Ping spikes when downloading / updating anything

Recently, about 2 weeks ago. My ping has been very unstable. Fluctuating like crazy. Recently learned it happens when something on my computer is download / updating something. Anyone know why and how I could fix this? Ping is normally 52 ish, and with downloads / updates it can go from 800-2500.

Will Reddit Use AI to Fight Fake News During Elections?

For years, I've been using Reddit. Love this site. Unfortunately, all community sites that get popular (especially during election year) have spammers or those who try to manipulate the community with misleading titles and content. Til now, most of the moderation was performed on the subforums. Nevertheless, finally seeing Reddit supermods take proactive action by removing titles and posts of spammers to keep this place awesome.

The big question: What are they going to do during election year to thwart the fake news, as I'm sure all the Russians/Chinese, etc., will be using advanced AI. Your thoughts?

Here are some examples:

Another steller response from gitlab

They rolled back the telemetry they had planned after seeing their users did not want this. After the steller (And incredibly transparent) response from gitlab durring the desiaster two years ago here is more from them

Dear GitLab users and customers,
On October 23, we sent an email entitled “Important Updates to our Terms of Service and Telemetry Services” announcing upcoming changes. Based on considerable feedback from our customers, users, and the broader community, we reversed course the next day and removed those changes before they went into effect. Further, GitLab will commit to not implementing telemetry in our products that sends usage data to a third-party product analytics service. This clearly struck a nerve with our community and I apologize for this mistake.
So, what happened? In an effort to improve our user experience, we decided to implement user behavior tracking with both first and third-party technology. Clearly, our evaluation and communication processes for rolling out a change like this were lacking and we need to improve those processes. But that’s not the main thing we did wrong.
Our main mistake was that we did not live up to our own core value of collaboration by including our users, contributors, and customers in the strategy discussion and, for that, I am truly sorry. It shouldn’t have surprised us that you have strong feelings about opt-in/opt-out decisions, first versus third-party tracking, data protection, security, deployment flexibility and many other topics, and we should have listened first.
So, where do we go from here? The first step is a retrospective that is happening on October 29 to document what went wrong. We are reaching out to customers who expressed concerns and collecting feedback from users and the wider community. We will put together a new proposal for improving the user experience and share it for feedback. We made a mistake by not collaborating, so now we will take as much time as needed to make sure we get this right. You can be part of the collaboration by posting comments in this issue: https://gitlab.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=195066e322642c622c0ecdde3&id=8c8ee4d0c6&e=e6e0d482f7. If you are a customer, you may also reach out to your GitLab representative if you have additional feedback.
I am glad you hold GitLab to a higher standard. If we are going to be transparent and collaborative, we need to do it consistently and learn from our mistakes.
Sincerely,
Sid Sijbrandij
Co-Founder and CEO
GitLab

Are there any tools that show you truly random websites?

So since the internet has become so over-saturated with tracking and "suggested" links it seems like the machine learning algorithms have completely beaten out any sense of random discovery on the internet.

A perfect example is youtube. All I get for suggested videos are topics, and sometimes even videos, that I've seen a million times before. Even the search results are highly curated to what youtube thinks will keep me on the site. I feel like its hard to discover something novel and new.

It's as if I'm in some kind of digital bubble that I can get out of. I'm inside the matrix.

I've done some searching for a webapp that will take me to random websites, like chat-roulette but for websites. But I haven't found anything. All the apps I've found either are broken or are "random useless websites"(the useless web), which isn't what I'm looking for.

I want to see what the internet really looks like. I want to discover something entirely new, not this filtered version of reality.

So are there any webapps that will take you to random registered domains?

If not, is there a master list someone of all registered domains? I could potentially make this app myself.

