would say that phones are superior, my reasoning is because the Nintendo switch is stronger than the ps3 and costs about 300 dollars to produce, the note 10 + is about 40% smaller (without joycons) and costs 420$ (nice) to make. This could be because of the very detailed camera or screen this is a guess.

Suspicious Gmail Issues -- Possible for ex boyfriend to interfere with emails?
So I'm almost certain (for a variety of reasons) that a guy I was seeing at one point had hacked my phone (he's a senior software engineer at a major tech company).
I think he may have interfered with my ability to send and receive emails from another guy--we'll call this guy Billy. In one of my gmail accounts when I hover over Billy's email icon it reads ":mo" where his name would go above his email address, and in my other email account it reads ":ke" where his name would go above his email address. Billy's email address is the same in both of my accounts. I added Billy to my contacts to see if these weird letters appear there, and on both accounts the name fields are empty.
Is it possible that my ex blocked my ability to reply to Billy's email address on one of these accounts? What explains the ":mo" vs ":ke" difference? Is there anyway I can fix this? I really like Billy and want to make sure that he is getting my emails (the way he has responded in person would make it seem like he hasn't been)---if there is an issue, is there anyway I can fix this?
Any insight into this would be much appreciated!

Hey Redditors! I need your help for a Tech based project I'm working on!!!
Hey guys! I'm a college senior and I'm working on a project which is centered around internet call based interaction between people who ask for technical advice/expertise and who provide technical advice/expertise online, for free.
If you're willing, it'd mean so much to me if you had 5 mins to hear me out so I could ask you a few specific questions on how you ask queries and how you use this forum.
Key qualifier- strongly preferred if you've previously helped people by offering technical advice /experience. Thank you so much! PM or comment and I'll follow up :)
Question 1) What motivates you to help others?
Question 2) Are you satisfied with the current text based Q/A forums, can you explain your problem/ situation to the fullest to other users only by means of textual conversations?
Question 3) Can you feel empathy while you are helping / asking help from people in a text based conversation?
Question 4) Have you ever wanted a call interaction between you and the other person but couldn't, cause of privacy concerns?
PS - I'm no spammer or self promoter. I really need insights from people like you helping each other :)

Clue to identify spoofed/restricted phone numbers?
Is it possible/probable that when someone uses a spoof app that the app selects digits from within their phone and scrambles them into the number that shows up when they spoof you and that using a spoof-call unmasking app can give clues to who might have spoofed you? read on for details ...I have someone I used to know who I'm pretty sure periodically and irregularly spoofs a number and calls me. Their actual phone area code is from a remote small town in the southeast US (where he used to live). I use an app to "unmask" the number and periodically the number that is unmasked isn't his number, but from the same rural area code. If find that odd; too odd to attribute to randomness considering how many area codes the call could possibly have come from. Other times the area code is from other rural/small area codes in the southeast US proximal to where the person lives or has lived that I know she has friends in his contact list that are from those area codes. There is no pattern, and they aren't frequent. I'm thinking it's more than chance that the spoofed calls frequently show these area codes and not other area codes across the country because they originate from his phone and are scrambled. Thoughts?

In what ways will technological transhumanism enable humans to "transcend" defecation?
Humans are very intelligent animals, capable of complex thought, innovation and establishing, building and maintaining civilisations and advanced technology, amongst other things.
But, as you all know, humans still breathe, sleep, produce waste in a variety of manners and...defecate, much like most other mammals and other animal species etc. (Digestion is a complex operation which is undertaken via the digestive system and the process begins as soon as food is consumed or even just smelled. Defecation is the end of the complex process - a process which sees all sorts of important nutrients assimilated into the body and contributes to a variety of things like growth, energy, generation of blood, respiration, cerebral function etc)
In what ways do you think technological transhumanism will enable the species to "transcend" defecation? (Or do you think it's not important, not a priority?)
Thoughts?

Massive IoT and 5G: New technologies, new possibilities
Every technology has its strengths and weaknesses, and IoT is no exception. An IoT deployment isn’t for everyone, and for those for whom it is appropriate, adopting the right technology mix is less about trying to surf the huge wave of hype and more about balancing tradeoffs between different options. (I’ve written about making such tradeoffs before).
But even with all these caveats, I’m going to put a small toe ...Read more: https://www.icaninfotech.com/massive-iot-and-5g-new-technologies-new-possibilities/

Will we ever see a build-your-own-phone?
The current generation of smartphones now dwarf my laptop in terms of power and sophistication.
I love a good pc build. Will we ever see smartphones move in that direction?
It would be nice to fully customize the specs and case of the phone - plus this should theoretically bring upgrade costs down if we are just swapping out components.
I know that it can be dangerous to fiddle with the innards of new phones because of the batteries - if this is a safety concern, maybe there could be upgrade locations where trained technicians do the swap for you?
I personally love this idea.
Will this happen? If not, why not?

