Sarah's solid state battery innovation - a future ethical dilemma
The pace of technology and innovation is so fast that soon virtually limitless portable power will be universally available to everyone. This article explores the link between the innovators absolute joy and the euphoria and pleasure of invention and the extreme ethical dilemma of perhaps releasing a power source that lifts the limits that currently prevents humanity from being subjugated by machines. This invention so damaging that for all the good it could bring, on balanced it could be also harnessed for the worst forms of exploitation, destruction and chaos.
Do you believe that energy capacity itself can become a controversy and requires strict regulation? Perhaps international treaties and safeguards to ensure unconstrained robotics can never be used in battle?

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is scheduled to lift off at 1:25 p.m. PDT Sunday from the coastal base, carrying 10 more satellites for Iridium Communications, which is replacing its entire constellation with next-generation satellites.
Scheduled for Jun 25, 2017 SpaceX is targeting launch of Iridium-2 from Space Launch Complex 4E (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The instantaneous launch window is at 1:25 p.m. PDT, or 20:25 UTC, on Sunday, June 25. A backup launch opportunity opens at 1:19 p.m. PDT, or 20:19 UTC, on Monday, June 26.

This is the second set of 10 satellites in a series of 75 total satellites that SpaceX will launch for Iridium’s next generation global satellite constellation, Iridium® NEXT. The satellites will begin deployment about an hour after launch.

Best external hard drive for a MacBook Pro?
My 1TB hard drive is out of space and I need to send my MacBook Pro in because I am having issues with the keyboard. What external hard drive would be a good fit for the following constraints: 1) I rarely back my computer up because I have a lot in the cloud and finding my hard drive, plugging it in and leaving it plugged in until the backup is done is just too much work. 2) My computer hard drive is 1TB and I am a photo hoarder, so it needs to have a lot of storage. 3) I currently use time machine but I'm open to other suggestions.
Thanks in advance!

Self updating website?
Hello- I was wondering if there was a way to create a website that could le self update with articles from specific Google alerts or RSS feeds? For example, if I'm interested in a topic like backyard decking and I wanted it to update with new articles written daily about that you're taking that came from the Google alert for instance is there a way to do that where I don't have to manually input the content myself?
I'd like to set up a website this way as a clearinghouse for all daily articles written on my topic. I'd like to be able to add some commentary above or below each article.
I'd be grateful for any tips or suggestions.
Thanks in advance.

Google Buisness Page
Our restaurant has recently learned that we do not have the ability to change our Google page associated with our buisness.
We know that someone is maintaining the informatation but we do not know who. We have asked throught the "leave a suggestion for the page" for controle to be returned to us, with no avail.
We have let google know that the person controling the page is not connected to our buisness and they have not given us a way to fight for ownership.
Is there anything we can do to regain our buisness?

Password manager
I've decided I have too many passwords now and I'll be getting a password manager. I was hoping I could get some advice on which. I haven't used one before and I don't really know which ones are better or worse. I'm pretty flexible but if possible I'd like to make sure it stays under 4gb. From what I've read that should be pretty easy.
I already carry around a flash drive in my wallet incase I need one (comes in handy a lot more than you'd expect) so I'll always have access to it. But it's only a 4gb one (I'll probably upgrade it at some point but it's a really tiny one I got for free so I'm not complaining)
(If this isn't the best sub, tell me and I'll move it)

Duolingo Explains Technical Debt
Explanation of technical debt from the Duolingo blog:
"In case you're not familiar with the term, technical debt is like financial debt. You "borrow money" by making engineering decisions that let you develop something quickly. In the long term, though, development starts to stall because of these accumulated shortcuts, at which point it's time to pay it off."

Facebook keeps suggesting the same person to be my friend.
I have the Facebook app on my iPhone. I allow it to send me notifications for whatever reason. Everyday, at random times, it suggests this person to be my friend. The message will always say that it has a new friend suggestion, and then names the same person. Why does it keep recommending me the same person every day? We only have four friends in common and don't really like each other. I'm just curious as to why this happens. Google wasn't much help either.

