Windows won’t save my space icon layout

I use windows 10 home, and starting yesterday when I was moving some stuff around, when ever I would restart/shut down my PC it wouldn’t save my icon layout. I found a similar issue on a windows support thread, I tried what it said and that was to go to cmd prompt and search for corrupted files. I checked and it fixed them, but it still wouldn’t save my icon layout. Does anyone know anything else to try?

Hello there, my parents are having a TV problem.

Since I can't post pictures on here, it's hard to explain, but, when the TV starts up, everything's ok a second, then the screen goes dark on the lower left corner. It's not dead pixels, it's just darker than the other part of the screen? Anyone has the same problem? Or knows if it's repairable. Thanks in advance.

Germany’s imminent decision on Huawei, does it matter? (Opinion)

I keep up on world events and it’s drawn my attention that Germany will soon be deciding what path to take regarding the degree to which Huawei building it’s 5G infrastructure. I would suggest it is in the best interest of Germany, the United States and much of the world that Huawei not be trusted to build the networks our governments and corporations use to share information. The best way to mitigate this sort of espionage risk is to avoid Huawei telecommunications gear entirely.

Huawei has for some time been criticized for being under control of the CCP and recently the Pentagon let it be known to the public that the PLA controls Huawei. Any party Germany works with is exposed to having its corporate and government secrets handed over to China if Germany allows their information to pass through Huawei telecommunications gear. I personally know someone who’s company had their product and brand itself counterfeited in China. Corporate espionage facilitated by China accounts for hundreds of billions in IP theft a year. At the same time other government targets of spying suffer similar fates with costs being hard to measure.

It is said that depending on the state, dropping Huawei could cost a couple billion and China is also threatening retaliation. Most of us are seeing that every year the carrots China’s offering shrink and the stick gets bigger. That makes a tough choice, but those costs must be compared to the ongoing risks Huawei would pose. Germany would be one of the last big players to stand up to the CCP and Huawei, benefitting them and those who share information with. Their approach could be a model for other states to follow as well.

Some say the US has similar capabilities as China, but it’s China that is actively using these tools to steal IP. As far as other forms of spying, every country engages in espionage and every country has the prerogative to resist it. Mathias Döpfner, CEO of Axel Springer SE, the parent company of Insider Inc. recently compared trusting the US verses China as choosing between an imperfect democracy or a perfect dictatorship.

Taking a step back from this specific issue, China does not allow their people representation in government, free speech, and distrusts them to the point of coupling extensive censorship with propaganda. The rest of the world is finding out the CCP does not intend to treat us with any more regard than their own people, engaging in numerous grey zone activities. Huawei isn’t alone the most serious issue in the world, but when combined by the other behaviors and capabilities China has been developing recently it is more than troubling.

Tech Help!

So I have a Dell Inspiron 5378, and the touch screen recently stopped working. Dell support is literally useless, so I have been trying to fix it myself. I think the problem is that I dont have a driver for the touch screen. In Device Manager, I select "show hidden decices" and in Human Interface Devices, there should be "HID-compliant touch screen" driver that I can enable/disable. Its not there, and im trying to re-install it. The laptop doesnt recognize that its missing, and I also cannot find it anywhere, not even on dell support with my service tag.

I tried factory resetting for a new Windows 10 install and it hasnt conme back. I also done a fresh install via USB, still hasnt come back. I have tried youtube, and google search, and they all tell me to try the device manager for scanning hardware changes, and than restart my laptop to re-install the driver by itself. That also does not work. Just need to know how to get a touch screen driver so that it works again.

If anyone could helped it would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi, Guys! I'm not sure if this is happening to you, but my ad feed on YouTube has been bombarded with people that claim you can start an online business, and that they send you a series of clips they have received from gurus who they reached out to and who helped them.

Funny thing is, they ALL have similar scripts, and they say all this in the ad like in an interview, filmed on a low-quality camera. I hope I'm not the only one who receives ads from websites like humandigitallifestyle or other websites where the text on the youTube link is "Time to change?".

Does anyone else have these ads shown in their ad feed? And is this an organized ad campaign, or an affiliate program?

Repairing old tech lots

Question About Setup Lighting

Hey guys, I Have always been wondering how people manage to have their entire gaming setup/Just any setup in general, Change lighting with the flick of one button.

I generally have to choose the colour on my LED lights remote, Then change my RAM colour, and then my GPU colour, Then my keyboard mouse and headset colour. But people manage to change it ALL with the click of a button...

And I think that this place was the best to ask since it sounds pretty techy.

I’m 22 years old and I graduated this May with a Bachelor’s in Finance. I want to look into/start a career in tech if it’s right for me. Any advice?

