Question regarding condenser mic on Xbox one
I have a question regarding condenser microphones / studio microphones on the Xbox one.
(Skip this part if you wish it’s just context) I recently had the idea of trying my pc microphone with my Xbox one so I didn’t have to use a crappy Kinect microphone. You may wonder why I don’t just buy a headset... that’s because I don’t like wearing headsets and much prefer using earphones.
My pc microphone is of high quality and clarity is perfect. I can’t find the specs of what my microphone is but it’s just a mid range microphone for 30/40 pound off amazon.
I bought an adapter for my Xbox controller so I could have a 3.5mm output - earphone and microphone jack therefore my microphone would connect and my earphones also from the controller. All works fine but the problem is the sensitivity on the microphone seems to be terrible when plugged into my controller and struggles to pick me up. I pretty much have to have my mouth touching the microphone and have to talk quite loud for it to sense my voice and show up in party.
Where as on my pc it’s perfectly fine picks me up no matter what. I gather that’s due to the sensitivity being set to +20db on the microphone on windows. But even so I remember when it wasn’t +20db it wasn’t exactly an issue or at least I didn’t have to have the mic in my mouth.
Please if anyone has any suggestions let me know or at least of any alternatives. Just want to be able to use a microphone on my Xbox rather than Kinect.
Don’t suggest the Xbox app on pc please because I would rather not have my pc having to be turned on at the same time as my console.
Bump up please, I need a resolve. If you need any pictures additionally let me know.

What did Cambridge Analytical do exactly? And why do people care about tech companies selling their data?
I told my girlfriend I was really pissed off at Facebook and Cambridge Analytical. When she asked me why I gave some half-assed answer about privacy and I realized I really didn't know what I was talking about.
I then asked a friend who works in Silicon Valley what he thinks. He told me "it's all blown out of proportion. Facebook, Google, Amazon -- they're all selling your data. If you're mad at Facebook, you should be mad at everyone."
So, Reddit, -- what exactly, in explicit terms, did Facebook do? What is data mining? Why do people care? And why is the census that Facebook dropped the ball with Cambridge Analytical?
Thanks!

Would it be possible to create a "blockchain" type video encryption that makes videos trackable as to if they've been altered?
The know how is beyond me, but I am vaguely familiar with Blockchain (dangerous, I know). But, it seems like there could be a similar blockchain type encryption set up on videos so that each video has it's own code, and if the video is altered, a time stamp and unique code would be added to the blockchain. Seems like this could help with being able to verify whether or not something is a legitimate, unaltered video or not.

Why do Western tech blogs constantly talk about Chinese smartphones, yet practically every other gadget made by Chinese companies is ignored?
No one talks about Chinese cars, no one talks about Chinese laptops (aside from Lenovo), it's always about smartphones (and occasionally TV's) as if that's all the country makes.

Should unrestricted access to the internet be a right or a privilege?
In the West, we're taught that it's our right to have un-restrictred access to the internet and that any form of rules or regulations online are a threat to democracy
– I don't agree.
We have to pass multiple exams to drive a car, we need qualifications for many jobs and in every city there are lots of rules and restrictions, like road rules, that help society function and keep us safe every day.
Online today we see the unintended consequences of completely free and unrestricted access to the internet. For example:
People with dementia being vulnerable to rip off deals Sex offenders can use dating apps unchecked There are no safety nets for people with online gaming addictions Young people routinely post content they later regret
I know that GDPR regulation is coming into play in Europe very soon and it addresses some of this stuff but isn't it time for implementing more practical ways to protect and equip people to be online, just like we've done for centuries in cities?

Headset jack too large for jack splitter/adpater
I have recently bought a Promate Valiant headset ( it uses usb and came with a jack splitter/adapter to connect to my pc) and I have spent a lot of time figuring out why the microphone didn’t work properly and the sound quality was bad. I have tried many methods and updated all my drivers, but I think I figured out what the problem was: my headset’s jack is ~1 mm too long for the hole in the splitter/adpater (the hole is 3.5 mm deep). I want to know if this is a reasonable hypothesis. I also want people that know about the Promate Vailant/own it help me figure out what im am doing wrong.