Is the current Oculus deal worth investing in?
Hello!
First time posting a long time and I wanted to submit here and not r/Oculus as I'll probably get a biased opinion...
I've been on the fence for a while on which VR headset to buy and if it's the right time to make the investment. A friend of mine recently sent me a link which gives a good amount of store credit if you buy a touch and rift for the next week or so: (link for reference but I can remove if it's against posting rules?!) http://ift.tt/2srWX7N
From what I've read I'm pretty sure I prefer Oculus over Vive and my feeling is I'd probably spend £100 on the store anyway, so in effect I'm saving that money on the purchase, but I'm unsure on if this deal is worth it or if I should wait for price drops etc? Or does anyone know of any future promos that might make buying into VR more cost effective?!

(RANT) Samsung's Broken Alarm
So, this morning I had a driving lesson scheduled for 6:00 AM. I set an alarm on my trusty Samsung Galaxy S6 for 5:00 AM so I could wake up and attend said driving lesson (it's from one of those schools that pick you up and take you for a 2 hour spin and then drive you back). It was today that my Samsung decided to not have the alarm ring, which, mind you, was set to emit a loud noise at maximum volume along with a vibration. This alarm has never failed to wake me up in my 2 years of owning this device.
Basically, I slept through the exam and had to apologize to my instructor, whom I found out had driven 50 miles for nothing. He also refused to give me another shot, and, as a result, I now have to find someone else.
I knew that I didn't sleep through the alarm because a.) sleeping through it would be similar to sleeping through a gun fired right next to your ear, and b.) the alarm didn't grey out like it always does after either ringing and timing out or being manually turned off by me.
tl;dr - Samsung has engineered their phones to continue working at 100% capability for a really long time, but they forgot to add that longevity to their alarms, which are extremely important things for some people. This flaw not only caused me great embarrassment, but it reduced my available selection of driving instructors in a town where such people are very limited.
Thanks, Samsung!
And yes it was set for AM and not PM. And no it wasn't for 5:00 AM the next week. And yes I'll probably buy the S7 anyways.
Ok rant over.

USB 3.1 Gen 2 - UGH!
This is probably more of a vent post than a request for help although i'm not sure where I'm going with this yet.
I decided to reconfigure what I call my office which is really just a tech cave in my house. As I haven't found a replacement desk I like yet I'm stuck with the furniture setup I currently have. As everything is slowly migrating to USB 3.1 standards and god willing type-c connectors across the board I'm eargly looking forward to burning my drawer filled with Type a, b male/male female/male etc cables I've been hoarding for years because there is always that friend that needs help or can't find the cable for something.
Anyway - I'm looking to swap my pc rig from one side of the room to the other and tv/video games etc to the other side of the room but leave 3 printers, a video setup and an android dev setup where they are. This creates an issue in part because of the distance of the equipment to the rig. Currently I have a few very long USB 2.0 male/female extension cables that have worked fine in various uses but I was looking forward to replacing them with a USB 3.1 Gen 2 hub at some point so there is only 1 cable run across the room with much shorter cables looping from the hub to the equipment which is all pretty centralized.
When I setup my current rig a little over a year ago I purposely made sure it was loaded with 3.0, 3.1 and a type - c port for optimistic future compatibility.
As I read though various reviews and articles I'm left feeling completely devoid of any good options for 3.1. Most of the "gen 2"s either seem to be BS or are made by some company I've never heard of and don't trust running current through.
Yeah... that's is all.
Happy Father's Day :)

A non-developer recapping all the best and worst Google I/O announcements from a non-technical perspective.
Especially good was the author saying, I have no idea what Kotlin is but the crowd was STOKED that Google announced it so I'll put that under the best category.
http://ift.tt/2sgDZRf After you read it, there are a few points he didn't quite get right (he is a non-developer after all). Luckily a developer in the comments helps him out:
Google Assistant is way better than Siri and improving at a far more rapid pace, so bringing it to iOS is huge for Apple fans. The Android O presentation was way more than you highlighted, including bringing a huge focus on efficiency and ability to perform on low-spec devices, which means that hundreds of millions of people will actually be able to afford up to date smartphones. Even for users of high-powered phones, though, the benefit will come in increased battery life and performance.
Smart Reply is incredibly convenient in Allo (though nobody really uses Allo...) and saves a lot of time when you need to acknowledge something but don’t want to write out a full reply. (especially useful on mobile where typing sucks horribly) #TechTownToday

