Is 4K HDR Blu Ray quality really so much better than 4K HDR streaming?

I recently just bought a TCL 55R617 TV. I'm just wondering if the quality of Blu Ray is so much better than streaming that it is worth it to buy a Blu Ray UHD player and discs. I've never actually watched a Blu Ray 4K HDR movie, so I can't really compare personally. I'm not a cinephile, but if the difference is significant, then I might be interested.

Can VR crack motion sickness?

After reading about Alaska Airlines testing virtual reality in different flights from Boston, I have to admit that one of the first thoughts I had was about feeling motion sick… something I get on flights without the help of virtual reality tech. People can experience cybersickness, which involves nausea and discomfort that can last for hours after participating in VR applications, which have become prevalent in gaming, skills training and clinical rehabilitation. But (ironically), using VR technology, researchers may now predict who are more likely to feel motion sickness by observing how the individuals sway in response to a moving visual field. The researchers, from the University of Waterloo, believe that this knowledge will help them to develop counteractions to cybersickness. What are your thoughts on using VR for concepts like this? Do you think they will be successful?

[UPCOMING] Caps with GIFS. Your gifs.

One of my friends showed me this amazing company who will make caps with playable GIFs on them!!! I can't express how excited I am. You can check out the site here. This IS a referral link, sorry if anyone is against referral links, I'm still not quite sure if I can post a link like this here even though it's related. Do petitions cover referrals? Tell me if I have to remove it. But it's a really cool cap and I think tech nerds should check it out.

When I get the hat I plan to play my own GFX and VFX gifs. I'll be a walking portfolio.

Would you still keep your Facebook Acct. after one data breach after another?

https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-45686890

"The company said attackers were able to exploit a vulnerability in a feature known as “View As” to gain control of people's accounts. The flaw has been fixed, wrote the firm’s head of security, Guy Rosen, adding all affected accounts had been reset, as well as another 40 million "as a precautionary step"

I was chatting via fb messenger when I was all of a sudden logged out from my account. I thought for a while that somebody was trying to get into my account or something. Or if my laptop at home was switched on with VPN switched on. But this is what happened

I am addicted to Facebook. The groups and the never ending videos and links. Iteats up a lot of my time. Is messenger has been like the default messaging system for me. It is kinda hard to remove from my life now but it seems they are suffering from one issue to another.

If you have a facebook account, does this bother you? Would you consider keeping your account?

Question for all Tech Heads and Code Crunchers regarding Augmented Reality(AR)

I have a well thought idea/plan on how to create an interactive augmented reality device which could map user input and display this in a 3D perspective on a pair of glasses. It comprises of two components a (Ring) or (Bracelet) that displays in this case an image that pops up out of the ring or bracelet that the user can interact with. the second component would be the glasses which display the interactive UI in (AR) form. The application in this case would be for a (phone) type layout or UI which would not require a phone to operate.

If this peaks anyone's interests, I welcome anyone to pick my brain on the (how) as the details on this are extensive and I dont want to fill a post.

I just want to gauge if there is some massive issue I might have not solved or thought about and also find intelligent people to seek opinion on the execution of this endeavor.

Much appreciated!

Ever Thought Of Bringing Wine To Life? This Company Did

Bringing wine to life – I don’t know about you, but this brings up various strange images into my brain of dancing grapes and skipping bottles all in an eccentric shade of maroon. Well this company decided to bring wine to life, but not quite like my vision… more like augmented reality labels to be exact. The company, known as Rabble, is one of two in the world using the technology, which allows people to view an animated story in real-time right from their wine bottles. Rabble partnered with San-Francisco based company Tactic to create the software and the first AR label is Rabble’s Red Blend, which animates a print of Florence during an apocalyptic event. The animation begins with a peaceful view of the city and turns dark as the comet falls on the city, darkening the skies and bringing loud explosions with it. It sounds like quite a scene, but you know what they say…. A glass of red wine helps your heart and is great to your overall health (in moderation), so AR is just helping it on its way! What do you think about this tech? Is it a little over-the-top or exactly how advertising should be going?

Artificial Intelligence is transforming social media. Can Democracy Survive?

