Can anyone in my house see what I search and do?
Yo I'm just wondering if there's anyway my parents can see what I go onto at night, and if they can see my messages. I usually use Facebook messanger to text and I always use incognito mode even if it's nothing bad I'm searching (cause it runs faster). So yeah, just wondering if there's anyway my parents can see what I go on and what I text and to who.
(I use an iPad 2nd gen that has a password, so no one can get on it, if it means anything)
Edit: I also mean if my internet has a history of everything that goes through it and if it's possible to get that info of what everybody on it's been doing

Is it possible for a flash drive to have 315MB capacity? How?
up vote 0 down vote favorite I recently came across some flash drive that is 315MB in capacity. This makes me curious because normally flash storage usually came in as 256MB or 512MB. I suspect it could be a 256MB storage unit plus a 64MB storage unit, making it 320MB in total. Is this even possible?
I ran a quick diskutil command and realized it has no hidden partition. (http://ift.tt/2djOOKX)

Older relatives that are somewhat digitally illiterate want to learn. What should they learn?
They're smart, educated, and want to learn. They know email and youtube, but not much else. There's a bit of frustration that they're being left behind. They hear and see all these tech references that they don't understand. One 80 year old just completed a class at her local Apple store. What should they learn so that they feel more comfortable with the tech world that surrounds them? Coding? How to make a web site? Edit: they play games, especially loved Angry Birds

Why is Apple getting so much flak about removing the headphone jack when Motorola did it a while ago on all USB-C phones?
I just began looking for a new phone and discovered that Motorola phones that use the new USB-C port for data/charging do not have a headphone jack and come with an adaptor so you can use your headphone with USB-C. So much for Apple's claim that they are the only company with enough courage (yes, they said that) to make the right choice and get rid of the headphone jack. Personally, I would rather have a thicker phone and a headphone jack. I hate adaptors.
I tried to discuss this in another reddit because I phrased it as a question. I guess you are not allowed to start a discussion with a question.

I've been pondering how to make passwords more secure, not sure if I've found a solution or simply don't know enough about them.
Put in a 4digit pin which acts as a variable for the equation seed. Then type in password, each submitted character is linked to a string of characters based on the equation of the given pin. Eg. Pin=6395 means a=9"r$ and A=∆~]€ Or Pin=6294 means a=84!l and A=~\2*
This would mean you could keep the current encryption systems, with an added plugin. And passwords could be immensely more complex, and even simple 4digit passwords would be difficult to crack. Since the pin would give each character millions of different meanings.
In the end, your actual password might be a string of 200 symbols, but the equation to sign in would be pin=1234, password=johnsmith this would mean you could have the same password for everything, but change the pin. Even if a hacker discovered the 200 character password, they still wouldn't have the original algorithm.
This sounds really convenient, have i missed or under thought anything?

Usb computer killer thing is a scam. Warning!
Not sure if this is right sub for this or not
So I saw the post on here about that usb stick that will kill a computer when plugged in.
So in typical fashion buying stuff I don't need I ordered one.
Well the site you order from is in China. Well wouldn't you know today I get a call from my bank saying someone tried to fraudulently use my card for $600 in China!
I don't use my card often. Last week to purchase this usb, this week it's stolen by someone in same location.
Just a warning to anyone ordering off their website, they are either stealing the cards themselves, or selling the info to someone or both. DO NOT order from there!
Luckily the charge didn't go through and the bank stopped my card and order a new one. So I'm covered.
Just a PSA

How do i download Samsung Pay on my s7 edge?
So i got a Samsung Galaxy s7 edge from amazon, it arrived 2 days ago. one of the most interesting features was Samsung pay. so i thought i just go to the play store and look up "Samsung pay" and download it. but no... it didnt show up in the searches, so i then looked it up on google chrome (on my s7) and it said "Your device isn't compatible with this version." i was kind of annoyed but then i looked it up on apkmirror and then when i downloaded it, it didn't work. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Are there any good instructional books for learning how to solder and otherwise fix/mod video game consoles?
I realize this is a really vague request, but I have no idea where to start. I'm looking for the best resources (hopefully a good straight-forward book) where I can learn to solder, replace components, and fix video game consoles. I'm hoping to find something that will start by introducing me to small projects, like soldering a new battery in a dead game cartridge, and then lead me up to the harder stuff. I'm really interested in this hobby, and I'd appreciate any advice on how to get started.

