Apple apparently bricking cameras after third party repairs.

It sort of comes as a kicker to me (well not really) that Apple, after talking so much about the environment and saving on card board, and also providing authorisation to third parties to repair their products; Apple is now bricking iPhone 12 camera modules if someone not authorized by Apple attempts a repair.

This is especially concerning since I saw a tweet from someone showing that their iPhone 12 camera glass broke on its own.

This; after the whole lightning to type c cable issue, really makes me thing that Apple really doesn't care about the green on the land but instead the green in their pockets.

The thing that worries is me that- while other brands are mocking Apple for things such as the charger- they might follow suit for the same, and maybe even the third party repair restrictions if it is true; as they did with headphone jacks and notches.

The five American technology giants – Amazon, Apple, Alphabet, Facebook, and Microsoft – have come a full circle from revolutionising the world to becoming the biggest companies in the history of mankind to emerging as a threat to the very fabric of modern society in recent times. The menace of fake news, the invasion of privacy, the alleged influence in election outcomes, and the problem of addiction to social media have a common root in the meteoric success of the Big Tech firms.

More recently, the issue of antitrust has been added to that list – not for the first time in the history of technology companies, however. A bipartisan antitrust panel in the US House of Representatives questioned the chief executives of Amazon, Apple, Alphabet and Facebook earlier this year and last week Google was slapped with the biggest antitrust case in a generation. The company faces a long road ahead of itself to prove that it is not unfairly dominating the online search engine space.

I saw this youtube tech review video where they reviewed this laptop with a 144hz display and they can get more than 200fps on certain games. But if the display is 144hz, isn't the maximum framerate of the laptop going to be 144fps? How does it exceed that limit then?

I hade my s20 for couple of days now and i really can't tell the difference between the it and my s8, are the apps not optimised or something I'd say my s20 is a less laggy around the ui but thats probably because it's a newer phone The scrolling feels a little better but would I have to look very hard to notice the difference

Strange Frame on YouTube and searches.network???

So recently I've been having this strange pop up instead of my usual Chrome, called searches.network I've been trying to remove it however I can, (I removed a profile in settings but it was still there) and I tried scanning my computer for a virus with malwarebytes but there was still nothing. And today I have this strange bar (it's kind of like the url bar but a second one????) on the top of my youtube. Though I don't know if it's because of the searches.network or if it's because today my school website started having weird pop ups as well.

I’am an old fan for apple iphones since iphone 4g, now i own an iphone 8 plus, but when i saw iphone 12 I was surprised by how apple got so weak and how they’re trying to get money in horrible ways First thing i dont think apple is bringing back the iphone 5s design i think apple couldn’t make the components thin, apple introduced the 5G but it was clearly not enough so they made this magsafe thing which is USELESS so the only 2 new things (for iphones only of course) they introduced are the ceramic shield and the camera night mode, and besides all of that they removed the charger and the headphones And i’am very mad at apple rn and i’am here to know if i’am the only one who thinks like this because i feel like everyone likes the new iphone Please give me your thoughts

Restore deleted data from unallocated space on Android phone that is over a year old, possible?

How quickly is unallocated deleted data overwritten on an Android or IPhone usually? Like is it possible to restore, for example, a photo album that I deleted on accident nearly 2 years ago from my phone? Or is this data most likely overwritten by now?

VR Set for Present

Hi - I don't even know if this is the right place for this, so please feel free to point me away (preferably to the right place, if you know it) if it isn't right, but here goes:

My mother is interested in getting my father a VR set for his phone for Christmas and wanted me to research some to see if there was a good one for him. The kicker? He's 74, has Alzheimer's, can't learn new tricks very easily and isn't great with tech to begin with (gets frustrated easily). However, he loves learning new things when the barrier to learning is relatively low and he likes to think that he is a little tech-savvy (even if he isn't), so we know that he'd at least be interested in a VR set.

I don't really know where to begin on this for him. The only experiences that I have had have been with full-on sets, not ones that use cell phones. I would really appreciate any advice or guidance that I can get!

Oh, as for things that he'd be interested in, I would say anything military-related (he's ex-Army), or something that would let him experience things in this world (i.e., he's not interested in aliens or anything like that).

