Do we even need wireless charging?

I have been thinking about this for so long. I feel like I need to rant a bit about it here.

Wireless charging is not revolutionary! You still need to put your phone down, you still need to plug the charger. The only convenience (and downside) is not having your device physically hooked to the charger. It can be a downside because wired chargers have saved our devices from accidental falls here and there (maybe tons of times for some).

Our current cable options (usb C and lighting), offer double sided connectivity, which is as convenient as it gets. You don't need to find the right way; you just plug it. Moreover, think of the fact that while plugged, one can actually use a device (despite it not being such a good thing, it is convenient when out of time, bored or in an emergency), whilst one is required to put a phone down for charging, which makes it harder to operate.

I am not against things getting better bit by bit. What I can't stand is the hype around our current version of wireless charging. I own a OnePlus 6t smartphone, and the super fast charging it provides (which, last time I checked, isn't available with wireless charging) is a delight. The cable is also a beautiful red and is thick, so it has an aesthetic to it. I have never really wished to replace this for wireless capability; at least not the current one!

What got me onto ranting was seeing a headline that OnePlus might finally bring wireless charging to its new device to be released this year. Why is it so celebrated?

Now, you wanna hear the kind of wireless charging I would be super hyped about? Contactless wireless charging! If you do not need to put your phone down, if somehow we could keep our phone within a proximity to a source, like WiFi, then we'd be talking! Is it possible? All that we have today seemed impossible 50 years ago. We could only find out its impossibility if we actually try.

Nintendo says it has no plans for a new Switch this year

Nintendo CEO and president Shuntaro Furukawa told investors today that the company has “no plans” to launch a new model of the Switch in 2020. Speaking as part of a corporate management policy briefing following yesterday’s release of financial results, Furukawa instead pointed to today’s announcement of the new Animal Crossing-branded model.

“According to the conventional wisdom for dedicated video game platforms, Nintendo Switch should be entering the midway phase of the hardware lifecycle,” Furukawa said. “But we believe we have built a foundation on which we can pursue further growth opportunities for Nintendo Switch.”

It wouldn’t really be surprised if there were no new Switch hardware this year. The original system came out in early 2017 and received its first significant updates last year with the Switch Lite and a refreshed model with better battery life, both of which were made possible by a more power-efficient version of the Nvidia chip inside. Anything more substantial would likely require new custom silicon from Nvidia, which no longer designs general-purpose chips aimed at tablets or other mobile devices.

Here is a technology idea

Idea to diagnose

An idea is to build an IoT device that contains a

1. Non-contact thermometer
2. 3g/4g gsm module

the purpose of this device is to identify if the person passing by is suffering from fever etc. the data will go to a centralized database to allow monitoring of how many people could be suffering from high fever. It is not a 100% diagnose but it could help narrow down the people who may need immediate help.

Such a device could be used at borders with low resources etc.

MacBook Pro vs MacBook Air?

Need to upgrade my MacBook, and deciding between the new 2019 MacBook Air, vs the latest MacBook Pro.

City still using windows xp

So the other day I walk into my Municipal company in KY to pay my bill and guess what I see a computer in the front office still running windows xp, come on its 2020, support for xp ended in 2014, these computer has people's personal information on them and our city government can't even keep basic computers up to date, as a computer tech this gets under my skin, do you guys think I should contact the mayor office or leave this situation alone

Programmable Keyboards

I just got one of those fancy programmable keyboards that has keys that can be customized to do other functions. Problem is my computer at work doesn't allow me to download the driver to program those keys. If I were to program the keys at home on another computer, would those changes be saved to the keyboard and still be there when I take it in to work?

Why aren't cruzer fit USB sticks the norm?

Fox sports app - will it air mainstream commercials during the big game?