Profit Sharing Social Media Site/App?
I feel and believe that this is tech related, so I hope it's OK to post this idea here. Cheers!
I have a site/app idea.
Imagine an alternative that can replace Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Quora, Twitter, and Reddit.
You can pay a small fee each month to not see ads.
Since all monetized content is created by members/users, then 70% to 90% of net profits from advertising are rewarded back to users/members.
My idea is sort of like Steemit, but more.
Imagine a Netflix of social media.
Feel free to implement this idea. I'll consider being part of your team if you ask.
If you implement this idea, I'll probably use the site/app.
In my opinion, it is unethical to modernize user generated content and to keep all the profits. Perhaps minimum royalty laws should exist.

What kind of potential do Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)/drones hold for telecommunications?
I have been reading up a bit on UAVs and the various benefits that they do bring, but I have a question that has been nagging me that I hope you, the kind people of r/tech, would be able to answer.
Are there any ways that UAVs can improve/deteriorate our telecommunications? Are there ways in which UAVs can be utilised to contribute to the telecom sector?
Appreciate any opinions and would love to engage! Thanks!

What are actually good sites to read?
TheVerge is trash, and so are so so many others.
I really really used to like Lifehacker around 2014, but it's really gone down, even further than before. I currently just read subreddits(like say r/Android), and occasionally notebookcheck.com, GSMArena, and MakeUseOf(MUO is terrible actually, but a few articles are neat).
And subreddits and their comments can't exactly match to the speculation and guides on these other sites. The problem is honestly that technology journalism is, for the most part, terrible.

How do you guys navigate Hacker News?
Do you guys create a new tab for every interesting article you find and then upvote? or do you enter the new site, hit the back button and find more articles, one at a time?
I was just wondering b/c I see a lot of articles I am interested on this entire page but always end up only reading one or two because of how the website is structured.

Is it possible to make an automated phone voice
You know how companies have phone number which, if you call, will display an automated message, and then based on your answer or buttons pressed they give you a different message, usually these are used in company support systems. I wonder, is it possible for an everyday person to create such a thing?

looking into getting into programming/web development
not completely sure if I'm posting this in the correct subreddit, if so excuse me. however I am looking into getting into a tech/computer related field. I'm a construction worker currently looking to get into a new line of work and tech and pcs always fascinated me. I think programming and coding would be a great fit for me but I don't have any real experience and not sure where to begin. with that being said can anyone recommend a good starting point? I'm aware of codecademy/treehouse/udemy/coursea/code.org etc but between all those I still am not sure where a true begginer should start.

Audio on my tv
I own a tcl 55c807 and when I connect my speakers via headphone jack, all my audio from the tv goes to the speakers. Before this TCL tv I owned a VIZIO tv (don’t know the model) and both the audio of the TV and speakers would play after I’ve connected the headphone jack.
So my question is, how would I obtain BOTH audio out from my new TLC and speakers. I’ve missed with the setting on the TLC and no change. Would a digital out to jack give me dual audio? Or with it have the same result with single audio through my speakers

Are electronics designed to fail by the manufacturer?
How come the navigation system on my 2000 BMW still works flawlessly but something as stupidly simple as a Keurig machine dies after like 1.5 years? Some of these manufacturers seriously have to be designing their products to fail within a certain time frame in order to increase sales. Is there any other known stuff like this going on besides the recent Iphone nerfing controversy?
Edit: There's a term coined for this called "Planned obsolescence", Apparently it is a thing.

True Wireless Earbuds for Work (reposted)
Not sure if I should have picked a more specific subreddit, sorry if so.
I’m looking for suggestions for a “true wireless” set of earbuds.
I am a carpenter/construction worker. Usually I work alone and listen to audiobooks or podcasts pretty much all day. At the moment I use LG Bluetooth headphones (can’t remember specific model but you wear them like a necklace and the short wired earbuds pop out of there. The problem I have with this is that depending on the day or the work, the necklace part gets tangled with my clothes, falls off or gets hit by things I’m carrying. I figure if I minimize the wires and extra pieces I may have less physical interference.
From what I’ve read, the main limiting factor is battery life. Some days I work up to 10 hours. Even though I may not listen to 10 hours of an audiobook, it can still reach upwards of 8 hours on and off.
One specific detail is, I usually only use one earbud to at least be somewhat aware of my surroundings (noise cancelling might be a bad thing cuz of this.) I’m willing to just carry the other ear in my pocket if they don’t work while separated but my first thought was just a single ear piece. I’m not sure of the sound quality of the “old” Bluetooth earpieces meant for taking hands free phone calls and only that. Can you even listen to music on those things?
If anyone has suggestions as to something I may be interested in or can explain why I’m looking for something that doesn’t exist, please let me know.
Thanks