Does anyone know a photo storage app linked with gmail that stores photos quick and has an album feature?

Storage is very tight rn and I’m someone who takes screenshots for everything lmao. I don’t want to do iCloud since I share it with my family and it’s full. I want an app that could be linked with gmail so I don’t loose them and quickly stores photos, having an album feature would really be amazing since I want to organize my pictures.

Processor Update Question

Hello guys.

Last year I have bought an Asus Tuf Gaming FX705 laptop. It has 16 GB of ram, GeForce GTX 1660 Ti and a ''Ryzen 7 3750H with Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx, 2300 Mhz, 4 core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s).

I played a lot of different games on it such as War Thunder (high graphic), Fortnite (ultra graphics), Rocket league (max graphics), CSGO (high graphics), ETS 2 (max graphics), GTA 5 (max graphics)... and none of them caused me any issues. It was always 40+ FPS, mostly 55 on average.

However in December last year I decided to install Call of Duty Warzone. I downloaded it, got in, everything was working fine. The game has very good graphics my fps was mostly hanging around 30-40 fps but since it was still playable it didn't bother me at all.

One day I entered the game and my game just dropped down to 10 FPS on average. I immediately knew that my graphics card wasn't updated and went to install the update. After installing the update I restarted my laptop and went back into the game. (This happened every time I had to upgrade my graphics card). However this time my game didn't go back to it's usual 30-40 FPS, but it stood at 20-Max and very rarely 30 FPS. I though it had to do something with my graphics card so I decided to lower the graphics, but for some reason that didn't help at all. After a couple of tries I decided to give up and deleted the game.

Just a couple days ago I installed it again and started experiencing the same issue but with my FPS dropping even lower to 15-25 FPS. I tried looking at how my components were doing and the biggest issue seemed to be my processor since it was always at 100% usage and around 98C.

After that I started thinking of upgrading my processor but decided to firstly ask for help on here.

My questions are:

1. Is it possible to upgrade Processor on this laptop?
2. Which upgrade would be the best?
3. Is there something else I should do or upgrade?

If you want to know something more feel free to ask me. Also please do not write in the comments that I should build a gaming pc because I really have no space for that.

My computer won't open

I don't even know if this is the right subreddit but I really need help. I need to finish a project today and the deadline is tomorrow so I need to fix it now.

It started when the screen split in two(never happened before) while I was using a drawing program (about 250 mb). I could still move the mouse but I thought I should shut it down and open it again.

It then said it had a problem and need to restart because the system wasn't working.

So I waited and it won't open and the screen is blank but the power button is on.

DXR support on GTX 1650 (Mobile)?

So i was going through some forums and i found couple cases where people brought a laptop with v414 driver on a GTX 1650 mobile laptop even though it isnt supported in this version. Now this let those users utilize DXR with poor framerates of course but it supported and the ray-tracing options in Control weren't grayed out. So can anyone tell any way to install DXR API on a GTX 1650 mobile. Like some Modded drivers or something like that.

What happens to stuff like screen resolution within the next ten years?

A TV for example. The jump from 1080p to 4K is absolutely crazy. The jump from 4K to 8K is pretty cool. Next up is probably 10K or something, but I simply don't see a reason to upgrade past that point. Even 8K is so good that I can't make up any pixels when being really close to the TV. So are we just gonna be stuck at 10K or something like that soon and then the TVs just keep upgrading in other areas?

Same with phones. I feel like soon, the cameras are so good that it isn't even worth it to pay extra for the better camera anymore. I think the same thing applies to many other kinds of tech just within the next decade.

What do you think will happen?

What’s the point of 120Hz display in phones or tablets if most content is filmed at 24Hz ?

I just don’t get why some people care about display refresh rate on smartphones; most content comes at 24 Hz or maybe at max 60Hz. Why is this a selling point?. If the phone refreshes the screen 2 to 5 times with the exact same image in it does it even make a difference except draining your battery.

How to learn computer science and technology in general as a high schooler?

I am currently in high school and have spent a few months learning Python, of which I know the basics quite well. However, I don't really know that much more about computers (how they work, in-depth details, etc.) or technology in general and wonder how I can really learn computer science and as said technology by myself. I was thinking about learning C next, as it is lower level than Python, and afterwards start learning actual computer science (as CS isn't only programming obviously).