So, considering that there is still not an opensource SIM card that can be use in a easy way (excluding programming it and then building up your own mini-cell towers...) and since I need to change card soon, I was wondering if any of you knows if there is a good, honest and secure (as much as possible, at least) provider who is very good in prices for international calls and messages, has a good coverage, especially in Europe, doesn't charge you with hidden costs ann doesn't do strange things to save money, like mixing your number with many others of the person's country you are trying to contact, while you are actually trying to.. and it doesn't need you to have any kind of special contract to be signed and/otr subscribed. Any idea? (By the way, since I don't own a Nexus, we should also exclude Project Fi)
Thanks in advance

Specific Voice Isolation - CommBadge possible?
Howdy, anyone know if tech already exists for picking out a specific voice in a noisey area?
With a few modifications a regular bluetooth headset could be converted into a star trek comm badge, but unless some software can learn to isolate a specific voice in a crowded and noisey room it'll have no purpose beyond a nerd toy.
I feel that 'specific voice isolation' is on the border of being possible, so I'm really hoping someone says 'duh, its easy, amazon sell them for $10, idiot' so I can convert a phone and headset into a tricorder and commbadge combo that's actually functional :D
So, is it possible? Done and on sale? In the next 5-10 years? Anyone know?

About H1-B Programmers and Giant Evil Indian Outsourcing Companies - my experience
I have been a frequent reader of this sub, and I always found it fascinating to read stories and discussions on H1-B program or H1-B programmers here. Having been on the other side of this story, I found some of it to be truthful, some wrong, some dishonest, and most of it to be stereotypical. In most cases, the participation has always been one sided, so I thought I should share my point of view. This is not an effort to convince anyone of anything - this is about what I experienced as an H1-B migrant. Yes, I will try to make some points on what I believe to be misconceptions, but I am not writing this in defense of anything.
This may become a long post - apologies in advance if it's not your style.
A little bit on my H1-B journey: I am from India. I hold Bachelor of Engineering (undergrad) degree - but not in Computer Science. Right after my undergrad, I was picked up by one of those 'famous' Indian giant companies to be a software engineer. I was trained for 3 months in some very basic subjects of C, Unix, Databases etc. Then we did some mock projects mocking a real system and eventually started working on a real but small project where real learnings happened. I was fortunate to work with some really bright computer engineers/programmers and learned a lot that helps me even today. Eventually, I made it to the USA on H1-B program. Since then, I have been in this country for more than 10 years, have become US citizen, have a great family and a nice job. I love technology in general and programming in particular. I travel around the country whenever I get a chance. It's been good so far.
Here is my take on things I have read here or somewhere else on the contentious subject of H1-B:
On The Giant Evil Indian Outsourcing Company:
Companies such as Infosys, Wipro, TCS are not just supplying bodies to the Evil American Corporation. They take up small/big projects (may be maintenance or support project, or may be a bigger product/feature/website development project). They have some people on-site, but many more people offshore working on programming/development/coding/testing. At the same time, in a lot of cases, they could provide people to work on a client site merely as another software engineer for the client. But that’s not what makes them money, and they don’t really prefer doing it.
Most of their clients are medium to large to enterprise companies. There are some technology companies too, but big retail chains, big new york banks etc are more typical clients. They recruit freshers in big numbers. Train them for a short time in basics of programming and then are allocated to work on real projects. For a while, they perform less important/less critical tasks. But the real education do happen on these projects. They eventually become good enough to start being productive. (Those without any competence are either let go, or - if they somehow manage to wing it for a year or two - will become managers. Yes.)
These places are not easy to work at. A lot of competition. Typical rat race. To move up the ladder, you have to be a very good programmer (and a very good talker) or have a very good godfather manager to take care of you. In most cases, people don’t want to be a better programmer or learn new technologies or want to continue on technical stream. They want to become manager (project manager, product manager, bullshit manager, real manager - whatever). I think this happens because most of the employees are not naturally good at programming. They just happen to be in IT because that’s what pays.
Having said that, a really good techie can make a very successful career, if he/she is equally good at selling himself/herself. At the same time, a good programmer who isn’t good at selling himself can go through the process hell where nobody gives shit about his talents and loses creativity, passion and love for technology. Really good ones will know this early on and move out to a real technology company.
These companies have processes in place. A lot of it actually. There are a billion documents to prepare, a million of audits to go through, and a thousand standards to be certified with. While having some processes in place is a good thing, these places are nightmares for those who want to just program. They process the shit out of everybody and everything.
These companies do have some good programmers working for them. I have worked with some truly talented people. They understand tenets, nuances and principles of programming/software engineering and use it brilliantly. They are as good as a good programmer you may find in the US or anywhere. But they are not the norm. Most of the programmers are average. They follow the orders, churn out code as per requirements. They just want to get their paychecks, move up the ladder as fast as they can so they don’t have to code anymore.
On Salaries and Doing Things Illegally:
These companies, contrary to popular belief, do not really try anything illegal. In the past, they might have bent the rules like sending somebody onsite to do real work on business visa (a strict no-no), but those were exceptions then and almost never happen nowadays.