Help me please

So I got a new used phone (new for me but the phone is used) I have it set up and I put a password on it, but haven't used it really at all because i can just use the thumbprint for everything, and because I'm a dumbass i have forgotten my password and "Touch ID requires my password after iPhone restarts." I cannot get into my phone and have been locked out twice. There isn't anything important on there because I just got it, so I feel like the best option is to do a full reset but idk how to do that. I know you do it through iTunes but I do not have a macbook, however the pc i have does have itunes on it. Can anyone who knows anything about tech help me out, with some simple steps telling me how to factory reset? the sooner the better, thanks :)

If you have a mini smartphone museum tucked away in a drawer somewhere, it's time to put those phones to good use. There's no reason to hold onto the old slabs of plastic, glass, and silicon. You're way better off donating, selling, or repurposing them.

1 Home Security System

You don't have to drop tons of money for a simple home monitoring device. Just dig out an old smartphone, charge it up, and install a home surveillance app like Presence, Manything or AtHome Camera.

Just set up the old camera so that it's pointing in the direction of the area you'd like to monitor and, preferably, keep it plugged in so that you never really have to mess with it. These apps will send your main phone notifications when movement is detected, so you never have to worry about your home's safety while you're away.

2 Baby Monitor

To make this trick possible, you'll need two old smartphones or, preferably, one old one and your current device.

Download an app like Cloud Baby Monitor, Dormi or Baby Monitor 3G onto both of the devices.Make sure that the "baby monitor" device, which will stay in the little one's room, has its camera facing the nursery, close enough to see baby, but far away enough to get the full picture.Follow the instructions through your app of choice and be sure to set up the privacy settings so that only you can see the live stream of your child. Make sure your WiFi network that you'll be using is password protected.

3 Dash Cam

Plugging and unplugging, mounting and unmounting can be a pain. So if you have an old smartphone, make it your permanent dashcam by plugging it into a power source, mounting it and downloading an app like Autoboy Dash Cam.

4 WiFi Extender

It's definitely annoying when that one corner of your house gets no WiFi signal. To fix that, use an old smartphone as a WiFi extender. It's perfect for checking Facebook or sifting through emails, just don't expect to download huge files through this method.

Download the Netshare no-root tethering app onto your old device, which will be the extender, and your current device.Open the Netshare app on the first device that will be sharing WiFi and press "share internet connection."You'll be given a group SSID and password for the second device, which you'll use to connect.Accept the VPN pairing dialogue on the second device if you receive one and you're set!

5 GPS Tracker

Are you the type of person that constantly forgets where you've parked your car? Or maybe you're a worry wart and want to know that your car hasn't been stolen while you're away from it. Either way, using an old phone as a GPS tracker is a cheap option to give you some peace of mind.

Sure, it won't be as good as a dedicated GPS device since software running in the background will kill the battery fast, but you can use a portable charger to make the battery last a few days. Make sure you've turned on "Find my iPhone" or navigated through your Android device's settings and switched on tracking. Toss the phone into your trunk or glove compartment and you're ready to go!

6 Make Some Money

Selling your old smartphone doesn't have to be a pain and you don't have to constantly monitor eBay, anymore, either.

Amazon Trade-In might not get you the most bang for your buck, especially if you have a newer model phone, but it's definitely the easiest. look up the brand and model of your phone, print a free shipping label and wait.

If Amazon wants the phone and you're okay with the price, then you'll get an instant digital gift card. If you don't like the deal or Amazon rejects your phone, it'll send it back to you at no charge or you can choose to donate the phone for free. This is also a good option for old tablets and even books (plus other devices, like streaming sticks, which earn you a discount on new TV sets).

Moving away from the dark side... (Phone upgrade time)

I took out a new 24-month contract for an iPhone X back in 2018 with the option to upgrade after 12 months. When the iPhone XS was released and my upgrade came around, the lack of change from my device to the new release deterred me from upgrading.

A year later and I am now closing in on the end of my contract with a decision on the horizon - what phone do I upgrade to next?

I have been an iPhone user since the 4 and had gradually become less and less impressed with each upgrade. As a tech enthusiast, the unboxing and startup processes with a new device are some of my favourite moments, so as you can imagine the most recent iPhone upgrades have been a tad underwhelming.

