I'm buying a work laptop on my employer's tab. I can spend up to $1450 USD. Whatever I buy is mine and whatever is leftover I receive in cash. So, I want bang for my buck. My employer has a relationship with Dell (i.e. moderate discount from retail) but I can buy whatever I want.
I use some professional software but nothing too intensive. Sometimes, I run stat analyses in Excel. Most of the time, I have about 5 pdfs or word docs open and about a dozen Chrome tabs open. I'm a heavy multi-tasker but mostly for light operations. E.g. reading articles, email, streaming videos, writing Word docs, and some other business tasks. No photo or video editing or gaming of any sort (I'm a console guy).
My major concern is durability. I travel a lot and am clumsy as hell. I need something that will last -- especially in the hinges.
Right now, I'm stuck between:
(1) an XPS 13, 10th gen i7, 8gb RAM, 256 ssd for 1300 USD; and
(2) a Latitude 5310, 10th gen i7, 16gb RAM, 512 ssd for 1195.
Dell is offering more steep discounts (relative to retail) on the Latitude series.

Ive just installed tp link m4 mesh in my double story house. Each floor is only around 1090 square feet. Using mesh has proven the best solution as now i have great signal around the house.
However in one room on the second floor, im using a repeater, as my pc do not have a wifi connection. I had to use the extender for its lan port for my pc.
To anyone experienced or knowledgeable, this is my question: will the use of extender + mesh affects wifi speed from the mesh system?
I tried both scenarios, and testing speed with the repeater either turned on or off. The data i got was all over the place.
Or, do i need to reset my modem? Since ive linked it with the repeater? Ive heard using a repeater cuts my bandwith in half. Ty for reading

Microsoft said Friday it is permanently closing nearly all of its physical stores around the world. Like other retailers, the software and computing giant had to temporarily close all of its stores in late March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
My grandmother has never owned a computer or cellphone but isolation due to covid has convinced her to get internet! I bought her an iPad for her birthday and will have to teach her not only how to navigate the iPad itself, but also how to use different apps (FaceTime, Facebook, messenger, email, internet, YouTube — and how to get games from App Store). I have accounts for everything made for her already.
I’m going to show her all of this in person but I thought it would be helpful to type up a guide with pics/screenshots to help if she has a question or runs in to problems. She lives a few hours away in a very small community, so this “guide” might save her from having to call someone or wait for someone to visit. She’s very sharp and will catch on quickly no doubt, but obviously this is still a lot of new info to take in!
Any tips or advice on either how to best teach her or what to include in said guide? All suggestions welcome!

Facebook has recently launched this feature that allows you to turn off political ads in your news feed. This feature has been introduced as a part of campaign ahead of the 2020 US Elections.
There are two options to configure this setting:
On an Individual Ad click on the "Confirmed Organization" button and then choose "See fewer ads about this topic".
In the Settings > Ad Preferences > Click on "Ad Topic" then expand "Social Issues, Elections or Politics" and then select "See fewer ads about this topic".
Note: The feature has just been rolled out in the U.S. and it's not currently available to everyone. It should be available to all users within a few days.
After having my trusty Samsung Galaxy S8 for almost 3 years, I cracked its screen. As I prepared for its imminent death, I started to look at my options for a replacement.
For as long as I can remember, I was limited to 2 options: either buy a phone outright for a hefty price or sign a contract with the devil (A.K.A. a phone provider) to soften the blow over years. Personally, I'd always chosen the contract route even though this meant that both my device and I were carrier locked. However, this time around, I considered buying a phone outright to avoid being chained to particular phone provider for any length of time.
However, I was pleased to find that there are a few more options these days. First, I noticed that Amazon offers payment plans for select devices, allowing me to soften the financial over 5 months. Then I found that Samsung, in partnership with PayBright, offers 36, 24, and 12 month payment plans. Both of these options are interest free, so there really doesn't seem to be any downside to spreading the payment out over time. Amazing, an unlocked device and the option to pay over time. I ended up acquiring a Galaxy S20+ through Samsung, opting into a 12 month payment plan. I was even more pleased to find that my payments do not start for a few months.
All of this led me to wonder, why would anyone choose to sign a phone provider contract? Are phone provider contracts going the way of Blockbuster? Are carriers upset that manufacturers like Samsung are undercutting their business? I'd imagine this would hurt their relationship to some extent.