Please do know that I majored in finance because I thought it was the most interesting undergraduate business major, but I never planned to pursue a career in finance. I was thinking about going to get a masters in accounting and sit for my CPA, or go to law school. I have decided against both, and want to look into different fields in tech. However, I’m not sure exactly what I wanna do in tech or what is right for me. Does anyone have any advice for me, before I apply to a specific masters programs or look into coding boot camps, etc. I know tech is way more than just coding. I am also fortunate enough to where my parents would help cover tuition if I were to go get a graduate degree or do decide on a bootcamp. Thank you

Upper clock limit for a Silicon based core ?

So speaking in theoretical terms, what would be a Clock limit for a Silicon based core ? We of course also need to take into account the physical size of the core. I assume at a certain point, you lose speed because the core is just to big. So where do you think is that point ?

Could we for example see something like 12GHz on a single core ?

Or is the sky the limit and we could, with a big cooling solution, see 20GHz on a core ?

From what i have been able to read, there is no limit in terms of how fast you can make the Core. The limit comes from different stuff such as the Memory. A 12Ghz Core is all but worthless if you dont have Memory that can keep up.
Not to mention the heat that would build up. Transistor size is also important. We are at around 7nm right now and some companys plan to reach 3nm by 2022. How much that plays into it i am not sure.

[Question] Does something like this exist?

Hey guys,

at my current internship I've been doing almost nothing besides wiping HDDs (3 overwrites) and secure erasing SSDs(NAND flashing) from co-workers and customers and I've had a lot of time to think about how tedious the process is.

So, I was wondering for external SSDs, couldn't I just plug in a USB drive with a battery or whatever, that can erase it with a click of a button? Afaik all the software I'm using does, is sending an electric current through the SSD which put's all blocks on 0. Is there something like that?

Weird amazon alexa email.

This may be a dumb post, i dont really care. I got an email from amazon alexa that says-

"Your alexa settings have been updated

Household Drop in was enabled from one of your echo devices or from the alexa app

You and other people using your echo devices can now drop in on other devices in your household"

I want an app on Android which syncs with the internet time but gives me the option to offset that time by +- some seconds. Like it always syncs with the time by internet (like it automatically does when you check the option Automatic time) but also gives me an editable field where I can set an offset like if I set +5 seconds, my phone time will always be ahead of internet time by 5 seconds. Tech companies' employees seem to be the ones experiencing the highest levels of stress, and the most at risk of burnout and severe mental health issues. Yet most of the time nobody seems to notice these issues until it's too late.

I'm wondering whether your company (or any company you worked for) has any system/tool in place to monitor and react quickly, rather than the standard surveys or 1-to-1 meetings between employee and their manager.

Would having side projects as a business individual be helpful like it would be for someone in tech?

Often engineers and computer science focused workers will have a bunch of side projects that they worked on to impress recruiters. They do this because they can make something from scratch with code. Designers often showcase their portfolio, but business individuals don't really have anything.

You could say case studies, but most business jobs don't have case studies (some do) as part of day to day operations. Would business individuals want to team up with people in tech and design side projects to add to their resume?

A screen that looks like a canvas?

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for some sort of technology that is either:
-A screen that feels like a canvas
-A film to put on a screen to make it feel like a canvas.

I'm working for a museum right now, and they want to showcase some art on a screen, where the user can switch which art he wants to see with a button. However, it shouldn't look teach heavy or digital, but re-create as much as possible the feel of looking at a real canvas.

I'm thinking of a screen not emitting any light, or some screens similar to what is used for kindles. I'm not even sure something exists.
If anyone have any recommendations or any keywords I can look into, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey guys, Since I’m trying to connect my PlayStation to the WiFi but it does not work because of too much interference I read a lot on the internet. Basically my PlayStation and the router are separated by a massive wall but there’s not way for me to minimize the distance. However, I’ve read it’s possible to convert a coaxial cable/ plug to ethernet. Are there actually converters that would let me send the Internet signal through this box, convert it to ethernet and plug it into my PS4? Does that work? Thanks for reading

Problems With Calibration

So, I have this generic N64 controller that works with USB, and most seems to work well, but the joystick has some sensitivity issues in certain areas, and I can't seem to figure out how to properly calibrate it. Hey Everyone!

I currently have a social enterprise where industry leaders administer educational material to refugees in order for them to gain access to jobs in the field. This way they secure an ongoing stable source of income. While there are many individuals, I was wondering if anyone knew if certain companies had AI for Good programs or would be interested in outsourcing their computer vision jobs (i know there's Google & Microsoft, not too sure beyond that since not many had a 'AI for Good' program besides them). Tips for Beginner Tech Review Channel

I'm considering starting a tech review channel for budget tech that offers the most value at the cheapest prices. I'm currently living in Pakistan and the market isn't as saturated here and I feel with good insight into products and decent production quality I can make my mark.