They do not pay that badly. Yes, they are not going to be paying top money, but their salaries are dictated by the laws where they can’t really exploit their employees. E.g. Around 10 years back, say a guy with 4-6 years of experience in software development might have been paid 70-80k salary working in, say, north-east region.
They do not take away anyone’s passport. Never. (This actually happens a lot with those small companies who basically promise H1-B to a lot of unfortunate graduates in India for a hefty commission, and almost everything they do is illegal, but this is definitely not true for big established companies like Infosys, TCS, CTS etc.)
They can’t and don’t prevent people from leaving and switching their employers. They try to retain such people, but not illegally - like taking their passports away or threatening them.
On Going Onsite (or Nirvana!):
Once you win H1-B lottery, the company will try ASAP to place you on-site in the states. That’s because there is a limited number of people with this visa, and there is a huge demand for them to be on-site - as project coordinators, as client-site development/maintenance/support team member, or in some cases purely to add another person to client development team. Also this is a wet dream of any Indian programmer working for these companies. The Purpose of Life. The Ultimate Goal. Nirvana. Whatever you call it.
They will board a flight, find other coworkers already settled at the destination city, arrange for a short term accommodation with them or with their help. In most cases, these companies have large number of people already onsite. So for a newcomer, it’s easy to settle in. In cases where the client is in the town of Bumblefuck and there is nobody there they know, people will still figure things out and be the torchbearer for next set of incoming people. Indians are crafty enough to figure things out.
For most people, they have two end goals for their Trip to the USA - either settle here for good, or make enough money to buy a very expensive apartment in Bangalore. So they wish for a long term project. Some people are sent only for short terms, but they too return back eventually for long term.
Few of them struggle and find difficult to adjust to new country, new culture and new people - but most of them are flexible enough to be able to continue living for long time. These companies are reluctant to file for green-cards because it's expensive to do so, but they do it for a minority of H1-B employees. If you have a good clout or a friendly manager, are good at talking, or are critical to a project, companies most likely will do it for you, but it’s not easy.
Those who are still not married or are traveling without family share accommodations - this maximizes their savings, and they don’t mind sharing a 2 bedroom apartment with three other people. India is a country of a lot of people, and we are used to be around lot of people. Granted, some of these apartments are small and crowded, but most of these people have absolutely no problem with it.
A lof of H1-B migrants do not mix well with local people, or culture. They will form their own groups within and without the office space. If there are large number of other people from their mother company at client site, they will stick to each other, go for lunches together in big groups. If and when they become comfortable at client site, they will also start behaving with more freedom and less professionally - which means talking and laughing loudly in their groups, speaking in their mother-tongues etc. They will stick to eating Indian food most/all the time. Most of them are not adventurous enough to try new cuisine. Well, other than Dominoe's. They stick to watching Indian movies. Of course they will also watch Hollywood blockbusters, but they don’t explore anything other than mainstream movies. They have absolutely no idea about local music pubs, arts or museums. They like big breaks for tea/coffee and spend time on silly talks. That’s because a lot of them have no family and have no life outside work. They spend hours at office. Even after they go home, they will have calls with offshore teams that can last until midnight. Did I mention most of them have no life outside work? They don’t. Some people are good at programming and technology, and they will stand out among other average people. If they are adventurous enough, they will get a decent job (since H1-B allows people to switch jobs). But most of them never consider that option because they have average programming skills.
My own experience as H1-B programmer:
My first project was for a big bank, where I started on the project at off-shore, in India, and was eventually sent onsite when I had my H1-B.
It was a charged environment where there was already a lot of anger against people like me among the programmers and other employees at the client company. I didn’t know any of that, until I started noticing odd behaviors of people. (Note: People on H1 visa at the client site are almost always treated as second class citizens - partially because they don’t try to mix well with local employees, partially because of a huge cultural divide, but mainly because they are a threat to local employment. Even when there isn't any loss of jobs with local employees, they are always suspicious. I don’t find this surprising, but it’s not a good experience for any of the two parties.)
I moved onto a different client, different team, had a much pleasant experience, was welcome to the client team, but always worked on shitty projects. I did my best in whatever work I did, impressed my colleagues and client managers and kept at it - until I got a green-card (not through my employer, but with a different route of family sponsorship).
I quit as soon as I could, found a much better job with more challenging and satisfying work, and haven’t looked back since.
I consider myself a very good programmer, have loved doing what I do and would wnat to continue doing it for as long as I can. My job pays well, I have traveled a lot, have made many friends from all parts of life, and have settled in well.
I find this country and people to be very friendly, very accommodating and fun. There are a thousand things to do outside work, and I engage in a lot of them.
I can go on, but I think this should give some idea of life of H1-B programmers and the Evil Indian Companies who send them here.
I can answer questions if people are interested. I will stick to what I know as objectively as possible, but in the end, they are just my opinions and my experience.
TLDR: Big Indian Outsourcing Tech Companies are not as evil as they are made out to be. A typical H1-B programmer from India is most likely average at his/her work. Some are really good at their work. I was one of these programmers. I have done pretty well overall - have settled down here for good and love being a programmer working with cool people.