Slow projects, small fundraising dim Revolution Precrafted’s unicorn halo
Slow projects, small fundraising dim Revolution Precrafted’s unicorn halo
https://www.dealstreetasia.com/stories/revolution-precrafted-unicorn-halo-175880/
Manila-based Revolution Precrafted had what seemed like the trappings of a poster-boy startup – a charismatic founder, celebrity endorsements and the hallowed status of being the Philippines’ first unicorn.
But five years from inception, the company has yet to deliver on its promise of quick-to-build luxury homes in its home market, at least not at a rate that befits its towering valuation. Existing and external investors have also been hesitant to invest in the company during an unusually tiny fundraising round for what is supposed to be a billion-dollar business.
A unicorn’s tiny fundraising
Revolution burst onto the scene in 2015 with its grand vision of ultra-sleek and modern modular house designs, all of which would be prefabricated (prefab) homes designed by award-winning architects such as the late Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind and Philip Johnson.
Its chief executive and founder was Robbie Antonio, a photogenic and eloquent man who hung out with Hollywood stars and hails from the family behind Philippines-listed Century
Properties Group, Inc. Antonio told the South China Morning Post in 2018 that he wanted Revolution to be the “Ikea of homes,” creating residences that can be built in 60 to 90 days, instead of two years.
It was a dream that Antonio successfully pitched to investors. In October 2017, K2 Global, a Singapore-based venture capital firm, invested an undisclosed sum in the company, catapulting Revolution to stardom as the first tech unicorn out of the Philippines. (Disclosure: K2 Global was earlier an investor in DealStreetAsia. The VC firm exited this investment by selling its shares to Nikkei in April 2019.)
The halo did not last long. Sometime between 2017 and 2018, Revolution was back on the fundraising trail, approaching Southeast Asian venture capital (VC) firms such as Qiming Ventures and Openspace Ventures for funds.
In September 2018, Antonio told the audience at DealStreetAsia’s Asia PE-VC Summit that Revolution was considering raising $10 million in its Series C round the following year. “We will probably do a Series C next year when we have thousands of homes installed and reach more market than where we are right now.
That’s obviously part of the gameplan,” Antonio had said, hinting at the possibility of the firm hitting a $10-billion valuation mark in three to four years.
According to an email exchange seen by DealStreetAsia, Antonio was seeking as little as $1 million to $3 million at a $1.85 billion valuation for his business in 2017.
It is extremely rare for billion-dollar businesses to raise such small amounts given their presumed scale. At that investment size, a full equity deal of that nature would either give an investor a minuscule stake of just thousandths of a per cent in Revolution or imply that Antonio was taking a drastic haircut on the value of his own shares.
A prominent Indonesia-based VC said the firm did not respond to a fundraising pitch from Revolution in 2018 as unicorns would not be raising capital as low as $1 million. “I can create a $1 company and ask someone to invest another $1 in my company and give him 0.00000000001% of shares. Hence I can be a billionaire on paper,” explained a partner at this VC firm.
Qiming Ventures and Openspace Ventures are understood to have rejected the offer. Both declined to comment or verify those figures. K2 Global, which gave Revolution its unicorn status, is also understood to have declined to reinvest. According to an industry source, the VC firm had committed to a follow-on investment in 2018-19, but did not do so as it had ‘no visibility on the company.’
Revolution could not comment on the deal in time for publication. One source close to Revolution’s past fundraising efforts told DealStreetAsia that Antonio retains significant control over the company. Its other shareholders include 500 Startups, which joined its $15.4 million Series A in early 2017, and Filipino angels such as Xurpas co-founder and business tycoon Nix Nolledo.
The source added that Revolution’s valuation was based on multiples of future sales on the contracts signed rather than previously delivered projects. That explained the rapid rise of Revolution’s valuations, which spiked with every contract that Antonio signed.
Revolution was understood to already be valued at $128 million during its seed round with early investors. This doubled to $256 million during its Series A, joined by 500 Startups in early 2017. When K2 Global joined in October 2017, the unicorn’s horn was already showing.
While K2 had valued Revolution based on its order book, its investment is learnt to have come with full ratchet downside protection, which meant that if Revolution were to raise a “down” round in the future, K2 would receive additional shares in the company.