This year, the fox sports app promises higher definition (not quite 4K) viewing of the game. I am planning on having people over, and was hoping to watch the game on the app because it looks so much better. Internet speeds

I just got approved for an apartment with my roommate and am now setting up my internet. We use a lot of social media, watch a lot of YouTube, and I play the occasion not at all internet intensive video game (Sims 4 (legacy now😬) minecraft, fallout 4, and toontown rewritten are my main ones.) Homebrewing an ipod

I'm looking for a cheap alternative to having an iPod as I want to remove myself from the apple family. I've been looking at alternate mp3 players but I haven't found one I like yet. I was recommended to buy a cheap phone from like Walmart and "Homebrew" it to just be a music player.

Any suggestions?

Requirements are:

-Large capacity (external memory is a possibility) -Cheap (like prefer under $100 for the actual device, especially if I have to buy an SD card) -Prefer C-type charger cable (I already use them for my phone so the extra expense is not a deal breaker but makes it less desirable)

I'm pretty simple with my specs.

My laptop starts it's fans every 30 minutes or so (while power off). Why?

I noticed today that my laptop, when shut down, speeds up its fans every 30 minutes or so. The fans go for 5 seconds then turn off again. It hasn't happened to me before. It can't be windows updates every 30 minutes, the laptop is POWERED OFF. (it is plugged to the wall). I'm afraid it's some sort of a CPU farm which uses my CPU and the fans start automatically after a certain temperature has been reached.

Pc problem

So I have pretty decent pc.
Intel LGA1151 Core i7-7700K OEM
Kingston Value DDR4 2400Mhz 8GB
Kingston Value DDR4 2400Mhz 8GB
Samsung PM961 SSD 256GB PCIe KPC
Seagate Barracuda 1TB SATA3.0
EVGA GeForce GTX1070 8GB SC Black Edit.

And i downloaded something and my google chrome start page was some ad search engine and I couldnt change it( or maybe was to lazy and decided that i need refresh my windows)
So I went into windows recovery and started all that. First chosen reset with keep my files. And noticed pc is slow after completion. So i decided to do install without keeping my files. Pc still crap

How i notice that pc slow. Games doesnt get as much fps as it was before. And starts lagging.
I.E. Pubg gets 60-80 fps sometimes its +100, before reset it was like +100 always
League barely gets 144 fps. I know its on ultra settings but before reset it was like +200.
And before reset I had option in nividia control panel that i can choose global settings my GPU now i cant choose.

Okay, so I'm having a problem here, if anyone can help me.

Basically, my chrome is blacked out, almost like my screen got ruptured. So, I tried to uninstall, and I removed all the background running chromes, and after that, I got to my uninstaller. However, my uninstaller is now blacked out. This is really stressing me out as this is my work computer, and need to get this problem fixed. I've ran multiple tests to see if it was a virus problem, but it wasn't that either. I didn't want to spend money on this problem, and I thought that you guys were the people who would help me. Would really appreciate if you guys somehow helped me with this.

also, I have already tried restarting my computer multiple times, and my troubleshooter says there are no problems.

What to do with 2nd laptop I impuslively bought

I had a 1 year old MacBook Pro that I paid $1200 for, and a few months ago, bought an Acer Aspire A1 with a Celeron for $250. I never intended bought the MacBook Pro, but was encouraged to do it through family and friends who like theirs. I wanted to get rid of my MacBook Pro, but I realized most stores are only offering $400-$500 for it and no one will pay $900 (which is how much I wanted to sell it for) for a used laptop when they can get a new Asus or Dell i7 for less than that. I also elapsed the return period. Now, the laptop is only worth about $90 if I trade it in or sell it. I was going to use one laptop exclusively at my work/school and another exclusively for casual bing watching Netflix at home. I may also try to run PC games on my Windows Acer, though Idk if it will run GTA San Andreas even (it ran fine on a previous i5 that died.

It is time that Antivirus companies acted more responsible with their false detections/false positives.

Many software developers experience false positive detections with their software product that they have spent a great deal of time creating. Most new software created shares a very small function that has a digital signature similar to some malware in the wild. Virus Scanners will assume that it an updated version of that malware and flag your entire project as a virus. Then thru VirusTotal.com, this detection gets automatically forwarded to over 70 security companies. Depending on how much coffee the developers of those security companies had that day, they might add this false detection to their antivirus definitions. This is a very common thing to happen.