Reaching out to the community for perspective, product validation, and help building a team around my medical communication device in Seattle
Hello /r/Tech,
I am a licensed rehabilitative therapist (medical massage therapist and physical therapy assistant) in Seattle. Over the past couple of years I have developed and patented a Non-Verbal, Real-Time, Patient Comfort Communication Medical Device. It is a 2 part system that is designed to streamline communication between a patient and their practitioner, and is essentially the 0-10, red-green pain scale in the form of a tactile feedback alerting wearable.
We have an issued USPTO Patent, initial frankenstein prototype for proof of concept, business model, potential funding with completion of a solid business plan, and a Founder/Inventor with nearly 15 years of experience in the rehabilitative manual therapy health care field.
We are looking for a Business Development Co-Founder/CEO/MBA in Seattle, with preferable experience in bringing consumer electronics to market, business plan creation, and turning a product into a company. Medical device, wearables, and hardware manufacturing experience would be beneficial. After meeting with a top HW accelerator in SF, as well as some VCs, the consistent feedback is clear that I am in need of a business team to help develop pragmatic business plan/valuation/operations execution that can bolster the success of the product. We are confident that this product will be a drastic disruptor to the applicable healthcare fields, and there are no other competitors in this niche market I have created.
This device has applications in Massage Therapy, Dentistry, Physical Therapy, the Speech/Hearing and Developmentally Disabled patient population, Chiropractic, Language Barriers, or any other instance where a patient may experience pain at the hands of their practitioner during treatment. In the massage therapy field, "more pressure, less pressure, right there, I don't like that, that feels great," are all things that a person thinks while getting manual treatment. Dental patients can alert of pain to differing degrees, reply yes or no, ask for rinse/suction, or for a break, while gloved hands and tools are in their mouth. We are giving the patient a voice designed to let them know that their comfort is paramount.
This device places an augmented level of communication into the treatment room, and acts as a sensory extension (color changing visual cues and tactile haptic vibrations) of their nervous system, that they can share with their practitioner, who will immediately adapt to the request. We also aim to capture the meaningful Subjective data directly from the patient to include in their progress reports and insurance billing charts.
Our distribution model is to provide Continuing Education training that will count towards a healthcare professional's governmentally mandated requirements to keep their license active, as well as selling the device.
We have a prototype that has functioned well enough for us to consider proof of concept complete, however, it is cumbersome and not aesthetically pleasing. It is a basic 3d printed Patient input device, with apps running on smartwatches that act as the Practitioner alerting device. Our current objectives are to acquire funding (in the works) by developing a business plan, complete our next round of form/function prototypes that match our renderings, and then focus group and trial the device in the applicable healthcare fields, while continuing to developing our curriculum for accreditation with the governing bodies (American Massage Therapy Association, American Physical Therapy Association, American Dental Association, etc.)
Remember in the movie Avatar when the Na'vi people would plug their long braid into the creature's braid to control them via a nervous system link? This is my attempt to put my patients and I on that same level.
It could also be considered to be similar to Reddit; an upvote/downvote system to direct your practitioner during treatment.
There was also a video that reached /r/all this week of a guy who added different horn sounds to his car. Different audible tones that portray different emotions while communicating with other drivers. This method felt similar as he had "increased the vocabulary of of the standard car horn." We want to increase the ability to communicate during a treatment session.
Please say hello and share your feedback!

I live in a place where there are a few thieves that takes things into their rooms like soaps, shaving machines etc from the bathroom. i want to make a trap for them so i can find out whom the thief is so i can get em thrown out.