Based on this Washington Post opinion "Machine learning, an AI application where machines learn without explicit programming, will rapidly pore over data troves and illuminate key insights with limited human intervention. Once audiences have been scoped, they’ll need to be prodded, and new innovations will provide scary capabilities for social media audience manipulation."

That being said, wouldn't it be logical if Artificial Intelligence is also used to counter this? But, if that would be the case, who would enforce it? Can social media sites do it by themselves if not demanded by its users? But how would users demand it if they patronize fake news?

Does Artificial Intelligence help in understanding emotions of people in social media? If so, can it be used to influence in favor or against a government or even a brand/business?

According to this article: https://www.smartdatacollective.com/future-social-media-depend-artificial-intelligence/

"AI algorithms can monitor millions of unstructured user comments to understand crisis situations or trends to provide a personalized experience. With effective segmentation, AI can help provide content based on online activity and demographics"

Fake news have been spreading all over social media but in my opinion AI can be used to reinforce them or block them. From what I am noticing though, fake news remain prevalent in Facebook. Is it possible that it can easily be manipulated by those who are paying for ads and social media managers to have an election to be in their favor? As for businesses, I think the same can also be applied.

Laptop Recommendations

I am a huge desktop fan, my PC desktop is my primary PC and always will be, but due to doing a lot more overseas travel than I'm used to I've started looking into laptops. And frankly.... I'm overwhelmed. I have an old heavy Macbook Pro which I don't really like, I don't want another Macbook and want to move into PC laptops but after weeks of researching I think I'm more confused than ever about what to get and which one will actually suit me. Can anyone help me out?

Basically what I'm after is:

  • Budget of $1,000-$1,500 (This is Australian dollars)
  • Lightweight and small this is important with me as I have back and shoulder issues and can't carry some heavy computer in a backpack while travelling.
  • Strong enough to play games, I'm thinking preferably core i7, at least 8GB RAM although 16 would be preferred.
  • Strong enough to handle editing (video work such as Premiere, light photoshop work.
  • Something that .... looks nice. I know this isn't as important as the rest, but if I'm going to buy something I want it to have a nice stylish look.

Does my dream notebook/ultrabook exist? Or am I asking for too much for too low of a price?

A Question Regarding Code with Microprocessing.

Suppose I wrote a code in Java or something where it takes in an input and spits out an output.

Now let’s say I want to implement this code into a physical transmitter and receiver. One button or button(s) transmit my input and the receiver receives that input. After sifting through the code, it sends me back the correct output through a vibration or series of vibrations.

1) How can this be done? 2) In general, can you encode these actions or codes into small chips that vibrate and that have buttons?

Thanks, I’m still new to electronics and coding and microprocessing. I think computer science is really neat :p

Augmented reality start-up looks to recreate the shopping trip

One area with particular AR promise is simply retail. Technology could finally allow a person to effectively try an outfit or see what furniture might look like in a room, before they buy it. It assures the buyer that they are making a good decision and encourages them to buy more at once! In addition to the fact that I wouldn't have to leave the house to get a new outfit that will suit me haha! INDE has been working on its proposition for the retail industry over the past year, developing a new brand called Vyu, which it plans to launch shortly... Do you think you'll use these AR platforms for shopping once they arrive?? :)

6 Ways To Set Expectations For Artificial Intelligence For Everyone In The Business

It is always overwhelming when new technology comes in. However, AI will bring a wave of business opportunities and benefits, that are worth exploring. Certainly, the change will come with challenges, but the technology will quickly show its potential, requiring some patience with becoming fully knowledgeable with it. The challenge is to teach and encourage business leaders and end-users to think big, and to think long-term when it comes to AI. How do you think businesses will adjust to these changes? Any implications?

Newegg's public response to the Magecart hack is unacceptable

Four days ago it was revealed that Newegg was hacked and had credit card information exposed for many people who made purchases during the time window 8/14 - 9/18

https://www.reddit.com/r/tech/comments/9h6vfy/another_victim_of_the_magecart_assault_emerges/

When I learned about this I went to Newegg's customer service webpage and found a message stating:

Yesterday we learned one of our servers had been injected with malware which was identified and removed from our site. We’re conducting extensive research to determine exactly what info was obtained and are sending emails to customers potentially impacted. Please check your email for any correspondence.