​

Equipment:

1-I just started my first job and I have very little starting equipment which includes a phone for recording, a couple of nice tripods and a decent room with natural lighting for the video shooting. I will get a hand me down Nikkon D5100 after a few months from a sibling that would help.

2-I also am not really earning that much by all means so the one thing that scares me the most is buying tech to review. My plan is to keep the focus of my channel for products between 25-75$ dollars largely so while it's not all that expensive, even at 4 videos a month it eats out a good chunk of my salary. The only way around that I see right now is to buy the product, review and then put them on a page to sell at 70-80% of the cost while explaining that this was only used for review purposes.

Others:

1-I plan to post a video a week with testing on the product being done thoughout the work week and the final review being filmed during the weekend.

2-I'm largely opening the channel because slowly technology is becoming more available in my country and there's no source that talks just about tech that is widely available in Pakistan and also offers good value.

3-I plan on calling the channel Fasih's Room (Fasih being my name).

​

4-I will focus largely on tech such as TWS, Smart Bands and Smart Watches, Blue Tooth controllers and then a host of random tech that I think will be fun for everyone to buy and use.

​

So for all you YouTube aficionados and reviewers alike. Does this seem like a good idea and one where I can minimize my losses?

Help me pick out the most appropriate smart watch for my disabled father in case he falls down. He is to stubborn/proud to wear a life alert.

I am looking for something that will pair with his Samsung galaxy s7 active, that has the capability to make and receive calls, bonus points if it has some type of fall sensor or alert. My dad's old and has been falling and I only live about 10 minutes away but I would have a lot more peace of mind if I knew he had this on. Both setups are about $400, and if the 3.1.2 is chosen, rear speaker will be added later on. I'm just not sure if Dolby atmos is worth it yet. Also, this is going in a medium sized appartment.

Samsung update?

Is it normal to get this many system updates so quickly? I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 10+, and I got a system update this morning, and installed it about 30 minutes ago. A few minutes later, I got another system update that said update 4. I installed it, with another system update showing up after, and it said it was update 6. I installed it, and now I have a 4th system update appearing called update 7. I haven't installed it yet, is this normal to have so many updates so quickly? Is anybody else experiencing this?

Suggestion for phone reviewers: When reviewing charging speed, please also review screen-on charging speed. It is equally as important.

When watching phone reviews online (YouTubers and tech magazines), I have noticed that most tech reviewers only measure the charging speed while the screen is turned off!

But a historical weakness of many fast charging phones is that the charging speed is severely throttled while the device is in use. Fast charging thus only works when the device is in stand-by mode or powered off, which means that one can not use the device and charge fast at the same time. Screen-on charging speed is equally as important, because not being able to up the battery quickly while using the device at the same time is very, very inconvenient.

I have done measurements with several historical Samsung flagship devices such as Note 5, S6, S7, S8, Note 8 and Note 9, and noticed that the charging speed is close to 15 watts (as supposed) with screen off but miserable 6 watts total with screen on, which would have definitely been a relevant point for tech reviewers to address.

Whether there is a good technical reason or not for mobile phone manufacturers to add such a restriction, e.g. heat, it should still be addressed in mobile phone reviews.

A couple days ago I saw this video of a guy taking a a Ethernet cable connecting it to his router, then plugging it in his wall using a adapter I guess, then plugging a Ethernet to his gaming console in another room, and plugging that into the wall and it worked does anyone know what that is called?

Anyone had experience with hiring someone to develop an app or website for you?

I have several good ideas for creating businesses, and I really am looking forward to when I can actually pursue them. One of the big problems is that I don't have the slightest clue on how to build an aesthetically pleasing and functional website or app. Has anyone had any experience with outsourcing talent to build a website or app for you? How was your experience? What did you like/dislike about it? Is the price as intimidating as I think it is?

Sattelite Dishes

This is kinda a stupid question, but I know next to nothing about sattelite signals😂 I know dishes send/recieve signals via bouncing them off sattelites, but I was wondering if you were to point two dishes directly at one another, could they communicate? Like could the data being carried by a coax cable be sent by the dish and be directly intercepted by another dish and move down its coax cable?

Could you in the future erase memory for personal use?

Not sure if this the right sub for this but Im here anyway. To clarify the question heres an example if I did something enjoyable like watching a show or playing a game but after the first watch or play through its not as fun after. Could i remove/erase/block memories of something like that as to experience it for the first time many times?