False positives are profitable to antivirus companies because it looks like the scanner is saving the day and it might convince someone to purchase a subscription to their service. It is a terrible thing for developers to deal with a loss to their online reputation because of a false positive. Your customers see a false detection and their antivirus software deletes it faster than it can be installed.

All antivirus companies have a "report file as false positive" web form on their website. They will fix the false positive with your software once you submit it within 72 hours most of the time. McAfee is the only security software that I am aware of that does not have this form. Instead, you must password protect a .ZIP file with your false positive and send it in an email. Most free email services like Gmail do not allow sending .EXE even in password protected .ZIP files.

There needs to be a standard way to make Antivirus Companies more responsible for their damage to software developers. We can start with requiring them to add a "Report detection as a false positive" button on any screen that is accusing a software program of being malware. Antivirus companies are smart people and they can figure out a way to prevent this button from being abused for spam. Why should a single software developer work all day like anyone else then have to report their software as "CLEAN false positive" to over 70 antivirus companies every few weeks?

VirusTotal is the engine that is starting up many new Antivirus Companies every month. Watch the numbers grow. What other industry has soo many competitors? No one is going to trust these new antivirus companies for the protection of their PC individually. By forwarding any detection to every AV company on the list, new AV barely need to do any research to have a product. I have contacted VirusTotal.com multiple times in past years to make a centralized WHITELIST feature or an option to send files as a false positive to save software developers the time. They are not interested and will ignore your email after the first generic reply.

Diversity for the sake of diversity

So I’ve asked similar things in a lot of different places in different ways to get opinions on the matter. Basically, I’ve come to the conclusion that every company is different and location might have something to do with it. I’m here to make the argument that women have a clear and unfair advantage when it comes to landing jobs in programming.

When I started my career as a programmer, I was a young, inexperienced programmer just getting out of school. I came into the industry naive and ready to land a sweet job as a junior dev. Little did I know, this was actually a lot more difficult than it sounded in my head. However, I noticed a few things with fellow grads that were in my same shoes. Almost everyone had the same amount of experience, good personality, and same quality of work. Almost everyone had the same results. It was a long and hard road trying to be noticed by anyone. I was one of the lucky ones who managed something after a month of graduation. What did I find? An unpaid internship with hopes of employment after. It was the best I could do so I went with it. It turns out it helped me get my foot in the door and get me where I am now.

The strange thing I noticed, however, is that everyone else had the same thing. Internships that had no real promise after and most of them paid nothing. There were a few women that were graduating as well. They had the same if not less experience, background. They had the same education. Every woman that was graduating with us, within 2 weeks, had several interviews and offers and started working as a junior dev.

So if I look today, the numbers are still pretty much the same. The guys, even ones that graduated with me, which was a while ago, are still having trouble finding work. Still having trouble getting any companies to respond or set up an interview. I am currently a mid-level developer and I decided to test the waters to see what it’s like now. After experience, and becoming a mid-level developer, I still have no responses, companies don’t consider me even for a junior dev position. This is not just me, but pretty much everyone else who graduated with me and has some experience now. Even with experience, we still have trouble finding work.

Now compare these two. Women who graduate and have no other experience and have the same education get interviews, offers, and start working within two weeks. Men who have years of experience and are mid-level developers only get “we have decided to consider other candidates”.

Before when I asked this question, it was comparing everyone to graduation-level education and no experience. Even then I noticed that women had an easy time landing good jobs as junior devs. Now after a while, comparing where I am now and my experience, I still see this. I see that an inexperienced woman is more likely to get a job as a junior dev than I, a mid-level man with years of experience.

This is my story to be taken as evidence. I know not every company does this, but I know for a fact it happens. Diversity for the sake of diversity. Why is this in our system and how does it benefit us? I’m opening this up for discussion for anyone to comment

How can I connect our TV's to the internet for just web browsing purposes (without buying an entire computer)

Basically what the title says. Our day to day operations require that our staff have access to the internet. There is a web based software that they access via chrome to get info on the days events. We have monitors installed in our office spaces and the staff need to be able to pull up various web pages on these monitors. Any suggestions on the best way to do this?

