Amperage needed to melt through a nail?
Sorry if there's an "ask tech" sort of sub, but...
How many volts or amps would you roughly estimate it would take to melt a nail in half? I'm thinking of this being done by simply attaching the leads of a DC battery or power source to either end of the nail. (Actually, might AC work better?). Thx.

Can I use an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) as a Transformer?
American living in Italy here. I have a lot of 110v electronics, and Italy uses 220.
The transformers I use draw (and waste) a lot of energy, so I was thinking I could use an UPS instead.
Is this viable?

iPhone 6 screen is popping up from frame.
Alright, I have no idea if this is an easy fix or something I just want to hear some of your ideas.
So it started one time in school, I had not checked my phone "carefully" in the morning but when I had class I was bored because I knew mostly all that we talked about. And I noticed something was off, the display had popped up just a little bit around the volume buttons, I didn't think of it much and pushed it back, but it popped up on it's own just a little later.
Now this just happened out of nowhere because I just noticed it without dropping it or something. Now a couple of days later it has just been worse, the whole left side is basically up about half a centimeter in an arch shape. If i try to push it down with some power the other side is starting to pop out as well so I try not to do anything. So now the question, what should I do? I have realized that the glue is not working properly as it should and yes, I know that iPhone is a terrible brand when it comes to phones but I got it from my dad as a gift since my old one was broken. I am planning on buying a new phone once I start working in about a week (Samsung of course since iPhones haven't been the best for me) but I figured it could be dangerous with the screen not in place.
TL;DR: Screen coming off of screen more and more, what to do?

What's the Best Free Video Editing Software for Mac?
(I'm not sure if this fits the Subreddit rules, but I'm hopeful that it is. I see the rules as being too unspecific for me to dictate whether this post is allowed or not. Oh well.)
I was wondering what the best free video editing software was for free that you could get on Mac. I have iMovie, but I wanted to do more complex things with masking that are convenient and simple (just for fun though, so I don't want to pay). FYI my mother's computer does have an old edition of Adobe Premiere that I'm pretty sure was pirated, but I'd like to use something that's less outdated if possible. I'm running OSX Yosemite v 10.10.5, although I'm pretty sure that won't make a difference. Should I just stick with Adobe Premiere and iMovie, or are there more intuitive options out there?

New built PC, no monitor picture
So i just bought some new parts and completed the build, but when i pressed the power button i wouldnt get any picture from my monitor. I've tried to remove one of the ram sticks but no luck there either, I also removed the GPU and connected my monitor to the motherboard and still no picture. I've checked every cable and made sure it's connected properly, the fans and everything start spinning but no picture. Any ideas?(might be the wrong sub but I don't use Reddit very often)

Web Forum & website Ideas
With my hosting plan I am able to host multiple websites. I am toying with multiple ideas already, but I am only one person, and as such can only come up with ideas in a very narrow scope. What are some web forums or web sites that are severely lacking, either in recourses, content or traffic that you would like to see more of, either in the form of a general website, or community web forum?

[DISCUSSION] Do you think this generation of kids could be the first in a while to be less tech competent than their parents?
Hopefully that question makes sense, but I'll try to explain what I mean.
Over the last several decades, each generation has grown up with an increasing amount of technology incorporated into their lives. The trend, therefore, has been that each generation has become more and more competent operating computers and other electronic devices than the last. But I feel that this current generation (kids born in the 2000's and later) may break that trend. My reason for thinking this is mostly due to the improvements that have been made in user interfaces. When I was growing up (in the 90's), I was surrounded by technology from a very young age, but I feel that devices and software during that time were significantly less user friendly and more difficult to operate. It required me to develop a deeper understanding of the programs I was using, beyond just the menu screens. When I watch my nieces and nephews use an iPad, though, it's quite a different experience. Everything is bold and colorful. Navigation is a breeze, and malfunctions and crashes are extremely rare. Everything is very intuitive, and all just works how it should. There are apps developed specifically for kids that take only a few minutes for them to learn how to use.
In addition to devices, I've seen a similar phenomenon with video games. In the past, there weren't many games made specifically for young children. When I was 4 years old, I was playing all the games my 15 year old brother was playing. It took a while to learn how to play these games, but we did it. Because it was all that we had. Today, there are thousands of games made for kids even as young as 2. They're fun and cheap, and kids love them. But I don't believe they exercise the technical parts of the brain like "adult" games do.
I'm curious to hear some of your thoughts.
TL;DR: OP patted his generation on the back and criticized the younger generation for having it too easy. Where have we seen that before? :)