It is not unusual for investors to base valuations on future revenue projections during a startup’s early years. But showing proof of execution is crucial if the startup needs to successfully raise more capital further down the line.
Unfinished business
In March 2017, Revolution was reported by Tech in Asia to have booked $110 million in orders. After a flurry of deal announcements in 2018 in international markets ranging from the Middle East to the Caribbean, the company said it had bagged contracts worth over $7 billion.
In a 2018 interview with CNBC, Antonio said that he was only getting warmed up. “I’ve told my team I want to be in 25 different countries this year, 55 by next year, 85 in 2020 and possibly go public then.”
We reached out to several companies the Filipino firm announced deals with across the world, including Seven Tide in Dubai (a $3.2 billion deal for The World Islands), the KT Group in Myanmar (the $1.2 billion Okkyin project), Bahrain’s Property One Investment Company (a multi-million-dollar deal to supply residential villas) and BC Estudio in Spain (project to build 50 hotel villas in Catalonia). None of the companies we reached out to responded to our queries on project status.
In its home market at least, Revolution does not appear to be building homes at the pace that Antonio was pushing for. Industry observers shared with DealStreetAsia that orders for its Philippine units have not been brisk. These include Flavorscapes at Lakeshore, in Pampanga province; Revolution Hills in Rizal province; and Batulao Artscapes in Batangas, which is being developed with Century Properties.
When DealStreetAsia visited the Philippine projects, the sites looked incomplete and unoccupied. This seemed to be at odds with Antonio’s comments about erecting prefabricated homes in months rather than years.
At Flavorscapes Lakeshore, a $750 million project that officially broke ground more than a year ago in November 2018, there seemed to be little progress made on construction. We managed to visit the site despite being redirected a couple of times – first by a security guard at the showrooms to a homeowners’ association, then by the association to the sales team, which did not pick up the phone.
The 140-hectare site was originally envisioned to be a sprawling complex of residential and commercial buildings, with the beautiful lake of Lakeshore Pampanga as the central focus of community activity. Flavorscapes was to be the world’s first livable food park, with roughly 14,000 homes to be built onsite.
Instead, we found rows of derelict, bare-faced modular structures and not a single construction worker in sight. People on site told us that Central Country Estate (CCEI), the developer of the project, recently stopped sending sand and gravel to location.
Banners revealed plans for three types of units, named Nest, Alcove and Spaces. Only Nest units seemed to have been built so far.
A former Revolution employee told DealStreetAsia that technology and cost limitations made it difficult to reach the prefab ideals that Antonio had been pitching. “Robbie has always sold the image of prefab as something that can be easily assembled, like the ‘Simple’ home designed by Jean Nouvel. The assembly was completed in Paris in 48 hours,” the former employee said. “Those luxury pre-fab homes can be done, but not at Robbie’s price point.”
Not quite as planned
It is unclear if progress has been affected by slow construction, or possibly weak sales delaying project starts.
Former suppliers and employees told DealStreetAsia that Revolution was aggressive in driving down its costs by haggling. One supplier griped that payment was withheld on the premise of failing to deliver on time. Revolution would also try to barter by paying in kind in the form of homes, rather than in cash.
As a result, Revolution’s practices made it difficult for the company to maintain long relationships with suppliers and contractors. The sources added that it also affected the ability to uphold quality in the homes.
There are also questions about Antonio’s priorities. In May 2019, Antonio became the CEO and founder of Resident Holdings, which he describes in his Linkedin profile as the parent company of Revolution Precrafted and a host of other businesses including fintech, fashion and beauty retailing and medical and accounting services.
A presentation deck seen by DealStreetAsia showed that Resident Holdings has been pitching itself as an international dealer for a total of 26 Resident brands, including Revolution Precrafted, which remains its flagship product.
Whether Revolution is still the main focus, or whether it is now part of a new project, is unclear. DealStreetAsia has yet to receive responses from Revolution and Antonio on this matter.
This is a developing story.