The Google Pixel looked like my saving grace, though the online reaction to the Pixel 4 has been far from what I expected. Google appear to have dropped the ball on a few features, whilst opting not to include others.

For anyone that’s in a similar mindset to me or was once an avid iPhone user, what device of the latest generation would you suggest? At the moment, sticking with the X for another year, until another round of releases, may well be the solution.

How Can I Get Distracting Google Ads Removed from the Margins Of My Child's School Homework Computer?

My daughter says she can't focus on her homework, and I don't blame her. I couldn't either, with ads for stuff I want flashing constantly beside my homework. The ads take up about 1/4 of the screen. Her class requires using Google to do homework, and turning it online.

All I know to do is use duct tape on the screen, but she says the ads change sides sometimes, so that's not even a solution.

Please help...!

RCS is arriving to the Masses

So a few of my friends and including myself in the past 48hrs have noticed that now we can see if a recipient of a text message has read a message and also is typing one(and vice versa). My friends recently received an update on there Samsung devices then the feature was enabled. I am currently using a Pixel device and works wonderfully when texting there Samsung like devices. I am sure this also dependent on your provider which theirs is Fido/Rogers(Canada) to enable this. Also, on the manufacturers to release the update for your smartphones can use this feature. Anyway, it's good to see a long awaited feature for me personally make it to non-pixel devices. Anyone else noticed this change?

Tethering vs Dongle

Hi there.

I am going to be living abroad for about 10-12 mounths. And I need a local phone number, but still want to keep my old number.

I am gonna use some of my spare time gaming, but I don't want to spend money on both broadband and 2 phone contracts.

I can use my phone to tether to my laptop (unlimited data) and I get a pretty good result. But I get these lagspikes every so often, and it makes gaming unbearable. Can a 4G dongle solve this problem?

Sorry for bad english. :)

First time posting here. I’ve bought 2 led bulbs in the past year and both of them have dimmed? I don’t know how that happened.

I use them outside for my porch. No water has ever hit them and they’re inside of a glass casing as well. The reason I ask is because I have older bulbs in my bedroom that I turn on every night for hours and they’re still bright as the day I bought them.

Different applications of Artificial Intelligence

An interesting take on how different applications of Artificial Intelligence can improve our lives, and make us re-think machine learning. I recommend giving it a read here

Snippet:
Parkinson’s disease is the second most common age-related neurodegenerative disease, following Alzheimer’s disease. According to the Parkinson’s Foundation, in the United States, healthcare costs related to this disease total about 25 billion dollars per year alone. Quality of life for Parkinson’s patients relies heavily on how early treatment starts, therefore requiring a correct diagnosis. It motivates the authors of this paper and presents a machine learning approach to tackling the misdiagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. They collect smartphone data on 1853 participants with and without Parkinson’s disease. Specifically, they collect signals from walking, voice, tapping, and memory tests using a smartphone application. As previously mentioned, Parkinson’s is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. Therefore, they use the temporal nature of the data to detect the disease.

In what other ways do you think technology will change our lives in the future?

Let's turn this thread into a startup in less than 24 hours.

I'm a firm believer in communities coming together to formulate and discuss the birth of new ideas or to build upon existing concepts, evolving them into problem-solving initiatives. For a while now, I've been trying to go at it alone - I've wanted to start a successful company for a number of years, lacking in one crucial area - I haven't really engaged the startup community at all! With this said, I have found moderate success in business - however I would be lying if I said I was satisfied.

This is what has motivated me to reach out to the startup community - I want to build something with you - together! This thread can be used to introduce yourself and your idea - hopefully as we progress, matches can be made, relationships formed and ideas worked on together.

With all that said, let's get going. A few ideas to get us rolling:

  1. Platform for Brick and Mortar businesses to swap physical locations (leases).
  2. A platform for startups to temporarily swap or trade staff with specific skill-sets to other startups.