Free Degree of Computer Science using MIT OpenCourseware
I want to create a study team to do the MIT Challenge. I created a curriculum of 180 credits and I'm thinking in achieve it in 1 year and somethink like two months. I can help you in all you need related to this, the schedule, books, etc. There's a slack team where we all share. (THIS IS JUST FOR KNOWLEDGE, MIT IS NOT GOING TO GIVE YOU A REAL DEGREE)
EDIT 15/04/2017 Link to the curriculum that I made: MIT CHALLENGE CURRICULUM
What I did before starting and some tips: 1) I planned it for a month due to several things. I'm from Venezuela and I have my own company. I live of the money that I make. So I bringed a friend to my company and make him a business partner with the condition that he has to do all the work. This was perfect since I'm doing 8 hours per day of study. 2) Another thing that is important and people forget it; a good CHAIR. If you're going to spend 8 hours every day, 4 hours on weekend, a good chair is an important thing and not just a furniture. 3) I made a lot of noise of what I was about to do with my friends and family in order to make this challenge a real thing and keep a little of pressure on me. 4) Economic situation here in my country is ugly, so it's not common to have your own house, even if you have money. So I live with my family and they make a lot of noise, luckily for me, my house is not small and I fixed a room-garage just for studying and work. 5) I study an intensive week of pre-calculus before starting just to remember some math that I forgot
Are you suited for this? *People who is interested in Computer Science *People with time to learn Computer Science, this may not be a formal degree but you should take it like one *People with discipline *People friendly and willing to collaborate *People wanting to be tech-entrepeneurs
What do you need? *A computer, basically any computer will work. *Time for spend 6-9 hours a day depending on your effort *A good chair to spend those hours *Will!
A little thing about me: I studied Philosophy first and then Economics in college, I never finished none of them. I started my own company and that was my life three years until now. I always hated school and college, but I never hated to learn. So I started to see that I didn't need the traditional educational system to learn. That's when I heard about the MIT CHALLENGE done by Scott H Young. Inspired by him, I made my own curriculum and my own structure on how to accomplish this, I'm going to write later some rules that I made for this.
The rules that I made to give some structure (Test mode):
1)12 hours/credit on every subject, MIT recommend 14 hours/credit. Scott H. Young did 6 hours/credit
2) If you don't understand something you may go to a prior subject in order to understand the premise.
3) It is supposed that a subject with 12 credits (like most of them) should be done in 3 weeks, working on them 8 hours monday to friday and 4 hours each day of the weeknd, to a weekly total of 48 hours and a 3 weeks total of 144 hours. If something unexpected happens you can rearrange your time to compensate this in other days, but the total hours should be done in 3 weeks with just a few extraordinary exceptions. It is to be seen if this methodology will work.
4)If Rule #3 is broked, you will have 5 days more to finish the total hours, but with a new total of 14 hours per credit to a total of 168 hours in a 12 credit subject
5) You should have at least 180 credits when you're done (This is what MIT consider a Major). This could be consider that the Major is complete (If there's no a thesis or final project)
6) (It is to be seen if it is possible to have a few days free between the subjects)
7) The general way to test your knowledge will be through the final exam if this is possible. If you fail in this test you will have two days to study for a similar test gain, and this way so on if the resources allowed it. It is to be seen what would happen if the resources are not available.
Two days ago I started with my first subject, Introduction To Computer Science and Programming in Python. I'm going to test if it's possible to finish this first subject within the time that should be done and if I can keep with the hours per day. I'm starting to see that the feedback when you're doing programming problems would be nice with another students. Note: I want to add that my native language is NOT english, so there are things that are a little harder for me to understand while studying than to a native english speaker.
Note 2: I want to clarify that many of the subjects are electives that you can choose.

Play YouTube video from API to my website
I am trying to create a service where I can feed my selection of YouTube from an YouTube API. I want to create a kind of Pocket for videos where all the videos you and I "save for later" (on the web or in app), show up in a website, iOS app and Android app.
To make the system easier to develop someone recommended doing a REST API server.
Where and how should I start? I have no experience doing any of this

Proposal to solve the watch battery problem
Instead of needing to constantly buy new ones, design a watch battery which works with existing watches. Integrate inductive charging into this battery. The battery should be NiMH-LSD, because they have very low self discharge (hence the LSD). Or maybe it should be one of those fancy ultra-capacitors. This might mean that I would need to charge once a week or month, but the cell inside would last even longer than a conventional NiMH/Li Ion battery would, probably for many decades. Remember, we're talking about retro-fitting this into existing watches here, not smartwatches, that is the key.
Now, sell this special battery with a charging pad that I plug into a USB port. Occasionally, I just drop the conventional watch on the pad for a night, and I'm good to go. No more buying this disposable shit, and no more paying jewelers to get them changed for me.
Why hasn't someone done this?