Social side effects of Technology?
Hello. I see a lot of people praising technology, how it has changed our world in a good way, which is true. But no one stating the disadvantages, espically social disadvantages. Being a programmer and a technology enthusiastic, I've realized just as good as technology can be - can also be bad, which has led me to become lazier and unhealthier.
There was a time, I'd have excuse to go out for shopping, eating etc. But not anymore, as I can just do that at home anyways. Apart from that, the new cool is being active on social networks and keeping up to date with them (Yes, I'm a teen) Otherwise you get left out. And social networks just depress me. Since I'm a programmer, most of the day I'm just programming if not, then just playing games - All on my chair and due to this, my eyesight also became very weak, however it's starting to get a bit better after following the 20-20 rule, which has helped me alot TBH.
I fear the day when AI takes over and all our work will be done by robots, we'd probably all end up obsess. I found this article about social side effects of technology on facebook, which made me wake up and want to start exercising or get a different career path. Am I the only who thinks like this, or are there others who can relate to me? It'd be nice to get away from all this technology, even for a minute.

4K vs 1080 TVs
I'm looking at two TV's at Costco (links below) and I don't know if the 4K TV is worth the extra $230. Both are 55" Samsung Smart TV's, so they're very easy to compare. I don't watch tons of TV, and one thing I have always wondered is will a 4K TV look any better than the 1080 version if I'm not paying for HD channels? Same goes for Netflix, do they stream in HD and will it look any better on the 4K screen?

It's 128gbs so It has tons of space, but I'm clueless at the moment and I know I wouldn't get much of a payout for it. Thank you guys for any suggestions! Sorry for bad grammar!

Computers with screens that do not emit light?
Hi r/tech,
Is anyone aware of a computer with a screen that does not emit light, instead requiring light to be shined on it? I'm thinking in the vain of some kindles. I would appreciate this feature as 1) I am aware of some research suggesting that the light emitted from computer screens is harmful to sleep patterns and 2) I would like to be able to work on a computer outside in the light rather than to be sucked into dark areas to do computer work, and 3) I'm irrationally creeped out by the glow of computer screen.
This seems like it could/should be a somewhat obvious innovation but I haven't been able to find anything like this on the web. Any insights on how to find anything like this / why this would be more difficult than I imagine to design?
Thanks!

"pirate radio" style open source alternative internet/cellular grid
I want to get a gauge on how much support something like this would pull in. I have a completely new pc architecture that does what quantum computers are supposed to do, but without the hit or miss effects of random magnetic fluxuations - the way it is designed will make the open source network perform phenomenally without reaching the 1ghz range - the data transmission method for these PC's will turn a few bytes into a string that can make many, many gigabytes.
My hope is that people will expand on the idea, stick with cb radio bands to avoid governmental b.s. without losing the advantages of multi gigahertz datastreaming via cellular/wireless internet.
The internet is just a bunch of interconnected servers/computers (given mac addresses within an ip address that acts sort of like a domain name) that are hooked together with wire - signals are relayed from one node/server/website to the next until the destination is reached and the whole handshake thing keeps the connection open.
I want the same idea applied to pirate "cell towers"/cb transmitter and reciever stations, each tower is a node that acts as the general area's router that connects to other "cb routing stations" to make an open source network grid - each device must be assigned a domain name, maybe randomize the domain name each time the device is connected and that acts as the mac address.
Each tower must have a domain name that is like the ip address - figure it as a large scale open source wifi router that is like a large local area network and the towers/routers are connected to eachother ad-hoc.
Please post some feedback and healthy discussion types of critiques that stick to the topic.

Unsure where to go or look, need help please.
I am looking for a GPS tracker to help keep an eye out on my grandma. She is a nursing home, but she tends to wander off the property and get lost with no one being able to find her.
We have been using GPS Smart Tracker, but lately is has not been working as intended. The battery life is terribly short so we have a hard time keeping an eye on her the way we wish to. We want something that we can track where she goes when she leaves the building and make sure she is safe. This tracker we have been using has not met our expectations and are constantly worried about my grandma getting lost.
If anyone has suggestions on trackers to use, I would greatly appreciate it. We are looking for something that we can check in on location either through an app, text based commands, etc... something to ensure us that she is safe and not out roaming the streets.
Thanks again Reddit!