As of today there has been no update and this message hasn't even been updated. When I contacted their customer service, the representative I talked to stated that the customer service team has not received an update regarding this situation. I really hope I can get an email stating whether I am not affected or was potentially affected. But there's nothing. Apparently the web security team is not in communication with the customer service team.

By the way, the Newegg online chat system is something fit for /r/softwaregore

The Best Tech Youtubers

Hi everyone,

I've always loved tech but have never really watched any tech youtube channels before. I only just previously started and have taken a liking to it.

So far I've watched videos from

  • Linus Tech Tips
  • Marques Brownlee
  • Dave Lee
  • Unbox Therapy

I'm looking for videos that cover unboxings, reviews, tests etc of computers, parts, phones, headphones, laptops, robotics and so on. I'm not particularly interested in Apple products so I would prefer channels that don't heavily focus on them. Does anyone have any good recommendations?

Trying to build a GPU server with 5 desktop computers with Nvidia 1080Ti [Advice Please]

Hello cloud & ml experts,

I am a student researcher who is trying to take 5 desktop computers with Nvidia 1080's in each one and mesh the gpu's computational power to build a gpu server. This would be for my school program's researchers to remotely train their neural networks faster using our own private gpu server, but even after much research i have no clue on what to do. Actually I don't know how to even create a gpu server with just 1 gpu for my school program's researchers to use remotely while at home.

Can someone please help me out?

Watch Out For The Virtual Sofa In Your House

When you buy furniture, it’s all good that you take measurements and look at colors that you (or your husband/wife) will like, but ultimately you will never know how it will fit until it is in your house. Also, you will never know if something will (or won’t) fit going up your stairs until you try. Some clever people have had the same problems and have therefore created some tech to help with just that. Would you consider using this tech to sort your furniture placement out? Have you tried using something like this before? Did it work?

Leak Tips 'Google Home Hub' Smart Display

Google will reportedly unveil a 7-inch smart display at its Oct. 9 event.

On Tuesday, pictures of the upcoming product, which it claims will be called "Google Home Hub." The device itself looks like a tablet that's been molded to the back of a speaker.

It'll function like a Google Home product, which comes integrated with the company's voice assistant software. But the addition of the 7-inch screen will let you do things like watch the news, view your calendar, and look at photos. According to the leaks, the device can also display a live feed from a Nest video doorbell camera.

However, the smart display doesn't appear to offer a full-blown version of Android. Leaked photos emphasize that Google Home Hub is designed for hands-free voice commands, though the screen does support touch.

The product will be offered in two colors, chalk and charcoal, and weighs in at about a pound. It can connect wirelessly over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

It isn't clear how much the Google Home Hub will cost. But if the leaks are real, the product will go up against Amazon's Echo Show a rival smart display product that launched last year. The Echo Show originally retailed at $229.99, but can now be bought for $129.

The Oct. 9 event, meanwhile, is expected to showcase Google's new Pixel 3 phones.

Technology Is Helping Get You Better Access To Healthcare

A little problem starts to pop up or something doesn’t quite seem right and you just tell yourself it’s fine. And it probably is (even though your wife tells you to go speak to someone)…. But when the time comes, and you are ready, you want to make sure you have access to the correct people to help. And unfortunately, a lot of people just don’t have that. There is a shortage of providers and, coupled with a lack of access, it can mean you just don’t get the care that you need. But tech is trying to help with that and hopefully people will take note. Between virtual reality apps that allow you to take a virtual psychotherapy session on your own time and ‘telemental health’, the reach of help is expanding and hopefully more people will use it. Have you tried tech like this before, or seen it being used? Do you believe it assists the healthcare industry? How else can it be used?