What is the point of flip-phones?
As the title says, whats the point? I do not see how flip-phones are in any way beneficial even if the durability and strength of the devices improve. It just seems so impractical to me. Why would I want to have to open my phone to use it every time. The aspect ratio is terrible and I genuinely see no benefit to it, except it being a bit impressive from an engineering standpoint. Can someone explain why they are being made? What is their benefit? Are people just a bit bored of smartphones and want something new to talk about?

Currently, you can discover and use the following communities: Magic Leap, Lens Studio, Spark AR, ARKit, ARCore, HoloLens, Vuforia and WikiTude.
👤 Profile and portfolio. Our main goal is to help creators and companies to organize their AR/MR assets such as projects, articles and tutorials in one place. We have also attached an activity feed so other users can discover the recent activity of the creator. By using the ‘CONTACT’ button businesses are able to reach out to creators in terms of opportunities or collaboration.
📄 Pages for AR/MR projects. We did our best in terms of the development of quality pages to present Augmented and Mixed Reality projects properly. Here, you will find all the important information, such as project name, description, rating, related categories and communities, screenshots, videos and information about the creators. A small but very nice add-on is the ability to download mobile apps and effects for Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook, by scanning QR codes from your laptop/desktop screens.
📥 Submission and contributions. The ability to share AR/MR projects, tutorials and articles is possible through the simple submission form. Since Catchar is a community-based startup, any users can contribute and share the projects that they love. We also decided to release the ability to share projects with a different status, such as concepts, coming soon projects, finished projects and LIVE projects. Techradar: "The OnePlus 8 has disappointingly little RAM" - Can we please stop encouraging useless industry practices that only hinder the consumer?
Article here:
https://www.techradar.com/news/oneplus-8-leaked-with-disappointingly-little-ram-but-a-great-chipset
With phones getting more and more expensive, and flagship prices skyrocketing from the ~600$ of 10 years ago to the 1400$+ of today's high tier devices, instead of articles criticizing the (let's face it, unsustainable) trend of increasing prices to make up for stagnating sales of new smartphones, I keep seeing articles that praise the mighty specs of phones that cost double the average home computer, or that criticize the specs of already expensive phones that AT LEAST are still priced in the realm of affordability for the average middle class consumer. OnePlus started with a flagship killer that was priced at 300$ (which was lacking in many respects), nowadays their phones are 700$+ (and they are arguably better than devices that cost double that, thanks to good software and optimization). Instead of actually understanding what makes a "flagship killer", I see people arguing that OnePlus should just offer insane specs even if they are totally useless. 16GB of RAM on a phone are totally useless with today's Android software ecosystem, and 8GB is plenty for everyday use and it'd be in the interest of the average reader of Techradar (and other publications) if manufacturers stopped putting 8 cameras on a phone to justify insane prices, and just started selling budget flagships that have no expensive gimmicks but beefy specs to drive everyday performance, just like OnePlus has been doing for the last few years.
In short, please ignore articles glorifying insanely expensive tech if the cost is just driven by gimmicks. Try to be critical. 16GB of RAM is not too much or too little in an absolute sense, it just depends on what you're doing with them. Are you rendering scenes for the next pixar movie? Then 16GB is too little. Are you making calls and texting your friends on Whatsapp or Telegram, on an OS which will kill apps for battery/power saving reasons no matter how much RAM you have? Then 16GB is as much of a gimmick as having 16 cameras on the back for high end photography that still can't match a real DSLR..yes you could technically use them, but you really shouldn't and you'd be better spending your finite budget on something else.
Also spare me the "tech is going on and in X years 16GB will be the norm". Yes I get it. But tech shouldn't go faster than our wallets. Yes we could technically have a 128GB RAM phone, but what's the point if it's not sold at the price of a normal phone? The market can't keep up with these devices, so publications should just contextualize high prices for what they are and at least they shouldn't criticize budget options for not including extra features that would drive their prices up a lot.

Blue screen :(
Okay i need some help as I tried everything possible but nothing seems to be working in my favour.. I had problems with my WiFi and I read somewhere it would be a good idea to uninstall the device and reinstall it. So I did that everything was okay. After I reinstalled it I decided to restart my laptop. When I turned it back on I got the blue screen saying “your pc ran into a problem” bad_system_config_info..and so here I am 1 day later I tried everything that I could possibly do (fixing the windows registry with comes back with a access denied) fix boot configuration also comes back with nothing but a text that says what commands are available.. bcdedit commands also come back with some errors...system restore doesn’t work as well all my restore points are for some reason not available even tho I see them when I click on restore. I have a bootable usb with windows and this is my last chance but here is my question. What can I do to save my files? I just have a C: drive ( I know it’s ridiculous to just have one drive I know) I know that after this the C: will format and everything will vanish but is there something I can do :/ I know I can take the harddrive out and put it on a healthy machine to restore the files.. but The two little screws got striped and I can’t get em out without breaking the plastic so I’m fucked either way but just wanted to see if there is some other alternative that I haven’t tried. Thanks in advance

Not the big games, but like minecraft for example. My parents haven't said anything about a budget yet. What would be a good laptop for me and why? (I don't anything about pc's/laptops). All help is appreciated.