The past five years we have used an asus chromebit but we're wondering if something hit the market in the last five years that's similar. We haven't had any issues with the chromebit, we just thought maybe there was something cheaper or more efficient for our needs.

WINDOWS SHORTCUT PROBLEM! HELP!!

Hello!! I need tech person to help me!!! Okay, so I had to format my SD card (removable drive) and I copied all of my files, then I formatted. I tried pasting all of my files, but it wouldn’t let me!!! Some error popped up saying it’s unable to, blah blah. So I did: “Paste Shortcut” and it turned all of my files into shortcuts! I tried pasting all of my other files onto other folders, and it’s no use! It would let me! Now, all of the files I’ve copied are gone, and I’m left with some dumb shortcut folder what was the remain of my folders!!!!

I DID NOT HAVE A VIRUS/MALWARE TURN MY FILES INTO A SHORTCUT. I DID IT MYSELF HOW DO I TURN IT BACK?

I’ve tried using the command prompt and attrib -h -r-s /s /d ., but it didn’t work!!!!! This is urgent! I’m completely useless without my files! I use these files every single day!!

Main question: How do I convert my shortcut files back? The main ones are all deleted. I’m at a lost hope. Help!!!!!!

iPhone boot loop

So my sisters iphone 8 is stuck on a boot loop and I've tried to update it twice through iTunes. Is pirating worth it?

So today I thought my download was done because it said 100%, so I turn off my vpn and forget to delete the file from seeding. Anyways can your isp see stuff that is seeding and not downloading? I'm really thinking about quitting pirating because there's this saying out there you always get caught. And I'm afraid I'll get caught by turning off my vpn when the file is at 100% but still seeding. Or my vpn will get hacked in the middle of doing it. One time I had about 50 music files at 99%, they were still seeding but I thought they were done as every song worked. Anyways my dad gets 50 copyright notices from comcast. I didn't have my vpn on because I was torrenting a legal not copyrighted file from official raspberry pi website. I still wanna do it but I mean someone ik had to go to court and if he didn't, had to pay 5 THOUSAND DOLLARS. I think the movie might have been in theatres still but still it can't happen to a movie that is only on dvd? I support pirating and there's countries where you can do it and isp/government doesn't care but in the us they do. In my words it is worth a possible 5 thousand dollar fine. And I mean can't a government hack into a vpn to idk lets say try to catch a serious hacker, but when they hack into the vpn see someone else in the us pirating and let's say you do it a lot show up to your house?

I'm really not sure if I should pirate because somehow someway I think the government/isp will see what your doing or you'll make a stupid mistake like not turn on your vpn, or turn it off when a file is seeding. Someone ik who is a techy has been doing it for 3 years with a vpn that lives in my state AND has the same isp and never had any copyright notices. But won't he get caught eventually? I really need advice.

Edit: At least if I stop pirating my vpn is still worth it because I use it to bypass my dad possibly knowing I was up late. And I hope he doesn't see it, some parental controls give the parent notice that vpn is on and if I'm not mistaken doesn't a vpn only stop people from seeing what people do? Can't it tell the administrator or in this case a parent see that the mac address (my devices) is on the network, and see that my device is online just not what I'm viewing?

3400x1440 gaming 3900x w/cl16 or 3700x w/ cl14 @3600mhz

Hello all,

Trying to decide between a few different build options for ultrawide 3440x1440 gaming.

I understand that at that resolution, the GPU will be the bottleneck right now, but is there really no advantage for gaming in the foreseeable future?

I plan to max out the budget and right now, it's either:

3900x, 570 Strix gaming-e and 16gb 3600mhz cl16

Or

3700x, (Tomahawk Max?) AMD 16gb 3600mhz cl14.

GPU is a 2080ti.

A third option to consider is a higher clocked 2080ti, but I'm not sure if that would make much of a difference either.

I'm curious about your thoughts and appreciate any input.