Traveling Back In Time, Virtual Reality Style

I don’t know about you, but traveling back in time is something that I would love to do. Whether it be to visit a particular person, place or event, it would be great to see first hand the things most of us read about in books. And really, when you think about it, that is kind of what virtual reality is doing. It is allowing us to travel back and experience different situations from the safety of our own homes and so many different initiatives are now taking this to the next level. What time-travel would you like to have with VR, where would you like to go? What other benefits does this offer, such as visual education to a younger generation?

iPhone lost its crown to the Apple Watch | Its ability to take an electrocardiogram (ECG) and spot if the wearer has suffered a fall makes it useful

https://www.zdnet.com/article/how-the-iphone-lost-its-crown-to-the-apple-watch/

By now, I think we all have seen spoof videos of the new iphones and for good reason. It seems not to offer anything spectacular or really like really new. The focus seems to be now on the watch because of the ecg feature. The Apple Watch is now considered a "fashionable medical device". I am still a bit skeptical about it but if the possible "potential technologies" of the watch will turn out to be true, then hooray for apple.

Blockchain Techn: Game Changer in Medical Tourism | Brings healthcare solutions to promote better patient experience for medical travelers

https://www.medicaltourismmag.com/blockchain-technology-game-changer-medical-tourism/

"Blockchain technology is permeating healthcare rapidly, bringing healthcare solutions to promote better patient experience for medical travelers. Blockchain technology offers solutions to several barriers in medical tourism and health tourism, such as poor pre-travel logistics, record exchange between healthcare providers, and loss of patient visibility in a tourist destination country.

These problems often lead to a waste of money and potential health risks for the patient, as well as reduced destination attractiveness for the medical tourist destination."

A lack of access to a patient’s health records can slow down the care process, lead to healthcare mishaps, and ruin the reputation and attractiveness of a hospital or health travel destination - This statement reminds me of an episode in House where South Americans (I can't remember from what country exactly) traveled to the US for the sake of having a chanced to get properly diagnosed by House and be cured. It's terrible that it happens but it's fact of life.

Wacom Bamboo Pen ctl-470 Not Working

Okay, so this happened twice. First one I had was working well until i dropped it. I plugged it into my computer and the noise happened saying I plugged in a device. But when I put my pen to the surface of the tablet, it didnt even light up. It didn't register the tablet. So i took it apart to see if there were any loose pieces- none.

Then I uninstalled the driver and device, restarted comuter, reinstalled again- still nothing works. So I bought another tablet and it happened again.

Is there anyway to fix this because I DO NOT want to buy another one.

Anybody?

Microsoft aims to Remix Reality with new VR tech

https://mspoweruser.com/microsoft-aims-to-remix-reality-with-new-vr-technology-video/

There's Augmented Reality, then Virtual Reality, and now Remix Reality. LOL

"Microsoft Research has shown off a new VR/AR technology which would bring some of the advantages of AR to the VR world while taking advantage of the fully immersive capabilities of a full VR rig.

Called Remixed Reality, the technology would use a special room littered with depth-sensing cameras which would then be used to feed a reconstructed point of view image to VR headset users in the room.  That way the users will be able to control exactly what they see in the room, opening up the ability to virtually remix reality."

Don't get me wrong but I am really glad that such innovations are being made. There's so much new things happening like monthly? daily? to keep up with. It's awesome because us consumers can enjoy it i.e. if we can afford it.

"Healthcare startups are expected to further accelerate the development of remote healthcare services which utilize artificial intelligence, amid improvements in the accumulation of health data on individuals."

I hope this is something that all countries can follow. This would be incredibly helpful in countries where there is internet connection but hospitals are not easily accessible or just too expensive for the common people.

AI for Molecular Design | Machine-learning algorithms are speeding up the search for novel drugs and materials

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/ai-for-molecular-design/

"In AI, machine-learning algorithms analyze all known past experiments that have attempted to discover and synthesize the substances of interest—those that worked and, importantly, those that failed. Based on the patterns they discern, the algorithms predict the structures of potentially useful new molecules and possible ways of manufacturing them. No single machine-learning tool can do all this at the push of a button, but AI technologies are moving rapidly into the real-world design of drug molecules and materials."

In creating a drug to fight cancer or a compound that stops a virus, there are two challenges: 1st is finding the right chemical structure for the substance and 2nd, determining which chemical reactions will link up the right atoms into the desired molecules or combinations of molecules. Artificial Intelligence is now making things easier for scientists to do this.

What's the a tech innovation marketing people should really start using but aren't?