In light of increased government demands for mobile devices, would it be plausible to see mobile devices that offer secondary home screens upon use of an alternate password?
Title.
Example: Journalist or whistleblower is trying to leave Syria or North Korea gets stopped at border, and he mobile device and password is demanded.
Individual gives border control a password that opens a separate or partitioned OS without any visible incriminating information.
Individual is free to go.
Obviously, more digging could expose that it is a second OS, but general review shouldn't expose any information.
Any chance we could see this on iOS?

Xb1 Elite controller power issue
Recently my bumper on my elite controller broke. I saw a post on Reddit that said the same thing happened and they replaced it for cheap and it was pretty easy. Well I did that, got the parts, and replaced them today. The bumper will click in and work fine (I assume) but once I reassembled it the power won't come on. I had to really press on some areas for it to turn on. Once it turned on when I applied a little bit of torque ( just to text the integrity of the power) it went off. When I press the power button it is very dimly lit. I was fairly gentle through the whole process and can't recall anything going wrong. It seems like when it's fully assembled there is a small gap at the bottom between the face plate and bottom of the controller near the 3.5 jack. I could use some help since I don't want to buy another one. Has anyone had this issue or have any ideas? Thanks!

Postintelligence.ai not writing to Twitter account?
I have very much enjoyed using postintelligence.ai - I don't have a commercial twitter account or anything, but it was fun looking at how it tried to predict the popularity of posts and scheduling times etc.
I get a message 'Post failed. Application cannot perform write actions. Contact Twitter Platform Operations through (weblink)'
Is this likely to just be my account or have twitter taken away the ability of postintelligence to post to twitter accounts completely?

A more efficient program
Is it possible to make software more efficient? It is certainly possible to make hardware that is more powerful, but hear me out for a moment. If the software that we generally use is inefficient, then all of the software that is based on it is also a factor, and orders of magnitude more inefficient than that. Why does this effect you, The reader? Well there has to be not only a hardware solution for the technological solutions of the future, but a software revolution as well. Why all of this you ask? Think about it, if we continue building hardware without concerning ourselves with space requirements for the data we create with it then we will have a digital landfill problem. The idea is to better use the resources that we already have, and find better ways to re-use old ones. Ok, so on to the fun stuff. How do we do this? Let's say that I want to represent two things digitally, it's all in 1,0 right? It's so simplex that there is no real way to make it smaller, lighter or faster, right? Wrong, for every 1,0 there will exist the eventuality that a string of 1,0 will match another somewhere else or possibly even at the same time, and the data is indistinguishable from each other ex, 1001010, and let's say a fragment of a picture you are sending to a relative, also represented by 1001010. While this doesn't seem to pose a problem, we can actually use this to reduce both sets of data, so that instead of that string being held in two places, taking up space, we can keep it referenced, from a single fast connection point, and both can be used for either purpose, freeing up space, memory, and programming time. How you ask? Very clever code. I'm going to be releasing said code sometime soon to the public, and it will make current hardware, legacy, and otherwise, about a factor of 10 more powerful/efficient. Anon

Any future tech to solve Wi-Fi in a House of Concrete & Steel
My parent's house is built like a bunker. It's pretty much built to withstand the toughest hurricanes, earthquakes, etc...
Of course, the obvious downside now that they've gotten a taste for the internet is that wifi signals don't go too far. They've had 4 consultants come out, and nada. Everyone agrees that even extenders don't do much at all.
In fact, they now have 2 different wifi networks, 1 for each floor. Yes, they pay basically double, and tech support often gets confused when 1 of the networks goes down, since they don't assume a single home has 2 networks. Even then, the routers are strategically placed to maximize its reach of computers & tv's, but ultimately don't even reach half the floor (e.g., 1st floor wifi reaches living room & 1 room but doesn't reach kitchen).
So, what am I ultimately asking? They're worried that in the future of smart homes w/ smart bulbs, amazon echo's, and such, the house will lose its value regardless of its location, value, etc...
Is there some future tech. in the horizon we're unaware of that would i dunno.... solve our specific issue?
Thanks in advance for any insight.