The courses CS50 and CS101 seem interesting, which I might take. Afterwards I'll probably learn some more advanced topics, for which I found a website called TeachYourselfCS (not sure if it's good). I am especially interested in simulations, game development, cybersecurity and AI, so after learning something I can do projects which apply these learned topics to something in these fields (for example do CTFs, create some game, write some machine learning algorithm, etc.). Obviously mathematics are also very important, which I am planning on learning in tandem to these other topics with Khan Academy, MIT OCW or some textbook. I found the course nand2tetris and the YouTube channel beneater, which I don't know if it's enough to learn about hardware. I am sure Physics is important for simulations and game development too, which I plan on learning with some textbooks after learning the necessary math.

How can I learn learn what I said in the title (if you know a better way/path than what I currently am planning on doing and what else should I learn and how, like for example computer engineering)? What resources do you recommend (if you know any which you think are better than those I mentioned)? How exactly would you go on to learning all of this (techniques, etc.)? Another question, how to learn about new, emerging technologies, such as robotics, nanotechnology, 3D printing, and similar?

Won't Big Tech's cloud services eventually outrival smaller cloud companies (Akamai, Cloudflare, Fastly, etc)?

I have this same question.

1. Given enough time, won't Big Tech's cloud services (namely Amazon, Microsoft, and Google) outrank or overtake these smaller cloud companies and offer the same services?

2. How do these smaller cloud companies differ? How did they even crop up into existence? I'm dumbfounded Big Tech didn't acquire them when they were starting to crush them. Why haven't Big Tech acquired them now?

What do you think of this idea?

My friends and I have always had problems when planning date night with our partners. Whether we're married, in long term relationships or just casually dating, it's always been a issue.

It goes down something like this:

Jack: what do you wanna do for date night?

Jill: Idk, what do you want to do?

Jack: Ok lets go to an Italian restaurant and then bowling in the city?

Jill: Uggh.. we had Italian last week. What about Greek?

Jack: No, I had that for lunch yesterday. Ummm… ok lets have a Turkish dinner and then go mini golf?

Jill: No.... I don’t feel like Turkish

Jack: *frustrated losing his mind*

So, to fix this problem, I'm developing an app which helps couples, groups of friends and people who are just casually dating organise date night more efficiently and have fun.

It works like this:

1. Choose your date night (04/09/2021)
2. Invite your partner to the date night to participate in planning it.
3. Pick what you're doing on the night (restaurant, activity, bar)
4. Now you swipe left or right on your choices of restaurants, activities to do and bars (yes, just like Tinder). Your partner does the same from his/her phone.
5. Once you both swipe right on a common thing from each category, a date is made.
6. You can reserve tables, buy tickets, etc straight from the app.

Obviously there is a lot more going on in the background and the system will help you both be on the same page.

The app will be completely free. No ads, no paywalls.

Would anyone use something like this? Do you guys think its useful? What features should i add in it for it become useful?

Lying Husband

I need some help! My husband has downloaded 3 modified APK's to his phone. They are ims settings , contacts easy widgets, and phone, Crane. I can read the classes file and see they work off each other, a secret code receiver, a fake app, airplane mode has to be on. I just can't figure out how to get in the hidden app. I can get to where the screen starts to slide up, but says processing failed. We have samsung phones, this is how I get to the processing failed screen.....slide down quick tiles, turn airplane mode on, touch the settings cog, and then touch the samsung profile icon. That is when it slides up, then back down saying processing failed. Does anyone have any suggestions??

Weird sound from my iPhone 11

I was wonder if anyone knows whats happening with my iPhone 11 Pro Max, I was laying with my ear directly on my phone and I heard a really quiet high pitched beep/buzz and some mechanical whirring, I’m assuming there’s nothing wrong but I don’t know much about phone hardware compared to other tech. Does anyone know what the noises are? They are inaudible from anywhere but directly ear to phone. Everything seems to be in perfect functioning order.

Time sensitive: iPhone user wanting to switch, just found Galaxy S10/N10+ online on clearance and will buy today. Which do I get?