So I need help finding what equipment I need to easily switch from my PC to MacBook using the same 2 monitors. Bonus points if I can easily switch my computer mouse and keyboard too. One monitor I have runs average hertz but my main monitor runs 240 hertz which I would like to keep instead of loosing that through a cheaper HDMI splitter. If I have to switch one or two cords for the process then okay but as long as I can find an easy switch process while maintaining hertz then that would be awesome. It's undeniable that some apps have the monopoly of the market. Think about it. You go to the app store and you see that the first downloads are Faceboook, Instagram, Youtube, etc. People switch between those apps and it seems clear that it's extremely hard to create something able to compete against this industry colossus. So I was issued a work laptop with Cisco AnyConnect. Our home connection is set to whitelist mac addresses. I've done the whitelisting of the laptop and connecting to the network, but it doesn't connect with the mac filtering active. It connects just fine when the filtering is off.
Am I missing something here? Is AnyConnect broadcasting something else that I'm not seeing rn?
I have a microsd 32gb , My laptop has no microsd so I put it in a SD card adapter and plugged it in.

I have tried multiple tools such as Disk Drill, EaseUS and they all need to be paid in order to recover. Recently, I bought a usb based capture card for 23 dollars. I was thrilled to get it, until I plugged it in and it didn't work. I tried for about an hour trying to fix it, but I gave up and lost a lot of faith. I really want to record switch gameplay without spending 200 dollars. But for some reason, capture cards cost 200 dollars. Sure, there are cheap capture cards, but its still 80-100 dollars. Seriously, why are capture cards so expensive? I mean all it does is record gameplay. Its tough for me because I'm a person who doesn't have easy access to money because I'm a kid. There really should be capture card alternatives. (I dont consider usb capture cards alternatives. Mostly because I had a horrible experience with a usb capture card.)
I have got some new WH-CH510 bluetooth headphones. When i connect them to my laptop through bluetooth everything is going fine, but when i open discord/ts3 all the sound that goes through the microphone gets relayed through the headphone speakers. It makes everything sound very echoey and for example if i make the slightest sound, i can still hear it in my headphones. I unchecked the 'listen to this device' box and the microphone boost is at 0.0 db. Also when i open discord/ts3 and i have music playing on youtube in background it suddenly stops and all the sound going through my mic is played in the headphones. I want to mention even though i use the incorporated mic in laptop (Realtek High Definition Audio) i get the same issue. In discord, if i want to choose the headphones mic (WH-CH510 Hands-Free AG Audio)(Bluetooth) the problem is the same.
So, I'm thinking about buying an iPhone 8 or 7 and I found on Amazon an iPhone 8 with 260 pounds, unlike its 600 pounds price that you'll find from a reseller.. However, it is Renewed (that means that someone used it for a short period of time, returned it and Amazon handled all the damage the previous owner might have done). The basic premise is that petitions are far too easy to ignore, and especially by Governments most are.
They are great at engaging people. 1 click and a nice feeling that you've done something, but what is that something?

- to join in a (non-violent) mass action on a set date
- to occur if the pledge reaches a pre-agreed number of signatures
- if specific set of demands aren't met before that date
Then your one-click would be just as easy to join in with, but have some teeth if ignored. It would also encourage creative ideas for how to apply pressure as i consider protesting a fairly blunt tool also, given that the biggest protests in history were against the Iraq war, and...

I had this laptop for a few years and while it never got so hot it would shut down when I discovered undervolting was a thing I decided it only made sense to do it. An easy and free way to lower temps and extend its life it sounded stupid not to do it.
Now if I turn my laptop on after being shut down or sleeping I need to let it run for a few minutes otherwise if I play an intensive game it crashes. After a few minutes of running I can play the game perfectly with no issues and amazing temps.
But even with that so is this a sign that I should let it use a little more volts? Or is it fine to leave it as is and just let it warm up before playing games?
I keep seeing posts about the death of Moore's law and how we are already encountering physical barriers to CPU improvements. With this said, does this mean that the next generation of consoles will likely last much longer than previous generations? Potentially I am completely misunderstanding, but I have been wondering why we even need to bother with a wifi connection everywhere these days. Out phones do not need it, why cant I pay for a 4g connection for myself and give the network the MAC (I think!) address of each device I use and they all connect to 4g instead of to wifi.
Would save wifi deadspots and needing to buy mesh wifi extenders and boosters.
My 4g connection is around 10x faster than my wifi connection it just got me thinking.
Worked well for years, stopped today.
Wifi works fine and RUKU finds and recognizes the wifi signal.
Still just won't connect.

I got ddos’d twice this month and now my speed is fluctuating from 7 to 17mps which keeps kicking me from games. I’m now gonna try replacing my router to see if that’ll fix my problem. I want to create an app which will be like a call center. It will be connected to a phone number. If someone calls on the number, the call should be directed to the app where one of the logged in users can pick up the call and speak to the caller. So, I have a bunch of cds (audio cds, like albums) and I realised I don't have any way of playing them anymore. My laptop doesn't have a drive and my ps4 doesn't read cds. And because I have my soundbar that sounds fine, I was wondering if I could get an external cd/dvd drive, connect it to my tv and play my audio cds that way. Does anyone have an external drive and know if this works? I don't want to get a dvd player because it's a bit more expensive and I have no room for it or use. The ps4 already plays dvds and blurays.