Does owning a Google home present any different privacy concerns than owning a Google phone?
I want to purchase a Google Home for recipe help, scheduling reminders and playing music but my partner feels it will "listen to us." My partner owns a Google smart phone and uses the "hey Google" feature regularly.
Can anyone tell me if there's any difference in terms of privacy? I don't want to go into the minutia of data breaching. I just want to know if the technology is more or less the same.
Thanks!

Is anyone else totally fed up with the state of current technology? Are you sick of things like disappearing delete keys, expensive electronic devices so slippery you can't hold on to them (that's called implementing planned obsolescence), and the rest of the garbage we pay such big money for?
I don't know what's wrong with the people manufacturing this junk but I'm fed up with it. Is this a total outlier opinion, or do other people think similarly?

Clearview AI, a threat to us all
I don't know how many people have heard of this but there is a startup called Clearview AI that has been taking billions of our photos off of social media and using it to train it's facial recognition software that can be used to track our every move.
One of the most concerning parts is that their CEO has previously made phishing applications and computer viruses that got him into legal trouble with the law. How can anyone trust him with the personal information of billions of people after that?
There have already been reports of their software used for stalking, and other reports of false arrests being made because of it. This makes me afraid of what is to come once it becomes more widely used around the world.
www.engadget.com/amp/2020/02/12/clearview-ai-police-surveillance-explained/
This is a huge threat to everyone's privacy, and I believe that in using private photos they have infringed on intellectual property rights by using photos that do not belong to them. Under copyright law the owner of the photos has exclusive rights to the photographs and Clearview AI was never given permission to use many of the photos that they have stolen.
Is there anything we can do to prevent this theft and to shut down this company before it's too late?
I refuse to play a role in the creation of a dystopian police state and I believe that the protection of our privacy is something everyone should be worried and speaking out about.
Thank you for everyone who has taken their time to read through this post, and I really hope that together we are able to do something about this terrible startup.

Live Location Technology?
I'm working this project where this retirement community has reached out to us to ask for our help with some of their residents that suffer dementia. They would want us to find some way to track patients who have dementia and tend to wander around at night. What we've been asked to do is to find a way to track these residents at night, but making the device we would give the residents discrete enough so they wouldn't want to take it off (for example, if its too big or bulky).
Is there any technology currently on the market we can use to track these residents? Since they wander at night, they likely will not have their phone on them. We looked at Fitbits (most residents wear Fitbits) but it seems like there is no way of tracking its live location. The key to this problem is that has to be some form of wearable (that would be comfortable enough to wear) that can be tracked remotely, if necessary. Any leads or help at all would be very much appreciated!

Is the surface go overpriced?
I've been looking to buy a tablet for college and I've been eyeing the Surface Go for a while but when you do the math upgrading to the 8gb/128gb model, adding the keyboard (and maybe a pen) the price get near $600 (even if you look for Amazon refurbished ones) at that price doesn't it make more sense to buy a full fledge laptop?
I wish so much that Microsoft would come out with a budget option for a W10 tablet/convertible like Apple did.

Is the A+ certification worth getting?
I've recently been told the cert is only impressive to "non-techies" and it actually means next to nothing in the tech world because it's easy to get (I disgaree, but that's irrelevant). Apparently, the only reason to get is to study, but studying can be done from a textbook. Not to mention that test costs money.
So, is it really worth taking the test and/or putting it on a resume? If it's that unimpressive, why bother at all? Why not skip to the certs that do mean something and just study the basics from an ordinary textbook? Seems that'd save someone a lot of time and money.

Tech Companies
Do you guys know about interesting tech-led companies that are willing to expand in the Middle East? An example would be NovuAir from Stockholm with its innovative approach to healthcare.

Switch from Mac to HP now that Mac is ruined?
So I spilled coffee on my MacBook Air and it won’t turn on. Looked online and repairs are $600-$800 so I figured I might just go with a new HP Envy x360 with the AMD5. Idk much about laptops but my professors are always recommending switching to something different than a MacBook for excel and other applications. Any advice or recommendations?