Found chips/virus in generic USB cable?!
First, sorry for bad english – french fag here ;)
Hi,
I've purchased some months ago a cheap usb power banks (cost me less than 10€), that comes with a micro usb to usb cable.
It worked fine with a usb charger (one that comes with my iPhone, a palm usb charger and a amazon fire charger), but some times ago i plugged in in my macbook pro, it charge but the cable apperead as a mountable disk (?!).
So i copied all the files inside and i found this: http://ift.tt/2cgo1xN
I tried opening the .exe and .inf files but it gives me an error
So i tried opening the cable, i used knife and others tools to open the cable from the big usb part, and i found chips inside:
I searched on internet but it seems that normally usb cables doesn't have chips inside, plus it was a really cheap cable.
I'm not a tech guy so if some peoples can helps me it will be great, so thanks :)

Why Apple is in a bubble.
So, here is the thing. Can we take a moment to analyze all of Apples products over the last few years.
The new MacBook: 1 USB type C cable so you need more adapters from Apple. Magic Mouse: You can't use it iPad Pro: Now Hybrid MacOS Apple Pen: You can't charge it on a backpack and it rolls off everything. Battery Case: Looks hideous and feels awkward in the pocket. Apple Watch: Barely any functionality and not reasonable for athletes. Apple Watch Gold: Let's be real. How many people do you think bough it? iPhone 6s: Force touch is cool but it was a failed president. No company really followed along since it isn't needed. Airpods: Wasted phones battery with Bluetooth, too easy to loose and you can only listen for 5 hours. iPhone 7: No headphone port, and you need an adapter. Apple banks on the fact that people will loose that tiny thing and buy loads of new ones. Same design.
So, here is the thing. Why do we just accept things when Apple does it? They never listen to their Fanboys and didn't even have a twitter until 4 days ago! What do they bank on? They do something ridiculous and try to get insane amounts of media attention (reminds me of Trump). This eventually results in sales...
So many main question is? How long do you think they can keep this up for? I wonder...
Cheers!

Apple taking away the headphone jack from the iPhone 7 is just like Microsoft taking away the start menu from Windows 8.
When Microsoft decided to remove the old fashioned start menu back in 2012 on the Windows 8 operating system, one of the reasons was supposedly that "nobody used the start menu anyway." Therefore, it was logical to remove it to make the operating system "more modern." The result, as everyone knows, was catastrophic, and led to the old start menu being reintroduced in Windows 10.
The traditional headphone jack was probably removed from the iPhone 7 for similar reasons. Supposedly, everyone is already using Bluetooth headphones, right? Well, now iPhone 7 users will either have to buy the new EarPods, or an adapter to the lightning port, neither of which are cheap.
“Now, some people have asked why we would remove the analog headphone jack from the iPhone,” Schiller began. “It really comes down to one word: courage. The courage to move on, do something new, that betters all of us. And our team has tremendous courage.” Quote from: http://ift.tt/2ctPnlN
This is why I think we might be seeing Apple going down a similar road as Microsoft...

Adaptive refreshrate monitor feature suggestion: 4k video resampling method
Hi all, not sure what to do with this idea but maybe someone here can help.
I just finished watching the Mass Effect promo (4k youtube stream) on my 1080p 144Hz gsync monitor. Obviously, I wasn't getting the full experience by down-sampling the 4k stream to 1080p and displaying it at (effectively) 30 fps. This is because the monitor tech/drivers are wasting 3/4 of the information in the stream.
Instead, why not display the video at 120 Hz where each frame displays one of the four 4k pixel values contained within each 1080p pixel? (1234)(1234)(1234), etc... 30 times per second. This procedure should apply a temporal-based anti-aliasing effect in rendered streams, as well as providing slightly smoother motion.
Anything wrong with this idea? Would love input.