Interview strategy for experienced tech candidates

Hi Redditors,

I had a question regarding interviewing and evaluating offers while working a full time job. When I was interviewing close to graduation, I could afford to take multiple interviews in a week. The result of that was that when the offers came through, I had multiple offers at the same time, and thus could negotiate and evaluate my offers. Once I started working, this equation changed. I can no longer afford to take multiple interviews in a week, and the result is once I get an offer and they give me a limited time to accept/reject, I don't have other offers to negotiate with or evaluate. How does one go about interviewing in this scenario so that one has multiple offers in hand?

How do I put things on my other hard drive (windows 10)

I have 2 hard drives, one of them has 28.5 MB free out of 118 GB, while the other has 1.81 TB free out of 1.81 TB. I need to know how to put stuff into my other hard drive since 1.81 TB is a lot and my other 118 GB hard drive is pretty much full. I've tried dragging and dropping things into the hard drive and they appear there but they don't actually do anything they just sit in that hard drive and take up like 1 KB of space.

Microsoft publicly admits defeat to Google

Microsoft's couldn't compete with Google.

The new Microsoft Edge browser, based on the same Chromium web engine of Chrome, Opera and Brave, is now available for download. Edge will be automatically pushed by a future Windows update too.

This standardization is good news for software developers, but unfortunately, too many people will continue using the old Edge browser (with the "E" icon) or even worst, the older Internet Explorer, both based on a "complicated to support" Microsoft engine. Skipping the Explorer support can save 50% or more of development costs and troubles.

Firefox uses Gecko, a different web engine. It's developer Mozilla this week laid off nearly 100 staff since neither donations or premium offers are doing well.

The 90% of Firefox revenue comes from Google, in exchange for being kept as the default Firefox search engine. No diversification of funding and no other ideas are raising money so far. Google is the developer of Chromium, used by the Firefox competitors.

In other words, Google keeps up Firefox financially for now; Microsoft could replace Google's funding by paying Firefox to set Bing as the default search engine but would be a similar scenario of having your salary paid by your main competitor. Any other way for Firefox to get funded, by someone else?

Cloud storage protection

Do any of you use any kind of cloud storage regularly? Something easy to use like Dropbox. Because I want to move most of my files and data into the cloud so that it stays around in case something goes wrong with my own hardware.

I had some concerns though - I remembered some old news about hacks into cloud storage and leaking private photos and other sensitive data. How do I avoid that? I've thought about file encryption services like Tresorit or NordLocker but I'm not sure if that's enough or the only precaution available. What are your thoughts on this?

Wireless headphones recommendation?

I have a deep fear of losing AirPods. I've tried buying an off-brand pair that was cheaper and they -- as you might expect -- would not simultaneously sync.
So I want my next try to count and am willing to spend a little bit more money.

Transponder key no longer working

I have an '06 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The battery went out in my key fob so I opened it to change it. When I did, the metal clip holding the battery in came unsoldered. I changed the battery and put it back together, holding the battery in by the fob housing and went out to start my car. It acted like it was a key without the transponder chip in it by starting and then dying. I adjusted the battery inside the fob, checking that the unlock button worked and tried again. After three tries, turning the key now does nothing. Does the car lock you out of it thinks the transponder isn't there? And I was under the assumption that the transponder doesn't need power itself, it only needs to be in the vicinity of the ignition to work. Anyone have an idea?

Is there a way to block keyfob signals somehow so a car will remain locked?

I'm doing a project and that involves a breathalyzer wirelessly sending information to a key fob, and if BAC is at or above legal limit the car won't unlock. Is there any way to block the frequencies when BACs are sent, and when BAC is under the legal limit the car would be able to unlock? and in a way this could be a product (not specific to one type of car)-can be used universally for all key fobs) Sorry I had no idea where else to post this.

Best Custom Alarm Clock?

I'm looking for the following features in my bedside alarm clock for a decade now and have never had any luck. Willing to pay any price

First I don't want to just use my phone because sometimes I forget to bring it to bed so I want a dedicated bedside alarm clock that won't be moved.