Why I think pre-release reviews are bad [DISCUSSION]
We all have watched people getting their phones early on YouTube. Like, say for example, Unbox Therapy today, he got the Galaxy S8 and S8+ today, well, let me tell you a few reasons why these reviews don't make any sense.
- Pre-release phones have beta software.
The software on pre-release phones is good, and 'snappy' as the YouTubers say they are. But, for the average consumer, if you got a pre-release phone, it may have some bugs, and some stuff that the manufacturer hasn't ironed out yet. This is a big problem with YouTubers who review phones before they come out.
- Pre-release phones have zero optimization with apps.
Well, it's this little key detail that shows with YouTubers. They say that the "bezels" are still there with the YouTube experience, well, the problem is, YouTube hasn't yet implemented a quality option for that aspect ratio of phones on the Galaxy S8. I'm sure that apps that don't recognize the hardware (I.e Geekbench 4, AnTuTU, and etcetera) and give out inaccurate test results on the unrecognized hardware.
- Last minute changes to hardware or software
Software, or hardware could change at the last second between the span of making a pre-release video of the phone, and the actual experience of the shipped consumer model. So, this, in fact makes the pre-release videos invalid with the changes. The keys on the S8 could change over time, or something else could be moved at the last second.
Conclusion:
We should watch these pre-release reviews on YouTube, but, they should only be taken with a grain of salt, because the videos are “pre-release models” you can't truly know what features a phone has until it comes out completely, and everything is optimized for it. We should all think about these videos and how they will affect our views on the product. That's cool that you got the phone and all, but, is it really practical for the average everyday consumer?
Discussion:
How do you view the pre-release videos of phones? Do you think it's something you'd want to buy when it comes out? Do you think it's a video only to get hype on the phones?

Ask neural networks are your photo awesome or not? We need your feedback
Some time ago we trained neural networks to see the beauty of photos like professionals do. And today Aesthetics test can say is your photo awesome or not and describe the objects shown in the photo.
I’m writing this post because of several reasons: 1.We are looking for feedback to make our AI works better. 2. We need more samples with good and bad photos for our training dataset .
Please check how it works http://ift.tt/2mNJiqh You may live your feedback here or drop me a line at kris@everypixel.com

Smart phones need to stop getting bigger
Seriously smartphones these days are getting on my nerves. Why in the hell are they still getting bigger? The way technology has progressed, it makes it hard to actually want something older because it will be slow and probably very unsupported by developers. I'd love a phone with a physical keyboard and actual buttons but is that going to happen? No. They dropped the keyboards a little while back and now they're all getting rid of buttons for more screen space? Just buy a god damn tablet! And I know, the newer phones aren't bigger they just take up more space on the device but on-screen buttons sound terrible and I'd never buy a phone with them. Most people still use autocorrect because touch screen typing is difficult, I absolutely hate typing on it. Not to mention my job is getting rid of the devices with physical keyboards and going to start using all touch based ones based on android systems. I would seriously rather buy a full qwerty keyboard phone with the screen being touch enabled if anyone was still making them.

The Best Alternative to Slack For Your Team
Are you looking for a better, more productive alternative to Slack? Slack is the most popular of the collaboration tools, but is it really the best one? It was created to make communication inside teams easier with team chat streams. Slack has indeed been a great tool for communication. Team members can discuss together way better than over email. Importantly, it helps with brainstorming and sharing information easily. But that’s basically it. Really, Slack looks a lot like Facebook Messenger - but you can actually even do video calls on Facebook Messenger.
If you want to go from talk to action, you might want to try out the best Slack alternative: Hibox. To make your team more productive, you need more features that actually help you get things done, not just annoying integrations that distract you and crowd your chat stream. Here are the Hibox features that make it the productive alternative to Slack:
Integrated videoconferencing: when you are chatting with your coworkers and you need to do a video call, you don’t have to log in to another tool like Skype and wait for everybody to be connected. It is easier, faster and more efficient, saving you time and money. Less noise: there are less meaningless notifications from numerous integrated apps, your team isn’t constantly disturbed and you can stay focused on your work.
It’s easier to track productivity: track the time your team members spend on tasks and analyze what is working and what is not. Live support in English 24/7: so whenever you need help, you and your team will get an answer right away.
AI virtual assistant: This tool recognizes which of your messages you want to create a task from and automatically suggests it for you. You can create tasks right in the chat stream. Soon, your personal assistant will be able to assign tasks to the members who have the least tasks or who have done similar tasks, saving you time and maximizing productivity.
This is key: All this is half the cost!
Again, if you only need a communication platform for a non-stop group chat, sure, Slack is perfect. But if you want your team to achieve goals and increase productivity,, Slack is not your tool. You need something with more efficient features to help you get things done well. Usually with Hibox, a team saves up to 80% of their time managing tasks our way. This all-in-one tool helps teams save time, energy and money when organizing projects and tasks.

Kodi Dependencies issues
Hey ya'll.
So I just installed Kodi on my Apple Tv 4 and trying to setup Exodus. I've done it plenty on Firesticks and Android OS TVs, but can't seem to get it to work. Kodi is perfectly fine. I setup Fusion, setup the Exodus zipfile, but when I go to install from repositories I get an error ""The dependency on script.module.metahandler version...".
I did a bunch of crap. Installed Indigo, tried to download the addon from there but it just failed as well.