Hi all, iPhone user but android liker here, I've wanted a Galaxy since forever but due to mUh eCoSysTeM and the prices of samsung devices, I've stayed on iPhone. After the latest unsurprisingly crap iPhone 12 announcement (which STILL has not even got 90Hz jesus apple seriously?) I am genuinely looking to go Samsung. I've just found the S10+ and N10+ online for like £400 new in clearance which is insane and need to know which is the best bang for buck before I go and buy one today in the next two hours or so before they run out of stock.

What I need the most;

• I'm a tech guy, so even though they will never matter day to day, I want the best specs.

• I also want to record a lot of "super" slow motion 960fps video and will go for the phone that has the better camera.

I will play around with the phone once I get it (I'm guessing Android is pretty easy to get the hang of?) so all I really need from you guys is "bruh get the s10/n10 cause it better" as opposed to a review, since it'll take longer to write an in depth response and I need to get it asap.

Anyway, thanks for your time and I'll be updating this post once I get either phone.

I keep seeing people becoming increasingly mad over the no charging brick including with the new iPhone 12. You can still use your old chargers so what’s the issue?

Regardless if Apple has decided to do this because of e-waste or not you can still use any pre existing iPhone charger you have and it will still work. People are talking like they HAVE to use the cable the 12 comes with and that just isn’t true. The only people that will have to buy a USB-C brick is first time Apple users and I don’t see that as a very big issue. I’d also say if you’re not using wireless charging by now as it is you’re behind the curve

Automatic (or small input) email filing system? Quite specific to our business setup

Hello r/tech

I work for a small consultancy in UK. Typically if a new job comes up we'll create a new project folder directory on our server (local in the office).

Email correspondence with the client is usually left on the main consultants pst file until it's printed and archived as a hard copy.

The problems with this are that it requires an awful lot of paper to print everything off. It's also difficult to help a client with their job if the main consultant isn't available as until the hard copy is filed we would have to access the consultant's emails. Not a great system in this sense.

Instead of printing out emails for hard copies that can be filed I've been trying to think of a way that would let us file emails on our server (not totally opposed to a cloud server though).

So far I've thought of creating an email account for each new job so that we can copy in all future emails and then anyone could access the emails from anywhere using webmail. The problems with this solution are that our webmail storage for each email hosted is small (<500mb) and that we currently don't have unlimited email account creation.

Do you think this solution is still worth pursuing or could anyone recommend another?

Projector vs TV.

First time ever visiting this sub so tell me if this is the wrong place to post this and I’ll remove it.

I’ve had a Benq Projector (don’t know the exact make) for roughly about 4 years now (I have it in my bedroom) I use it for mainly playing my PlayStation and watching YouTube, Amazon prime through my fire tv stick. it’s worked perfectly and I’ve had pretty much no problems at all with it and it still runs good. There isn’t any specific reasoning but for the last few months I’ve on and off been really thinking about switching back to a TV.

Do you think it would be pointless me switch back? What do you think I should do? Any advice at all would help

I Can't Update my BIOS

I have the latest BIOS update on a USB (formatted to FAT32). The BIOS file is a .308 file and when I go to ASUS EZ Flash in the BIOS Utility Settings, it doesn't detect the BIOS update file. I suspect that it's because it's a .308 file. Any suggestions?

Cable splitter question

Sorry but I don’t know where else to post this. I live in what used to be a hotel. I have a common area with a bedroom on each side. When I got cable internet the technician said that the cable jack in my room wasn’t getting a good enough signal so he installed the WiFi router in the common area. This was fine because it worked well enough with no real issues.

I got a roommate in the other room 2-3 weeks ago. I told him about my cable situation since he was also going to put his internet in his room. A couple days later I notice his router is also in the common area with a cable splitter being used for the one cable jack.

There was no problem with this until yesterday. I’m trying to play Genshin Impact on my PS4 which doesn’t require a crazy good internet connection but suddenly I’m getting disconnected all the time. Also things have been loading slower on my phone.

My roommate does gaming and streaming so I’m wondering if somehow he would have the ability to adjust the bandwidth so now I’m getting less and him more.