Mandatory features are that it needs to be chargeable or battery backup so if power goes out it will still go off and I need to be able to turn off all LED lights on it.

Optional features I would like:

Syncs to my wifi home desktop for music, can be loaded with music, or syncs to my phone

Ability to set an alarm for Monday through Thursday only

Low LED light only when alarm goes off

Thunderstorm or falling rain track

Wifi question

I got a question I'm using Xfinity WiFi i know it's the worst thing you can use but it's what i got at the moment. My wifi keeps disconnecting i think because my neighbors have way to much stuff connected to their internet it just kicked me right off is their any way i bypass that keep my wifi connected without being kicked off?

Weird issue with the keyboard

Hi all, as the title says I've been having some trouble with the keyboard on my laptop.

The keys, w,r,u and i don't work the moment I start up the laptop but if I press some of the keys mentioned with some other , working key, they would work but alone they don't work. I tried reinstalling the keyboard drivers but with no luck. I even reinstalled Windows and bought a canned air to blow off the dust but alas.

Does anyone knows how to fix this?

How to use virtual desk top on two screens?

I am currently interning for a company, and we use a virtual desktop software so that employees have the ability to work from anywhere as long as they have WiFi.

I have the software on my laptop, and it works fine. When I am using the laptop normally, I can use the laptop and the monitor I have connected to it just fine. However, when I run the virtual desktop, I can only see it on my laptop, and the monitor I have displays the laptop screen without the virtual desktop. I am using a HDMI to VGI connection cable from my laptop to my monitor.

Any ideas on how I could fix this? I really need both screens to be able to work efficiently.

Looking for a tablet for college that won't brake the bank

I've been looking for a tablet for collage, not so much for taking notes with a keyboard but to use it to read PDFs and make notations on in. Plus the occasional movie watching. So I don't need anything to powerful, I've done a little research and landed on the Microsoft Surface Go or the iPad Mini 5 (2019).

They are pretty similar, compact size, same store, same stylus support, the only thing that I'm not sure about is the fact that I'm not in the apple eco system, haven't own anything apple related since the iPhone 4s and I'm pretty afraid of Apple's "restrictions" like maybe I won't be able to open a certain PDF file or play and MKV movie. But I've been told that they have the hole tablet thing pretty much figured out unlike Android tablets.

Open to any other model suggestions but I haven't found anything on that price range with similar specs.

Edit: The fact that the surface pencil seems to be around $20 rather than the $100 of the apple pencil is a big plus

Scammers

So my mother just got off the phone with what I believe to be a scammer. I stopped her from giving her social security, but he already has her name, age, and our address. Is there anything I should do? I told her to check our local branch of social security and possibly file a police report. I know that they can’t get into her bank account but I’m worried about what they might do with our address. Any help is appreciated.

Is buying a Apple Watch worth it, what does it really bring?

I haven’t worn watches till a year ago and I rarely wear them. I kinda do like the look of the Apple Watch but I really don’t have any needs for the main purpose of the “watch replaces the phone” and know it’s my own personal opinion but I was wondering if anyone can persuade me into considering to get one.

What's the deal with "DarkPods" and other websites?

Can anyone help? There seem to be 4 or more "sketchy" websites selling black AirPod replicas, with different names. From a quick search, I can find "blvcknoir" "darkpods" "blackpods" "blkpods"

I think it's safe to assume these are all the same company/manufacturer trying to increase their marketing exposure, but what is going on here?

On the websites, the reviews are very much faked - take for example the "darkpods" website, which has maybe 7 names repeated over and over again to give the impression that there are 136 5-star reviews of their new "darkpods pro".

My question is, has anyone bought these fake airpods - they are all visually identical to one another, and virtually indistinguishable from real airpods apart from the colour - and are they any good?

My feeling is that though their marketing practices are -somewhat- very questionable, they have successfully made identical replicas of Apple airpods, but this is only from their appearance.

Are they worth the money? Are they in fact functionally identical to airpods?

Thanks for any advice/opinions, this is quite interesting I think.