I've been asked by a client (marketing company) to help them create a "lunch and learn" about advancements in communications technology. Essentially what tools or applications should they start seriously considering to invest money and resources for hiring and/or training to better serve their marketing clients. It's been a long week and I've hit a wall. Basically if you were starting a cutting edge advertising/marketing company and money and available talent was no issue what would you offer to get and stay ahead of the competition?

Mobile Wifi?

So I had a shower thought the other day.

My thinking was “hey how sweet would it be if I could just take my router from home and put it in my backpack, hook it up to a battery, and then be done with paying for cell service or worrying about how much data i’m using.”

Then I realized, I’m stupid, and most likely there’s already mobile routers that I just don’t know about. And hey presto there are.

(I then started thinking - hey in the future why would we have separate items, why wouldn’t the router and phone be one item - again, hey presto, somebody is working on that, but that’s for another day)

So my question to all of you is...

Is there a product that I don’t know about that can already do this and I’m out of the loop?

(Maybe a lithium ion battery attached to a mobile router thats super user friendly and cheaper than I would have expected?)

Thank you!

[QUESTION] How does Word save your unsaved progression if your PC turns off randomly

Hi, today my professor asked the whole class this question:

“Imagine you are using Microsoft office word and you have a hundred rows done. The last time you saved your work, you were on the 8th row. Suddenly, the laptop stops running and you are furious because hours have gone down the drain. After some time you decide to do it all again and turn on the laptop. You get into Word and suddenly the whole 100 rows you typed appear again on your screen. How does Word do it?”

I know when you save your files, RAM stores the file inside the HDD. But since the 92 rows were unsaved and RAM is only a temporary memory hardware, where does the file go, if not lost? Help me anyone :))

Virtual Reality Is Making Robotics Easier

I will admit I’m not into robotics and to be perfectly honest, I know very little. I just assume it is super complicated and, to be fair, to a layman like me it is. However, those who are involve in the industry are turning to virtual reality to help with the programming of industrial robotics and this could change the way things are done in the robotic world. It makes things a lot more straightforward and can open up the industry to so many more people. What are your thoughts on this? Do you think this is a progressive step or a regressive one?

How to start with self-driving cars using ROS ?

Why ROS is interesting for autonomous cars ?

Robot Operating System (ROS) is a mature and flexible framework for robotics programming. ROS provides the required tools to easily access sensors data, process that data, and generate an appropriate response for the motors and other actuators of the robot. The whole ROS system has been designed to be fully distributed in terms of computation, so different computers can take part in the control processes, and act together as a single entity (the robot).

Due to these characteristics, ROS is a perfect tool for self-driving cars. After all, an autonomous vehicle can be considered as just another type of robot, so the same types of programs can be used to control them. ROS is interesting because:

  1. There is a lot of code for autonomous cars already created. Autonomous cars require the creation of algorithms that are able to build a map, localize the robot using lidars or GPS, plan paths along maps, avoid obstacles, process pointclouds or cameras data to extract information, etc… Many algorithms designed for the navigation of wheeled robots are almost directly applicable to autonomous cars. Since those algorithms are already available in ROS, self-driving cars can just make use of them off-the-shelf.

  2. Visualization tools are already available. ROS has created a suite of graphical tools that allow the easy recording and visualization of data captured by the sensors, and representation of the status of the vehicle in a comprehensive manner. Also, it provides a simple way to create additional visualizations required for particular needs. This is tremendously useful when developing the control software and trying to debug the code.

The Tech Reality of Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality. There is a lot of talk, speculation and criticism of the technology and its counterparts, augmented reality, mixed reality and extended reality (which can be used interchangeably in some circumstances). I myself am a bit of a critic at times, then I sway towards appreciation and then back again. So, what is it really all about? Everyone has differing opinions and one can be found here (there are plenty more out there too, please read them all!), but I guess what can be taken from it is that this technology is designed to hopefully assist people and provide opportunities. What do you think? Do you believe this tech is a beneficial one or a bust?

You could even say he had a trillion dollars or whatever, but do to limited manpower in the feild, I think a trillion dollars would go just as far as 100 billion, except some higher wages.