Can someone help me with my unique input lag problem?

so for the past 2 years I have been having this really strange and annoying ,,input lag,, problem if you will. Quick description: every game I play, on any screen, any system, any possible option, in-game sensitivities, smoothness and everything feels delayed. Like there is a huge stone attached to it or something. I can't have snappy aim and when I try to aim on 1 spot several times, it is not possible at all. I'd also like to add that this problem is really changeable, sometimes it is better and sometimes (most of the times), it is horrible. I tried several PCs, gaming consoles, controllers, monitors, TVs, cables (anything you can change or do to reduce input lag or replace possible faulty device). I tried it at my friend's house where his system works fine and mine works fine, too and when I invited him to our flat, it felt bad for him on my system as well. I would also like to add that I play Call of duty competitively since 2013 and I am above average 21 years young player and I definitely know something is wrong there, because it is a major problem and it would feel awful even for an average player. I tried posting this problem many times, but people thought I had some health problems or that I am old (LOL), but I have now done my research and it has to be something in my flat and I can't move since I have just started working and everything is way too expensive. Thanks to everyone who stops by and at least tries to read this. I am really desperate already since I can make pretty good money doing gaming, but I just can't with this...

How to avoid burnout at the stage where everything is jargon

I'm a beginner to programming in general. I'm at that stage where everything is jargon - I'm learning some java before university.

And because its all jargon now, I find I get frustrated because I don't know a lot. So I end up either delaying learning it until I'm behind schedule or just stressing about it all. Both of which aren't good.

Any advice?

Hackers On Planet Earth 2020 Includes A Cyberpunk Media Hackathon, "The Cyberpunk Now Film Festival"

Hi!

I’m leading the team organizing The Cyberpunk Now Film Festival as part of Hackers On Planet Earth 2020.

When I heard HOPE was going virtual for coronareasons, I wanted to help make something interesting that people could do from home.

This is a live film festival, where participants must make their films during the event.

We only have a few days until the event starts, and I'm trying to get the word out. More participants is more fun.

On July 25th we will publish top-secret "required challenge elements" that have to be included in the projects (meant to establish a level playing field), and then participants will have 5 days to make a film.

The thinking is that we're very much living in a world predicted by the cyberpunk literature of the 80s and 90s, and so much of what was science fiction is now routine or the chaotic backdrop of our daily life. So, what better time to help people express themselves through this sort of channel?

Please help us get the word out about the event, and absolutely please participate. Even if you don't participate, definitely tune in on August 2nd for a screening of the winners in the HOPE livestream (not sure what time yet).

We're not trying to make a huge profit from submission fees. The submission fee is a speed bump to prevent low quality submission spamming. Something keeps coming up that I think is interesting: Is cyberpunk dystopian? Wikipedia says yes, but some of the famous authors say no. I put a note about this in the FAQ on the festival site, but in summary, cyberpunk was about a future where the world didn't end in a nuclear holocaust, and it is a genre which arose in the 80s, when that was a likely outcome, so many say it isn't dystopian at all, that it is rather a hopeful genre. Thoughts on that?

YouTube multi-loop skip technology

There is an extension called looper for youtube that allows you to loop over any given section of a youtube video. For example, if you want to repeat a song but don't like something extra at the end, you can loop over the video and end early.

Does anyone know of how to do this with the added feature of skipping over a middle time segment? For example, you want to loop over a song but you don't like the middle of it or there is some interruption.

KVM switch with automatic Peripheral swap

I came up with an idea today that I'm sure isn't "my unique idea" but would phenomenal for work space environments. It's not a critical asset but rather a quality of life upgrade to current KVM switches.

Background: So in my workspace, as a Linux systems engineer, I have around 8 boxes to move back and forth from that utilize a KVM switch. I utilize 4 monitors with 2 boxes on simultaneously at any given time and use one set of KB&M across the devices.

Idea: Wouldn't it be nice to have a way of allowing the KB&M swap between the two active systems as I cross the monitors edge on one system and automatically be allowed to used across the second active system by an autonomous switch by the KVM and vice versa?

I'm not exactly a SME on KVM switches design and processing but I figured that this isn't exactly out of reach in the near future. I'm pretty sure it would require some sort of tracking of the peripherals by monitors or the switch in great enough detail to know at what pixels to begin the swap but I thought it would be a neat idea.

I'm sure, that if I'm completely out of orbit, you guys will be sure to let me know, but if it makes sense, do you all think that would a nice quality of life improvement? I know its a specific scenario but I imagine my "background" is not unique enough for this to be an unnecessary QOL improvement.