Looking forward to seeing what this becomes :)

Suggestions for Live-Streaming from a Church

Hello all,

I’m trying to get some ideas for setting up a more legit way of live-streaming Masses at my church for those who are home bound. Currently we use a Facebook Live via my iPhone. I’m looking for a more permanent scenario that other people would be able to work as well. My thoughts were:

  1. Using 1080p or 4K IP security cameras for the video feed that then can be accessed from anywhere.
  2. Some type of audio encoder that can be connected to the microphone system we have in the church itself. I’ve read about audio IP, similar to IP cameras, to have the same approach for the audio.
  3. IP cameras/audio plugged into WiFi router in church basement.
  4. Live-streamer/OBS installed on a desktop in the church basement.
  5. Using Remote Desktop to access the computer from someone live-streaming the mass from home.

Does this sound too far off? Any additional ideas or suggestions especially for encoding the audio?

Thanks so much!

Hey guys, my Aunt recently got sick and is pretty much bed-riddenand can't afford any tv services or anything of the like, so I've been filling a hard drive with movies for her. Some of the files are massive though, which is obviously limiting what I can load onto it for her. So I was just wondering if any of you have a favourite program for compressing your video files? A free program would be ideal, as I don't really have much in the way of funds at the moment, either. Thanks in advance!

TECH INDUSTRY QUESTION

Hey there! Some companies (e.g Microsoft /IBM etc) may offer some internship programs (e.g 6 months) where you learn some IT stuff (e.g Network Engineer) . Is this considered equal to university/College degrees or so? Can you get other jobs by having that certificate or so? 🤔

[Open Beta] The Newsphere: A News Visualization Platform

Hey guys, thought you might be interested in this. My friends and I are working on a website called The Newsphere and we’re looking for others who share our interest in understanding both current and past events to help us beta test our platform.

The Newsphere acts as a virtual map of world news, enabling users to see the news as the result of a complex web of relationships between people, places, organizations, and countries. You can watch our intro video here: newsphere.org or keep reading to learn more about the Newsphere.

Basically, our model analyzes thousands of news articles every day, and uses natural language processing to extract the different entities in them, as well as to identify relationships between them. Over time we construct narratives, which the user can see illustrated on a graphical timeline. The goal here is to give context to current events, enabling users to view recent developments in light of past patterns of behavior.

If you’re interested in learning more, you can comment below or email me directly at [alex@newsphere.org](mailto:alex@newsphere.org) and I'd be happy to get back to you. If you're interested in signing up for the open beta (which we're planning to launch by the end of the month!), you can find the form here: https://newsphere.org/signup Thanks again!

Affordable Alternatives to Mathtalk?

Hi guys:

Hopefully somebody can help me answer this question. I’m physically disabled And I need dictation software that will work with math. I know math talk exists and it seems like a great program, but I just can’t afford it. Does anyone here know of anything else that would work in a similar fashion but not cost me three to $600? Thanks for your time!

Can two people have the same number??

So I have quite the history in terms of my parents. Long story short, my dad has been in and out of prison, and my mom was a druggie for most of my life and picked up on some questionable habits like getting phones through unconventional means.

However, recently she has contacted me through another number, however I just finished talking to her today through my sisters phone and it turns out that most of the things she has been saying are not what SHE herself has been saying. My sister and grandma have also run into some weird occurrences like my grandma calling the number and some man named David answering. My sister has messaged the number and this David would reply saying “wrong number”. And whoever this David is has been posing as my dad this whole time.

So in summary, my mom has a phone that someone else is talking through while this guy has been posing as my dad.

iPhone 11 pro or note 10+?

I'm thinking of buying a new phone either a note10+ or iPhone 11 pro. I have researched on every aspect and had my hands on too. I was concerned about lifetime of the handsets because iam spending 1100$ on a phone I want it TO LAST ATLEAST 4 YEARS WITHOUT ANY TROUBLE (even though I never used one for that long time) Imo note 10+ doesn't long for that much time. Please share your thoughts.