The World's Most Innovative Companies Are the Driving Force for Digital Transformation

https://www.forbes.com/sites/workday/2018/08/06/why-the-worlds-most-innovative-companies-are-the-driving-force-for-digital-transformation/#5c3516b62806

"Digital transformation may be the phrase du jour in the global technology space, but it is much more than marketing wash. Of course, executives are told they must embrace emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning and blockchain, or they run the risk of being left behind. Innovative tech is key to recruiting the best talent. If the technology these workers use at work does not match the high quality, consumer-grade tools they already use, that can lead to reduced engagement or in some cases may prevent a candidate from joining an organisation—it is that crucial."

I have already read so many opinions that tech like blockchain, AI, and machine learning are just buzzwords and nothing much. However, I think that although there are companies who use them as a form of marketing, blockchain, for example is a tech that could really be beneficial in different industries as could be seen its applications in healthcare and shipping.

Huawei The world’s second-largest smartphone maker 2018

Huawei overtook Apple to become the world’s second-largest smartphone seller behind Samsung in the second quarter, the first time in seven years that any contender has managed to split the top two.

Multiple market analysts said that Huawei’s rise came as the slowdown in China, the world’s largest market for smartphones, eased, with growing market share in Europe. Huawei failed in its recent bid to launch in the US after government action against companies deemed a security threat.

Upgrade copyrighting.

Copyrighting a work today is a long drawn and expensive process of registration or publication. Copyright is a bundle of rights given by the law to the creators of literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works and the producers of cinematograph films and sound recordings.

The laws are clear yet there are countless fights over it. Fights regarding theft of work, people claiming that their original work was stolen and registered by others. Or fights over nonpayment of fees to the author when his work is used by others.

An easy solution to this I think is the use of block chain technology to generate safe storage databases as suggested by David Evans Bailey in his book “Virternity: The quest for a virtual eternity.” By use of block chain, right of authorship will be proven from the very moment work is uploaded to the virternity block chain storage. This way not only costs but processing time will also be drastically reduced.

Workouts On Your Wall

I love working out and (trying) to stay fit, but sometimes I really struggle to get my butt out the door. Sure, I feel great once I’ve done it, but it’s easy to forget that feeling when other parts of life catch up with you (young kids anyone?). But apparently there is some new technology which is mounted on your wall and provides an almost surreal workout experience. You could have it anywhere in your house (or office) and then the excuses become even less. What do you think about this? I know that working out at home isn’t new, but this sounds like it would make things that little bit easier and I’ll take all the help I can get. Would you consider making your workout a virtual one?

Technology Isn’t Just For The Young

As a lover of books and a library employee, I have to say I see my fair share of people say that technology, especially aspects like virtual reality, are ‘only for young people’. But what if that wasn’t the case? What if technology was being used to help the older generation in positive ways and keep them connected? That is something that I could get behind and show that technology and books don’t have to be a ‘one or the other’ choice – people can have the best of both worlds. What are your thoughts on technology, such as virtual reality, helping the elderly? Is this an initiative you believe will be successful?

Am I hurting my phone?

I work out side in 90-100 degree weather, and when my phone starts to get over heated I take my compressed air canister(it has liquid nitrogen in it or something) turn it upside down so that I can drip the liquid on the back of my phone. It cools it off quickly and I can get back to using it. I was wondering if there were any negative consequences to doing that.

Best Surround Sound Gaming Headset?

Hey all! Looking into getting some gaming headphones for myself. What is the best quality headphones/headset that you know of? I mostly play FPS such as Counterstrike: Global Offensive etc. I don’t care about price. I’ll pay whatever! They don’t need to necessarily have a mic attached to them, either. The only thing I really care about is that they have fantastic surround sound. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Fitness Without Leaving Your Living Room

I don’t know about you, but when I need to exercise the hardest part is getting out the door. Whether it be because you are procrastinating (I definitely need to do every chore I have been putting off all week right now) or because you have outside influences keeping you preoccupied (ie. Working after hours or your kids deciding they need you right that second), that first step out the door can be a tricky one. So what if I told you, you didn’t have to leave the house to exercise? Now granted this isn’t a new concept, with home gyms in peoples garages and treadmills in front of the TV being some peoples exercise off choice, but new age, wall mounted fitness equipment allows you to venture into a virtual fitness world from your living room, office or bedroom. What are your thoughts on this? Is it something you would consider investing in?