Will the tech bubble burst? If so, who will be profiting off of it?
What do you guys think about the talks of the tech bubble bursting? I'm a student currently studying Computer Science, and I'm genuinely curious on where I'll be once I graduate with my degree in 2 years. And I'm even more curious (maybe this is more of an economics question), about who will profit off of the tech bubble bursting.

Any plattforms for co-creation online?
Context: We are working towards becoming an accelerator for young businesses, with a focus on sustainability and innovation. Our company is named Young Sustainable Impact - we had 20 people under 20 years from 16 countries creating four ideas at our first "conference/workshop" july 2016. Two of the teams are getting into action and forward after the first two months, while we still work on getting the others to move forward.
To choose the next 20-40 people to join our accelerator we`re looking to improve our method of picking out people, with online-co-creation. Our goal is to get at least a thousand people involved in discussions on ideas, come with ideas or deconstruct existing solutions, based on the 17 sustainability goals.
Can anyone recommend any platforms for this purpose?

Whatever happened to smart washing machines?
I stumbled upon this TechCrunch article, titled "Your washing machine should be smarter about washing clothes than you are " (http://ift.tt/2ckdT7C).
It presents a prototype showed off by Hoover Europe at IFA this week, which "offers some potentially compelling steps toward a day when our washing machines will work with us more than they do against us."
This article got me thinking, and I would appreciate your input on this - how come in 2016, the whole area of washing machines is still so under-developed?

/R/tech Exploits of Barcodes (how they suck ass at security)
Exploits of a Barcode (how the suck ass at security)
Barcodes are some of the most interesting things i have ever researched, you can quickly ID a product, tell how much money its worth and charge a customer, or you could say this item belongs on this shelf or this book goes in this section, etc. Now all that seems cool and very useful but you can also use Barcodes to reset or “hack” (I use this term very lightly) a system.
Barcodes A barcode is a machine readable (a format readable by computers basically) representation of data, that normally states something about what it is on such as books, store products, produce etc. There are two types of Barcodes 1D and 2D. 1D displays information using the spaces and widths on it, while 2D the later version of Barcodes yous more complex patterns (but that is not relevant). Now all that's well and good but after all humans don't read Barcodes, computers do, and computers use code, have command keys, and certain things that the system must follow due to their programming.
Now let's get into the fun stuff, exploiting the computer’s programming and command keys through a simple piece of paper, a Barcode to be exact. The process which the Barcode is scanned, goes like this: “person A” scans a barcode into a scanner, the scanner takes that information and inserts it to a computer, computer reads said information, computer lists said information, “person A” pays and takes their product and leaves. Now we are going to do this same process but just not in the same way. If you do a simple web search of Barcode configuration you should be able to get a PDF’s of Barcode user's manual’s or just click this link to one from opticon, and then you just use that to screw with there system. But that way is to easy, to limiting, we want more control. Most Barcode scanners are just glorified keyboards, which mean they can send key commands threw to their main operating system or OS. Most of the OS’s are Windows Vista and 95 or just older Windows OS’s in general, which means they have command keys such as the Windows key or the ESC key. That means you can just scan in ctrl-alt-esc or ctrl-esc or any other key command known to that OS, you get the basic idea you could also just restart the computer that way to. Now you can't just scan the letters Ctrl-Esc the scanner wouldn't be able to read that, you would have to convert your commands into a Barcode. You can do that by just using free software or just using a web program (software is mostly better though). When you are writing the commands you must make sure you have the barcode formated to the correct type of Barcode format. We are going to use UPC-A because my research tells me that it is a majority of store’s use (you should do your own research, links below). Once you have written your Barcode you can print it and if you have done everything right the machine should read it and carry out the command. And that brings me back to the barcode process remember? “person A” scans a Barcode into a scanner, the scanner takes that information and inserts it to a computer, computer reads said information, computer lists said information, “person A” pays and takes their product and leaves. Well basicly it's still the same except this time “person A” scans Barcode, Barcode closes that program, you walk out knowing you just gave the manager a huge headache for about half an hour.
What this all means Basicly what I am trying to say is that you should be able to use Barcodes to restart or tamper with a program, enter commands into a computer’s OS, or basically anything you want that involves a Barcode and commands. In the past some hackers have even installed malware onto the OS using Barcodes and gotten information from it. But I am not saying you should attempt any of this because well it's illegal but the concept is still very interesting(obviously this paper was for educational purposes).
I hope that you were able to learn something from this, and happy researching it took me long enough.
